FRANK ZAPPA – Halloween 81 Live At The Palladium New York City

Il 31 ottobre 2020 è stata una data particolare, sono il giorno, il mese e l’anno del ritorno del Conte Frankula. Per gi amanti del geniale chitarrista statunitense, Frank Zappa, è uscito un box molto interessante e pieno di delizie zappiane, precisamente agli inizi di ottobre. Il box racchiude ben sette ore di show dei tre concerti tenuto dalla sera del 31 ottobre del 1981 e il primo novembre, 6 CD, un libro, il mantello e la maschera del Conte Frankula. Il primo CD racchiude brani come “Chunga’s Revenge”, lo splendido strumentale con la chitarra di Frank Zappa in primo piano, la divertente “You Are What You Is”, interrotta e ripresa con il rimprovero di Zappa al pubblico perché troppo poco rumoroso e ricorda di essere ad un concerto per la festa di Halloween e il pubblico risponde urlando di più la propria presenza, il reggae di “Mudd Club”, l’hard rock ironico di “Dumb All Over”, una specie di crossover dove il chitarrista si diverte a rappare e ancora il rock blues di “Suicide Chump” e la lunga “Drowning Witch”, quasi nove minuti dove emerge il lato più jazzistico di Zappa, ma anche quello più chitarristico con lunghe jam strumentali.

Il secondo CD ha “Flakes”, tra rock, prog e reggae, il folle hard rock che incontra il jazz cabarettistico di “Brokenhearts Are For Assholes” e poi i quasi 10 minuti di “City Of Tiny Lites”, dove la chitarra di Zappa prende il sopravvento con i suoi lunghi solos e ancora “Strictly Genteel”, spettacolare brano estratto da “200 Motels”, dove emerge tutta la genialità e la fantasia di Zappa. Siamo al terzo CD conla sempre folle e geniale “Easy Meat”, l’hard rock blues di “Bambooozled By Love”, le atmosfere progressive e epiche di “Sinister Footwear II” con un ispiratissimo Zappa e i suoi solos e Stevie’s Spanking”, dove viene dato spazio ad un giovanissimo Steve Vai, che insieme a Zappa danno vita ad una vera e propria festa chitarristica. Anche i restanti CD hanni momenti interessanti come ll blues di “Nig Biz”, la leggendaria “Joe’s Garage”, ironica e divertente e l’incredibile “King Kong”, con un trascinante drum solo di Chad Wackerman ancora laa sempre splendida “Zoot Allures” e la lunga e tracinante “Pound For A Brown”. C’è anche una versione in un unico CD con il meglio di quei concerti, “Halloween 81-Highlights From The Palladium, New York City” che ha anche la versione di “Stricly Genteel” della serata del primo novembre estromessa dal box.
