VEXED – Intervista alla cantante Megan Targett

Con “Negative Energy”, qui recensito (leggi qui la recensione), gi inglesi Vexed, guidati dalla cantante Megan Target, esprimono tutta la loro rabbia per ciò che succede nei giorni nostri, per un mondo che sembra impazzito e lo esprimono con un sound trascinante aggressivo e trasgressivo, così come lo è la voce di Megan Target. Ne ho parlato proprio con lei in quest’intervista.

Ciao e benvenuta su Tuttorock. Parlami della band, come sono nati i Vexed?
Siamo una band metal dall’Inghilterra nel Regno Unito. Siamo nati dall’essere in vecchie band insieme che odiavamo! Abbiamo avuto così tanti cambi di formazione nel corso degli anni che la musica si era persa e abbiamo finito per disprezzare le canzoni. Volevamo iniziare un progetto da zero che fosse completamente nostro e non fosse stato offuscato da nessun altro. Avevo un’idea per una nuova band e volevo chiamarla VEXED, il mio fidanzato Willem (batterista) era d’accordo e da lì è partita. Jay (chitarrista) ci ha messo un po’ a convincersi, haha!, ma ora è contento di averlo fatto… credo. Abbiamo incontrato Al attraverso il circuito dei concerti e si è unito più tardi quando eravamo a 2 settimane di distanza da un tour europeo e avevamo bisogno di un bassista. Un po’ un battesimo del fuoco, ma è ancora uno dei miei tour preferiti che abbiamo mai fatto fino ad oggi.

Il nuovo album “Negative Energy” è molto estremo e violento. È questa l’essenza dei Vexed?
In realtà non considero la nostra musica violenta. Molte persone dicono che colgono un sentimento violento ma non è nostra intenzione. Penso che gli argomenti di cui stiamo discutendo siano molto pesanti e spesso scomodi da ascoltare, quindi forse è da lì che le persone percepiscono la sensazione di violenza? Direi che l’essenza centrale di VEXED è pura onestà, verità dolorosa ed emozione pura.

Siete considerati una band alternative metal, ma come definisci lo stile musicale della band?
La gente ci chiama un sacco di cose ahah. Non siamo davvero preoccupati per la categoria in cui gli altri ci inseriscono perché ci sono così tanti generi e sottogeneri diversi che potresti discuterne all’infinito. Diciamo solo che siamo una band metal e prendiamo influenze per tutti i diversi stili di musica.

 La musica dura, estrema, energica deve essere accompagnata da testi espliciti. Di cosa parlano i testi?
In Negative Energy, i testi sono incentrati sul processo del dolore e sulle conseguenze della perdita di una persona cara. Ci sono così tante cose ovvie di cui avrei potuto scrivere, ma volevo sfogarmi sulle cose che spesso vengono tenute nascoste dopo la morte di un membro della famiglia. La bruttezza degli altri che viene alla luce così come altri argomenti che mi hanno molto colpito negli ultimi anni.

La band si è formata in piena pandemia, vi ha forse dato la voglia di sfogare la vostra rabbia nelle canzoni?
La band si è effettivamente formata il primo dell’anno 2019. Quindi abbiamo avuto un periodo pre-pandemia in cui potevamo andare in tour e goderci la musica dal vivo. Si è formato per pura disperazione e frustrazione nel tentativo di far decollare le nostre vecchie band. La pandemia per noi in realtà ha reso qualcosa che amavamo così tanto, davvero difficile da godere. Dovevamo andare in tour con i Whitechapel, pubblicare il nostro album e fare un tour da headliner e molto altro, invece ci siamo seduti tutti a casa! Ovviamente questo non è male rispetto a quello che hanno passato gli altri, ma all’epoca è stata la pandemia che ci ha impedito di essere una band e abbiamo davvero lottato per affrontarla.

Anche la tua voce è molto estrema, molti growls, usi una tecnica particolare o urli nel microfono?
Uso la tecnica del falso accordo, tuttavia fino a poco tempo fa non sapevo che fosse quello che stavo effettivamente facendo. Sono sempre stato un autodidatta e ho passato anni a cercare di migliorare la mia voce, ma non sono mai andata da un professionista o ho cercato video per cercare di migliorare. Ho sempre voluto che fosse solo una cosa mia. Tuttavia sono stata recensita da un coach vocale online e mi è capitato di vedere il video, in cui descrivevano il mio stile e io ero tipo ‘oh wow, è così che si chiama?’ Ahah. Quindi ho approfondito la questione e sì, a quanto pare sono una ragazza di false corde.

Quali sono le tue influenze musicali?
Ce ne sono troppi da elencare! Ma al giorno d’oggi ascolto soprattutto pop, rap, grime, garage ed EDM. Ovviamente amo il metal e sarà sempre il mio genere preferito, ma non mi piace ascoltarlo tutto il tempo perché non voglio annoiarmi. Quando stavamo scrivendo Negative Energy ho preso ispirazione da The Prodigy, Sia, JME, Lorne, roba davvero casuale. Le mie influenze preferite di tutti i tempi però, dal punto di vista del cantante, sono Frankie Palmeri, CJ McMahon e David Gunn.

C’è una chiave per leggere l’album? Ascoltarlo ad alto volume o cosa?
Il volume alto aiuta sempre! Ma penso che leggere i testi e cercare di capire il vero significato e l’emozione dietro le canzoni sia la cosa più importante. Non volevamo essere eccessivamente tecnici o preoccuparci di essere musicalmente elitari in questo disco, volevamo solo esprimere il nostro dolore in modo semplice ma efficace. Non andare ad ascoltare l’album con l’intenzione di voler ascoltare la versione musicale di reinventare la ruota, goditela semplicemente per quello che è.

Cosa ne pensi del mondo di oggi? Guerre, pandemie, cambiamenti climatici?
È orribile. L’umanità è fottuta.

La musica può aiutare a superare tutto questo?
Non credo che la musica ci aiuti a superare, ma sicuramente ci aiuta a essere distratti, e lo dico in senso positivo. C’è così tanta bruttezza che accade nel mondo e la stiamo consumando costantemente. Che provenga dai social media, dalle notizie, dalla radio, dai giornali, ecc. Sembra che tu non possa sfuggire al costante destino imminente. La musica è una grande fuga e un modo per entrare in contatto con le persone in modo sano.

La musica dei Vexed dà la giusta energia per superare le difficoltà?
Mi piacerebbe pensarlo. L’energia negativa è molto simile a come suggerisce il nome, negativa, ma con quell’onestà penso che arrivino unità e forza. Spesso cercare di fingere di stare bene quando stai attraversando un momento davvero difficile della tua vita può effettivamente peggiorare le cose. A volte devi solo permetterti di dire “tutto è terribile”, sederti con quei sentimenti e permetterti di elaborarli.

Per affrontare un concerto con le tue parti vocali, qual è il tuo segreto?
Non ho davvero segreti! Ma forse l’insicurezza e il bisogno di dimostrare un punto aiuta? Essendo una donna nella musica, vengo costantemente paragonata ad altre donne o mi viene detto che non sono abbastanza brava e può diventare davvero estenuante. Quindi il mio bisogno di dimostrare alle persone che si sbagliano e mostrare il mio valore mi aiuta davvero a guidarmi.

Hai altre passioni oltre alla musica?
Sì, i miei animali domestici sono la mia passione! Vivo in una fattoria in campagna e abbiamo molti animali che sono i nostri animali domestici. Stare con la natura e aiutare gli animali fa molto bene alla mia salute mentale e al mio benessere. Li amo come se fossero i miei figli e mi danno uno scopo lontano dalla musica di cui non sapevo davvero di aver bisogno fino a quando non è arrivata la pandemia. Anatre, galline, cavalli, cani, l’elenco potrebbe continuare ahah.

Presto andrai in tournée?
SÌ!! Finalmente ci siamo! Ma non è stato ancora annunciato nulla, quindi non posso dire molto altro.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. Tell me about the band, how did Vexed come about?
We are a metal band from England UK. We came about from being in old bands together that we hated! We’d had so many lineup changes over the years that the music had lost its way and we ended up just despising the songs. We wanted to start a project from scratch that was completely our own and had not been tarnished by anyone else. I’d had an idea for a new band and wanted to call it VEXED, my fiancé Willem (drummer)  agreed and it went from there.  Jay (guitarist) took some convincing, haha, but he’s glad he did it now… I think. We met Al through the gigging circuit and he joined later on when we were 2 weeks away from a European tour and needed a bassist. Bit of a baptism of fire but it’s still one of my favourite tours we’ve ever done to this day.

The new album “Negative Energy” is very extreme and violent. Is this the essence of Vexed?
I don’t really consider our music as violent. A lot of people say that they take away a violent feeling from it but it’s not our intention. I think the topics we’re discussing are very heavy and often uncomfortable to hear, so maybe that’s where people get the feeling of violence from? I’d say the core essence of VEXED is pure honesty, painful truth and raw emotion.

You are considered as an alternative metal band, but how do you define the musical style of the band?
People call us a lot of things haha. We’re not really fussed about the category others put us into as there’s so many different genres and subgenres that you could argue about it forever. We just say we’re a metal band and take influences for all different styles of music.

Hard, extreme, energetic music must be accompanied by explicit lyrics. What are the lyrics about?
On Negative Energy, the lyrics are set around the process of grief and the aftermath of losing a loved one. There’s so many obvious things that I could have written about, but I wanted to vent about the things that are often kept hidden after a family member dies. The ugliness of others that comes to light as well as other topics that have really affected me over the past few years.

The band was formed in the midst of the pandemic, did it perhaps give you the desire to vent your anger in songs?
The band was actually formed on New Year’s Day 2019. So we did have a period of time pre-pandemic where we could tour and enjoy live music. It was formed out of pure despair and frustration from trying to make our old bands take off. The pandemic for us actually made something we loved so much, really difficult to enjoy. We were meant to go on tour with Whitechapel, release our album and do a headline tour and much more, but instead we all sat at home! Obviously this isn’t bad in comparison to what others went through but at the time it was the pandemic that stopped us from being a band and we really struggled through it.

Your voice is also very extreme, a lot of growls, do you use a particular technique or do you yell into the microphone?
I use the false chord technique, however I didn’t know that that is what I was actually doing until pretty recently. I’ve always self taught and have spent years trying to get better at my vocals but never went to a professional or looked up videos to try and improve. I always wanted it to just be my own thing. However I was reviewed by a vocal coach online and I happened to see the video, where they described my style and I was like ‘oh wow, that’s what it’s called?’ Haha. So I looked into it more and yeah, apparently I’m a false chord gal.

What are your musical influences?
There’s way too many to list! But I mostly listen to pop, rap, grime, garage and EDM nowadays. I obviously love metal and it’ll always be my favourite genre, but I don’t like listening to it all the time as I don’t want to get bored of it. When we were writing Negative Energy I took influence from The Prodigy, Sia, JME, Lorne, really random stuff. My all time favourite influences though, from a vocalist perspective, are Frankie Palmeri, CJ McMahon and David Gunn.

Is there a key to reading the album? Play it loud or what?
Loud always helps! But I think reading the lyrics and trying to understand the true meaning and emotion behind the songs is the most important thing. We didn’t want to be overly technical or worry about being musically elite on this record, we just wanted to express our pain simply but effectively. Don’t go into listening to the album with the intention of wanting to hear the musical version of reinventing the wheel, just enjoy it for what it is.

What do you think of today’s world? Wars, pandemics, climate change?
It’s horrific. Humanity is fucked.

Can music help to overcome all this?
I don’t think music helps us to overcome but it definitely helps us to be distracted, and I mean that in a positive way. There is so much hideousness happening in the world and we are consuming it constantly. Whether it’s from social media, the news, radio, papers etc. it feels like you can’t escape the constant impending doom. Music is a great escape and a way of connecting with people in a way that is healthy.

Does Vexed’s music give the right energy to overcome difficulties?
I’d like to think so. Negative Energy is very much as it’s name suggests, Negative, but with that honesty I think comes unity and strength. Often trying to pretend you’re okay when you’re going through a really tough time in your life can actually make things even worse. Sometimes you just need to allow yourself to say “everything is terrible”, sit with those feelings and allow yourself to process them.

To face a concert with your vocal parts, what is your secret?
I don’t really have any secrets! But maybe insecurity and feeling a need to prove a point helps? Being a woman in music I’m constantly compared to other women or told I’m not good enough and it can get really exhausting. So my need to prove people wrong and show my worth really helps drive me.

Do you have other passions besides music?
Yes, my pets are my passion! I live on a farm in the countryside and we have lots of animals that are our pets. Being with nature and helping animals is so good for my mental health and well-being. I love them like they’re my children and they give me purpose away from music that I didn’t really know I needed until the pandemic hit. Ducks, chickens, horses, dogs, the list goes on haha.

Are you going on tour soon?
Yes!! Finally we are! But nothing has been announced yet so I can’t really say much else.
