VANDEN PLAS – Intervista al cantante Andy Kuntz
Tornano i progmetallers tedeschi Vanden Plas con il nuovo album “The Empyream Equation Of The Long Lost Things” (leggi qui la recensione). Non c’è più Gunter Werno alle tastiere ma Alessandro Del Vecchio. Ne ho parlato con il cantante Andy Kuntz. Di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao Andy e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Avete quasi sempre avuto una formazione molto stabile, ma ora Gunter Werno ha lasciato la band, cosa è successo?
Ad essere onesti, non lo sappiamo davvero… Qualsiasi cosa, direi, è solo speculazione.
Al suo posto è arrivato Alessandro Del Vecchio, unico non tedesco della band, come lo avete scelto e perché?
La prima volta che ho lavorato con lui è stato nel caso del Frontiers All Star Project dove mi ha chiesto di cantare alcune righe per il singolo “Push through”! Alessandro è un musicista completo, è un ottimo cantante, un grande chitarrista, un incredibile tastierista e un produttore di altissimo livello. Avere una persona del genere tra le nostre file non è solo un sogno musicalmente, ma ormai è già diventato un amico.
Ha portato nuove idee per il nuovo album o era già tutto scritto?
No, non è stato coinvolto nel processo di composizione, ma ha portato un vento fresco nella band e all’improvviso ci siamo sentiti ancora più ispirati. Era aria sotto le nostre ali! Ed è e sarà ovviamente un membro permanente della band, altrimenti sfortunatamente non sarebbe stato un’opzione per noi. È anche disponibile per noi su tutti i nuovi album perché fondamentalmente vogliamo e abbiamo bisogno di avere un’app di linea costante per desiderare che il futuro sia lo stesso in cui abbiamo vissuto nel nostro passato.
Parliamo ora quindi del nuovo album, “The Empyriam Equation Of the Long Lost Things”, come sono nati i vari brani?
Stephan è un mostro nello scrivere canzoni…- Quando è stato il momento giusto, ci siamo seduti e abbiamo ascoltato le sue idee…- Siamo fratelli nello spirito – Lui sa esattamente cosa mi piace e cosa posso usare per sviluppare buone linee vocali e testi. Quindi questa volta lo lasciamo semplicemente scorrere.
È un concept album? Qual è il significato del titolo e dei testi?
No, non è un concept reale! Più come una cronaca di storie diverse che trattano delle cose importanti ed essenziali della vita. Cose a cui non possiamo aggrapparci – e anche cose che abbiamo incautamente dimenticato o perso da qualche parte lungo la strada… proprio le cose che sono necessarie per la realizzazione della nostra vita…
Il significato del design della copertina?
La libellula è una creatura che ci connette con l’energia spirituale e le profondità dell’anima. Quando l’autoinganno ci indebolisce, la magia delle libellule rafforza il potere di rendere i cambiamenti un po’ più facili. Per quanto riguarda il tema dell’album, che riguarda la perdita, il simbolo della libellula funge da riflettore e fornisce aiuto e forza per i nuovi inizi… e c’era anche il meraviglioso collegamento visivo con la croce di Vanden Plas, che ci accompagna su tutti gli album
Musicalmente quali sono le differenze rispetto sia al precedente album e ai primi album?
È sempre difficile valutarlo da soli, perché ci avviciniamo alla scrittura delle canzoni senza alcun calcolo. Penso che in termini di suono ci siamo ricordati di nuovo delle nostre radici e siamo andati avanti in modo completamente fresco e libero, senza alcuna limitazione. Quindi, proprio come ai nostri tempi. Penso che sia questo il motivo per cui anche “The Empyrean Equation Of The Long Lost Things” irradia questa forza speciale, l’estro e lo spirito certo dei primi giorni.
Ma in oltre 30 anni di carriera, quanto sono cambiati i Vanden Plas?
È difficile per me dire quanto siamo cambiati… Penso che abbiamo semplicemente cercato di reinventarci laddove possibile nel corso degli anni – per mostrare nuove sfumature – per svilupparci ulteriormente, come si addice ad una band dal pensiero progressista. Credo che tutti i nostri album abbiano un tratto identificativo molto particolare.
E quanto è cambiato il metal e l’hard rock dai vostri esordi?
Né più né meno che in un decennio così lungo, 30 anni prima della nostra era – c’è sempre cambiamento – ma lo sviluppo dell’intera industria musicale è davvero preoccupante.
State preparando un tour?
Sì, visto il grande successo dell’album sia tra i nostri fan che su tutte le riviste e anche nelle classifiche ufficiali di vari paesi, è più che mai un privilegio prenderci ancora più cura della nostra base.
Progetti futuri?
Stiamo già lavorando al prossimo VP Output!

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. You almost always had a very stable lineup, but now Gunter Werno has left the band, what happened?
To be honest we really don´t know …Anything I would say it´s just be speculation.
Alessandro Del Vecchio, the only non-German in the band, arrived in his place, how did you choose him and why?
The first time i worked with him was in case of the Frontiers All Star Project where he asked me to sing few lines for the single “Push through”! Alessandro is a complete musician, he is an excellent singer, an great guitarist, an incredible keyboard player and top producer. Having such a person in our rows is not only a dream musically, but now he has already become a friend.
Did he bring new ideas for the new album or had it all already been written?
No he was not involved in the composing process but he brought a fresh wind into the band and we were suddenly even more inspired. He was air under our wings! and he is and will be of course a permanent member of the band, otherwise he would unfortunately not have been an option for us. He is also available to us on all new albums because we basically want and need have a constant line app for want the future to be the same as we lived in our past.
So let’s talk now about the new album, “The Empyriam Equation Of the Long Lost Things”, how were the various songs born?
Stephan is a songwriting monster…- When the time was right, we sat down and listened to his ideas…- We are brothers in spirit – He knows exactly what I like and what I can use to develop good vocal lines and lyrics. So this time we just let it flow.
Is it a concept album – and what is the meaning of the title and lyrics?
No, “The Empyrean Equation Of The Long Lost Things” is not a real concept! More like a chronicle of different stories that deal with the important and essential things in life. Things we can’t hold on to – and also the things we have carelessly forgotten or lost somewhere along the way … the very things that are necessary for the fulfillment of our lives …
The meaning of the cover design?
The dragonfly is a creature that connects us with spiritual energy and the depths of the soul. When self-deception weakens us, the magic of dragonflies strengthens the power to make changes a little easier. Regarding the theme of the album, which is about loss, the symbol of the dragonfly fits as a reflector and provides help and strength for new beginnings…and – there was also the wonderful visual connection to the Vanden Plas cross, which accompanies us on all albums.
Musically what are the differences compared to both your first albums and your latest one?
It’s always difficult to evaluate this yourself – because we approach songwriting without any calculation. I think that in terms of sound we remembered our roots again and went on completely fresh and free without any limitations. So just like in our former days. I think that’s why “The Empyrean Equation Of The Long Lost Things” also radiates this special power, the flair and the certain spirit of the early days.
But in more than 30 years of career, how much have Vanden Plas changed?
It’s hard for me to say how much we’ve changed… I think we’ve simply tried to reinvent ourselves wherever possible over the years – to show new shades – to develop further, as it befits a progressive-thinking band. I believe that all of our albums have a very special identifying feature.
And how much has metal and hard rock changed since your beginnings?
Not more or less than in such a long decade 30 years before our era – there is always change – but the development of the entire music industry is really worrying.
Are you preparing a tour?
Yes, due to the great success of the album both with our fans and with all magazines and even in the official charts in various countries, it is more than ever a privilege to take even more care of our base.
Future projects?
We already working on the next VP Output!
