TURIN BRAKES – Intervista su ITALIAN TOUR 2023
Nel 2022 i Turin Brakes, quartetto di South London, hanno pubblicato il loro nono album in studio, Wide-Eyed Nowhere. Ora arrivano in Italian con il loro tour assieme a Dog Byron.
Ciao e piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Come sono nati i Turin Brakes?
Quando eravamo bambini suonavamo le chitarre acustiche nelle nostre stanze per divertimento. La band nasce davvero da questa esperienza e dalla nostra antica amicizia.
Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti musicali?
Chuck Berry, Prince, Stevie Wonder hanno tutti avuto un impatto molto forte dal primo momento che li abbiamo scoperti.
Come nascono le vostre canzoni? Dal testo o dalla musica? Avete ruoli diversi nella creazione?
Per lo più trovo accordi sulla mia chitarra che sembrano farmi una domanda, in seguito mi ritrovo a rispondervi i testi. Non tutti gli accordi sono speciali, a volte succede solo per caso e arriva una canzone. Il resto della band poi aiuta a dare vita alla canzone. A volte Gale assume questo ruolo e sono io che l’aiuto.
Un duo in cui entrambi siete voce e chitarra, mai sentito l’esigenza di aggiungere altri membri o strumenti?
Ne abbiamo sentito subito il bisogno. Non siamo come i Kings of Convenience! Abbiamo sempre avuto una batteria e una band in testa. Adoriamo quel suono, quindi abbiamo inserito Rob Allum ed Eddie Myer nella band molto rapidamente e da allora ci esibiamo quasi sempre in quattro.
Veramente il vostro aka, Turin Brakes, non ha nulla a che vedere con la città di Torino?
Ci piaceva l’idea che riguardasse un luogo. Era davvero un posto fantastico per noi, ma ci piaceva molto il modo in cui suonava. È stato divertente osservare le persone che cercavano di inventare significati sul motivo alla base della scelta del nostro nome. Il suo significato è ambiguo (come le nostre canzoni) proprio per questo motivo: avere spazio per immaginare le cose.
Come è nato Wide-Eyed Nowhere? Cosa avete voluto metterci dentro?
Volevamo solo che fosse un’istantanea del nostro stato di umani al momento della realizzazione. Penso davvero che tutto ciò che puoi fare come artista sia dire “siamo qui” e vedere se il mondo apprezza la tua visione unica delle cose.
Il tour si avvicina, sul palco sarete solo voi due?
No, saremo noi quattro come sempre: Olly, Gale, Rob ed Eddie.
Saranno i Dog Byron che apriranno i vostri live.

Progetti futuri? Cosa promettere ai fans italiani che verranno a vedervi?
La nostra promessa è di assicurarli che torneranno a casa sentendosi accaldati, felici e meglio di quanto non lo fossero prima dello spettacolo!

Hello and nice to have you on the Tuttorock pages. How were Turin Brakes born?
When we were kids we’d jam on acoustic guitars in our rooms for fun. The band really came from this and our ancient friendship.
What were your first musical listenings?
Chuck Berry, Prince, Stevie Wonder all had an impact when we discovered them.
How are your songs born? From text or music? Do you have different roles in creation?
Mostly I find chords on my guitar that seem to ask me a question and then I find myself answering with lyrics. Not all chords are special, it just happens by chance sometimes and a song comes along. The rest of the band then help to bring the song to life. Sometimes Gale takes this role and I just help him too.
A duo where you are both vocals and guitar, ever felt the need to add other members or instruments?
We felt that need immediately. We aren’t like the Kings Of Convenience! We always had drums and a band in our heads. We love that sound so we got Rob Allum and Eddie Myer into the band very quickly and almost always perform as a four piece ever since.
Does your aka, Turin Brakes really have nothing to do with the city of Turin?
We liked the idea of it being about a place. It was a fantasy place really for us but we loved the way it sounded. It’s been fun watching people try to make up meanings for why we have this name. It’s meaning is ambiguous (like our songs) for this very reason – to have space to imagine things.
How was Wide-Eyed Nowhere born? What did you want to put in it?
We just wanted it to be a portrait of where we were as humans at the time of making it. I really think that all you can do as artists is say “we are here” and see if the world values your unique take on things.
The tour is approaching, will it be just you two on stage?
No, it will be the four of us like always – Olly, Gale, Rob and Eddie.
It will be Dog Byron who will open your lives.
Yes, we are very good friends and have toured with the Dogs for years!
Future projects? What to promise to the Italian fans who will come to see you?
Our promise is to make sure they go home feeling warm and happy and better than they did before the show!
