THERE’S A LIGHT – Intervista al chitarrista David Christmann

In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?” (Napalm Records), ho avuto il piacere di intervistare David Christmann, chitarrista della band post rock e ambient THERE’S A LIGHT, fondata nel 2011 come progetto in studio da lui e Jonas Obermüller (tastiere), con Andreas Richau (voce/basso) che si è aggiunto per comporre il loro primo EP, Khartoum, nel 2012. Nel 2013 Jan Lüftner (batteria) e Markus Dold (chitarra) hanno completato la formazione. Dopo quattro anni di lavoro, la band ha pubblicato il suo album di debutto, “A Long Lost Silence” nel luglio del 2018. In seguito la band è partita per un avventuroso tour in Cina, esibendosi in dieci spettacoli di cui alcuni sold out.

Ciao David, benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, parliamo del vostro nuovo album “f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? For what must we hope?”, prima di tutto ti chiedo, perché questo titolo?

Ciao e grazie per questo spazio!

Abbiamo riflettuto molto su cosa possa significare per noi la speranza e se sperare sia una cosa buona o cattiva.

Siamo giunti alla conclusione che la speranza può essere la cosa migliore ma anche la peggiore, se si hanno certe aspettative sulle cose o anche delle utopie.

Tuttavia tutti dobbiamo sperare, perché sperare è vivere.

Apprezzo tantissimo l’intero album, tu, quando l’hai ascoltato per intero per la prima volta, cosa hai pensato?

Ho pensato “wow”, sembra una cosa davvero importante piuttosto che un insieme di canzoni che seguono una certa strada.

Penso di poter parlare a nome di tutti nella band, quando dico che siamo estremamente orgogliosi di ciò che abbiamo creato.

Quando avete composto le 11 canzoni?

Abbiamo iniziato a scriverle circa 3 anni fa, credo, subito dopo il nostro China Tour nel 2018.

Anche se avevamo molte bozze anche prima che si sono poi trasformate nelle canzoni del nuovo album.

Come nasce solitamente una vostra canzone?

Suonando nella nostra sala prove, scrivendo o provando da soli a casa nei nostri studi e talvolta alcuni di noi si incontrano quando gli altri di noi non hanno tempo e semplicemente suoniamo e proviamo cose nuove per poi presentarle agli altri.

Dove e da chi sono stati girati i video di “Elpis” e “Be Brave, Fragile Heart”?

Elpis è stato girato dal nostro buon amico Robby Krings (Vestra Visuals) a Maiorca.

Be Brave, Fragile Heart è stato girato dal nostro batterista Jan Lüftner che ha chiesto ad un’amica, ballerina professionista, di esibirsi nel video.

Due video dove la figura femminile si fonde con la natura, perché avete scelto questo tema?

La natura è un grande sinonimo di speranza e pace, un luogo dove calmarsi e riflettere.

Chi ha realizzato il bellissimo artwork?

L’artwork è opera del nostro amico Oliver Hummel (Hummelgrafik), ha anche realizzato le grafiche per il nostro disco precedente che apprezziamo ancora tantissimo!

Quindi è stato un gioco da ragazzi lavorare di nuovo con lui.

Come vi siete conosciuti e quando avete deciso di formare i “There’s a Light”?

Eravamo tutti già amici, ma in realtà abbiamo iniziato come progetto in studio io e Jonas Obermüller (Tastiere).

Ho formato il progetto con lui quando il mio migliore amico è morto in un incidente d’auto e la musica mi ha aiutato molto a superare quei tempi bui.

Andreas Richau (voce/basso) si è unito più tardi dopo che gli ho chiesto spontaneamente, quando abbiamo avuto la possibilità, di venire in studio per il nostro primo EP, che è stato improvvisato in un fine settimana.

Alcuni anni dopo Jonas ha dovuto trasferirsi in un luogo diverso dove non potevamo fare musica facilmente.

Jan (batteria) e Markus Dold (chitarra) mi hanno contattato dopo il nostro primo EP perché a loro piaceva quello che facevamo e suonavamo molto per divertirci, ho quindi pensato che fosse una bella idea andare avanti e fondare i “There’s A Light”.

Da cosa è stato ispirato il nome della band?

Il nome della band è abbastanza facile, ma cruciale.

Come ho detto, stavo attraversando tempi molto bui e la musica mi ha sempre dato speranza, quindi ho pensato che fosse un nome fantastico e appropriato.

Ascoltandovi mi sono fatto un’idea di voi come ascoltatori di creatori di colonne sonore come Danny Elfman o Hans Zimmer ma anche di band come Sigur Rós o God Is An Astronaut, che tipo di musica ascoltate di solito?

Tutti ascoltiamo praticamente tutto.

Ho iniziato ascoltando molto i Radiohead e il Post Rock, ma anche cose come Sigur Rós e molti artisti neoclassici come Olafur Arnalds o Nils Frahm.

Anche il metal, la musica elettronica, il folk e il pop sono una parte importante per tutti noi.

Parlami un po’ dell’esperienza del tour in Cina.

La Cina è stata surreale, non siamo mai stati in tour prima e abbiamo sempre fatto piccoli concerti solo in Germania.

In Cina le persone ci trattavano come “vere rockstar”, volevano autografi, foto e impazzivano letteralmente quando ci vedevano dal vivo, è stato un periodo bellissimo e pazzesco che tutti noi non dimenticheremo mai e ci ha dato molta energia.

State organizzando un tour?

Vogliamo fare un tour quest’anno attraverso la Germania e l’Europa, ma a causa del Covid purtroppo la situazione è poco chiara.

Ma ci manca suonare dal vivo, quindi speriamo!

State già componendo nuove canzoni o vi concentrerete sulla promozione di questo disco?

Stiamo lavorando a nuove canzoni e nuove idee continuamente e, dal momento che non possiamo suonare dal vivo in questo momento, è tutto ciò che possiamo fare per ora.

Grazie mille, vuoi aggiungere qualcosa per concludere questa intervista?

Vogliamo solo ringraziare tutti coloro che ci stanno supportando in ogni modo possibile.

On the occasion of the release of the new album “f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? For what must we hope?” (Napalm Records), I had the pleasure of interviewing David Christmann, guitarist of the post rock and ambient band THERE’S A LIGHT, founded in 2011 as a studio project by him and Jonas Obermüller (keyboards), with Andreas Richau (vocals / bass) who is added to compose their first EP, Khartoum, in 2012. In 2013 Jan Lüftner (drums) and Markus Dold (guitar) completed the lineup. After four years of work, the band released their debut album, “A Long Lost Silence” in July 2018. The band then went on an adventurous tour of China, performing in ten shows, some of which were sold out.

Hi David, welcome to the pages of Tuttorock, let’s talk about your new album “f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? For what must we hope?”, first of all I ask you why this title?

Hello and thanks for having us!

We thought a lot about what hope means to us, and whether is a good or a bad thing to have hope.

We came to the conclusion that hope can be the best thing but also the worst, if you have certain expectations about things or even utopias.

Nonetheless we all have to hope, because to hope is to live.

I love the whole album, you, when you first listened to it in full, what did you think?

I thought “wow” it feels like 1 big thing rather than just songs in a certain row.

I think i can speak for everybody in the band, when i say we are extremely proud of what we created.

When did you compose the 11 songs?

We started writing like 3 years ago i think, right after our China Tour in 2018.

Although we had a lot of sketches even before that, which lead to songs on the new album.

How is your song usually born?

By jamming in our rehearsal room, writing or looping alone at home in our studios and sometimes several of us meet when the other have no time and we just play around and try new things and present it to the others.

Where and by whom were the videos for “Elpis” and “Be Brave, Fragile Heart” shot?

Elpis was shot by our good friend Robby Krings (Vestra Visuals) it was filmed in Mallorca.

Be Brave, Fragile Heart was actually shot alone by our Drummer Jan Lüftner who asked a friend which is a professional dancer to perform in the Video.

Two videos where the female figure blends with nature, why did you choose this theme?

The nature is a great synonym for hope and peace, a place to calm down and to reflect.

Who made the beautiful artwork?

The Artwork is from our friend Oliver Hummel (Hummelgrafik), he also did the Artwork for our previous record which we still love so much!

So it was a no brainer to work with him again.

How did you meet and when did you decide to form “There’s a Light”?

We all were friends before, but actually we started out as a studio project by me and Jonas Obermüller (Keys/Synths).

I formed the project with him when my best friend died in a car accident and music literally helped me a lot to get through these dark times.

Andreas Richau (Vocals/Bass) later joined after i asked him spontaneously when we got the chance to hit the studio for our first EP which was kind of improvised in one weekend.

Some years later Jonas had to move to a different location where we couldn’t easily make music.

Jan (Drums) and Markus Dold (Guitar) got in touch with me after our first EP because they liked what we did and we jammed a lot for fun and i thought it was a cool idea to go ahead and make “There’s A Light” a band.

What was the band name inspired by?

The Bandname is pretty easy, but crucial.

As I said I was going through very dark times and the music always gave me hope, so i thought it was a great and fitting name.

Listening to you I got an idea of you as listeners to soundtrack creators like Danny Elfman or Hans Zimmer but also bands like Sigur Rós or God Is An Astronaut but what kind of music do you usually listen to?

We all listen to pretty much everything.

I started out listening to a lot of Radiohead and Post Rock, but also things like Sigur Rós and a lot of Neo Classic like Olafur Arnalds or Nils Frahm.

Metal, Electronic Music, Folk and Pop are also a big part for everyone sort of.

Tell me a little about the tour experience in China.

China was surreal, we never toured before and always played tiny gigs only in Germany.

In China people treated us like “real rockstars”, wanted autographs, photos and literally went nuts when they saw us live. it was a mad beautiful time which we all will never forget and gave us a lot of energy.

Are you planning a tour?

We want to tour this year through Germany and Europe but since Covid everything is pretty unclear.

But we miss playing live, so let’s hope!

Are you already composing new songs or will you now concentrate on promoting this record?

We are working on new songs and sketches every time, and since we cannot play live right now, it’s all we can do for now.
