THE HARLEM SPIRIT OF GOSPEL CHOIR – Intervista ad Anthony Morgan

Buongiorno Anthony, piacere di conoscerci. Innanzi tutto vorrei spiegassi ai lettori come nasce il gospel e cosa esso rappresenta.
La musica gospel è nata nelle chiese afroamericane negli Stati Uniti meridionali. La parola vangelo significa “buona notizia”. Rappresenta il messaggio di Cristo.

Pensi che la musica possa essere un mezzo per far conoscere ed avvicinare le persone a Dio? Portare il suo verbo nel mondo?
Assolutamente sì. La musica è l’unica connessione che alcune persone hanno verso Dio. Ha permesso a coloro che non conosceranno mai l’esperienza della Chiesa americana, di poter usare la passione della musica per ammirare la potenza di Dio.

Il vostro spettacolo è diretto a tutti, credenti e non credenti?
Il nostro spettacolo è diretto a tutti coloro che desiderano riceverlo. Dio ci ama tutti, e viviamo in quello stesso amore per tutti, attraverso la musica. 

Vi avvalete di una strumentazione sul palco o solo il vostro coro?
Usiamo strumentazione sul palco perché contribuisce alla nostra espressività. Ogni pubblico è diverso e la musica dal vivo ci consente di adattarci alle esigenze del pubblico.

I componenti del gruppo sono sempre gli stessi o cambiano? Essi sono professionisti del mestiere?
Ho un nucleo principale di membri che rimane per lo più lo stesso, e sono tutti professionisti. 

Il vostro repertorio propone canzoni e musica già esistente o ne avete anche composta ex-novo da voi?
Sì, a volte eseguiamo musica che esiste già. Tuttavia, scriviamo anche le nostre canzoni e facciamo arrangiamenti speciali di alcune canzoni.

Steve Wonder, Diana Ross, Cindy Lauper, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, di tutti questi artisti con cui avete lavorato hai ricordi o aneddoti particolari da raccontare?
Oh si! Ho incontrato Cher mentre suonavo al Museo di Storia Naturale di New York. Si è avvicinata a noi e ha espresso il suo amore per la musica gospel. L’ho invitata sul palco a cantare la prossima canzone con noi e lei ha obbedito. Desiderava un’altra esperienza del Vangelo, ha chiesto dove poteva trovarci e l’ho invitata alla mia chiesa. Domenica mattina, siamo rimasti sorpresi e onorati di averla durante la funzione con noi.

Quale musica Ti piace ascoltare al momento?
Amo tutti i tipi di musica. Il Gospel è composto da tanti stili diversi, sono aperto a jazz, soul, blues, ecc.

Cosa puoi promettere ai fans che verranno a vedervi a Bologna?
Posso promettergli che saranno benedetti, divertiti e forse un poco stanchi da tutte le preghiere e le danze.

Good morning Anthony, nice to meet you. First of all I would like to explain to readers how gospel is born and what it represents.
Gospel music began in the African American churches in the southern United States. The word gospel means “good news”. It represents the message of Christ.

Do you think that music can be a means of making people known and brought closer to God? Bring his word into the world?
Most certainly. Music is the only connection some people have to God. It has allowed those who will never know the American church experience, to still be directly connected to the passion of the music as well as the power of God.

Is your show directed to everyone, believers and non-believers?
Our show is directed to any and everyone willing to receive it. God loves us all, and we live in that same love for all, through music.

Do you use an instrumentation on the stage or just your choir?
We use instrumentation on stage because it contributes to our ministerial freedom. Each audience is different, and live music allows us to adjust to the needs of the audiences.

Are the group members always the same or do they change? Are they professionals of the trade?
I have a core group of members that mostly remains the same, and they are all professionals.

Does your repertoire propose songs and music that already exist or do you also have it re-created by you?
Yes, we sometimes perform music that already exists. However, we also write our own songs and do special arrangements of certain songs.

Steve Wonder, Diana Ross, Cindy Lauper, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, of all these artists you’ve worked with do you have any special memories or anecdotes to tell?
Oh yes! I met Cher while performing at The Museum of Natural History in NYC. She approached us and expressed her love for gospel music. I invited her on stage to sing the next song with us and she obliged. Eager for another gospel experience, she asked where she could find us and I invited her to my church. On Sunday morning, we were surprised and honored to have her worship with us.

Which music do you like to listen to at the moment?
I love all types of music. Because Gospel is comprised of so many different styles, I’m open to jazz, soul, blues etc.

What can you promise to the fans who will come to see you in Bologna?
I can promise that you will be blessed, entertained and maybe a little tired from all the praising and dancing.
