THE BRONX – Intervista a Ken Horne sulla band
In occasione dell’uscita del loro nuovo album “VI” ho intervistato Ken Horne, chitarrista dei THE BRONX.
Ciao e piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Grande disco di punk-rock VI, quali sono stati i vostri ispiratori in questo genere?
Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Black Flag, band proto-punk come gli Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, ecc… Troppe band da menzionare!
La musica è fatta di mode, il punk ha ancora un suo spazio vitale? Ascoltandovi pare di essere nella Londra dei Clash ? ?
Il punk è più della moda. Ma penso che all’inizio, quando il “punk” è diventato popolare, c’era un certo aspetto che proveniva dal punto di vista della moda. Ci piacciono i Clash, ma il nostro mood non ne è influenzato. Non seguiamo le mode! E c’è sempre spazio vitale per il punk!
Cosa è cambiato con la produzione di Joe Barresi nel vostro sound?
È un maestro del suono! Penso che la scrittura delle canzoni fosse buona, ma lui ci ha portato a un altro livello dal punto di vista del suono. Mi piace molto la produzione di questo album. È stata la mia Top 3 delle esperienze di registrazione che ho avuto! Personalmente direi che ci ha influenzato decisamente, e ha tirato fuori un sacco di cose fantastiche per la mia chitarra. Per le prestazioni di tutti, in realtà.
L’entrata di Joey Castillo cosa ha portato di diverso nella vostra band?
Joey è fantastico. Ha portato molto! Ovviamente è un batterista molto creativo e potente. Ed è un ragazzo così ispirato come creatività, è stato fantastico scrivere e registrare con lui. Il solo fatto che lui fosse in giro con noi ha reso tutto diverso e figo.
La pandemia ha influito sulla composizione di VI?
Abbiamo scritto e registrato questo album nel 2019, quindi no. Ma ha influenzato il modo in cui l’abbiamo rilasciato.
Come vedete il panorama musicale oggi? Con tutti questi talent show.
C’è spazio per tutto. Non mi piacciono i talent show televisivi personalmente, ma dà a qualcuno, che altrimenti non ne avrebbe la possibilità, o i mezzi, di uscire allo scoperto e mostrare cosa sa fare.
Avete in previsione una versione mariachi anche di VI? Da dove nasce questa vostra passione per la musica mariachi?
In realtà il prossimo album dei MEB sarà IV. Ma sì, ci sono sempre piani per MEB. Ci stiamo lavorando, lentamente, ma inesorabilmente.
Progetti futuri? Un nuovo tour? Vi vedremo anche in Italia?Bene, a
bbiamo ancora le nostre uscite mensili di canzoni. A partire da ora, abbiamo altri 5 singoli da pubblicare e anche fantastici merch e video. Sul fronte dei tour abbiamo un tour negli USA che va fino a metà ottobre con Rancid e Dropkick Murphys. Suoneremo al Riot Fest e al Punk Rock Bowling a settembre. E a gennaio/febbraio 2022, saremo in tournée nel Regno Unito con Every time I Die. E speriamo in un tour europeo che includa l’Italia!!

Hello and nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. Great punk-rock VI record, what were your inspirations in this genre?
Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Black Flag, proto-punk bands like the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, etc… Too many bands to mention!
Is music made of fashions, does punk still have its own vital space? Listening to you it seems to be in the London of the Clash ? ?
Punk is more than fashion. But I think at first when “punk” first got popular, there was a certain aspect of it that came from the fashion angle. We like The Clash, but our fashion isn’t influenced by them. We have no fashion! And there is always vital space for punk!
What has changed with Joe Barresi’s production in your sound?
He’s a sonic master! I think the song writing was there, and he took us to another level sound-wise. I really like the production on this album. It was my Top 3 recording experiences I have had! Personally he was a big influence, and he brought out a lot of cool guitar stuff out of me. For everyone’s performance, actually.
What did the entry of Joey Castillo bring different to your band?
Joey is great. He brought a lot! He’s a very creative and powerful drummer obviously. Ands he is such an inspirational guy, it was great writing and recording with him. Just him being around was different and cool.
Has the pandemic affected the composition of VI?
We wrote and recorded this album in 2019, so no. But it did affect how we released it.
How do you see the music landscape today? With all these talent shows.
There’s room for everything. I’m not into the talent tv shows personally, but it gives someone that doesn’t have a chance or the means otherwise to come out and show what talents they have.
Are you planning a mariachi version of VI too? Where does your passion for mariachi music come from?
Actually MEB’s next album will be IV. But yes, there is always plans for MEB. We are slowly but surely working on it.
Future projects? A new tour? Will we also see you in Italy?
Well, we still have our monthly song releases left. As of now, we still have 5 more singles to release and cool merch and videos too. On the touring front we have a USA tour that goes till mid-October with Rancid and Dropkick Murphys. We are playing Riot Fest and Punk Rock Bowling in September. And in Jan/Feb 2022, we are touring UK with Every time I Die. And hopefully an EU tour that includes Italy!!
