SYMPHONITY – Intervista al bassista Tomas Sklenar

Dopo una decina di anni di inattività tornano i Symphonity, band della Repubblica Ceca che predilige l’heavy metal sinfonico. Tornano con un nuovo album che uscirà nel 2022 e sarà un concept sulla vita di Marco Polo e un nuovo contratto, quello con l’italiana Rock On Agency. Ho avuto modo di parlarne con il bassista Tomas Sklenar e ciò che segue è il resoconto dell’intervista.

Ciao ragazzi e benvenuti su Tuttorock.com. Come nascono i Symphonity?
Ciao e grazie per l’intervista. Bene, la band è nata ufficialmente nel 2008 trasformandosi dal suo precedente nome Nemesis, che ha pubblicato l’album singolo Goddess of Revenge (2003). A quei tempi, la band ha attraversato molti cambiamenti, Olaf Hayer è diventato un cantante, Marthus Skaroupka (ora nei Cradle of Filth) è diventato un batterista e tutto è andato di pari passo con il cambio di nome della band. Quindi la band è nata per sviluppo naturale e subito dopo è stato pubblicato l’album Voice From The Silence.

Avete avuto 10 anni di inattività e tornate con una nuova line-up e nuove idee. Cosa è successo?
Dopo aver pubblicato l’album Voice From The Silence, la band ha suonato in molti grandi festival, era molto attiva e popolare. Il lavoro sul nuovo album è stato interrotto dalla morte improvvisa dell’ex bassista Tomáš Čelechovský, che è stato un grande shock per tutti i ragazzi della band. Molti incidenti negativi avvennero negli anni successivi, il cantante Olaf Hayer ebbe alcuni problemi di salute e tutto ciò portò a ritardare il lavoro sul nuovo album e alla necessità di sospendere temporaneamente i concerti. Il secondo album King Of Persia è stato terminato e pubblicato nel 2016. Dopo l’uscita è stato sempre più chiaro che la precedente formazione era insostenibile perché non era reale gestire il tour per supportare questo album perché molti membri della band avevno iniziato a suonare in altri gruppi (Marthus nei Cradle of Filth, Herbie Langhans negli Avantasia) mentre gli altri non hanno potuto assolutamente suonare dal vivo. Quindi il leader della band Libor Krivak ha deciso di cambiare la formazione, cosa che è avvenuta nel 2018. Da questo momento, la formazione è stata leggermente modificata alcune volte fino a quando non è diventata la sua forma attuale, che ha iniziato a lavorare su nuovo materiale. Quindi si trattava di un paio di circostanze negative che hanno ritardato il lavoro della band. Ma ora siamo completi, più forti che mai e affamati di spettacoli dal vivo, oltre a pubblicare il nuovo album e mostrarlo ai nostri fan così come ai nostri nuovi potenziali fan.

Nel vostro nuovo album c’è Jana Hrochovà, per ampliare la vostra conoscenza di musica sinfonica?
Non direi così. Jana Hrochová ha collaborato con noi all’ultima pubblicazione King Of Persia, dove ha registrato una parte vocale nella title track dell’album. In alcune delle nostre nuove canzoni, vorremmo usare di nuovo questo tipo di voce d’opera. Jana è una cantante fantastica, canta per un teatro nazionale a Brno. La nostra ultima esperienza è stata molto positiva da entrambe le parti, quindi è per questo che le abbiamo chiesto di partecipare al nuovo album. Ha accettato di buon grado la nostra offerta e ne siamo più che contenti.

Il vostro nome deriva proprio dalle vostre influenze classiche?
Sì, è sicuramente collegato al fatto che la nostra musica è sinfonica e si basa su influenze classiche. Volevamo anche trovare un nome originale, il nome dell’ex band Nemesis è stato usato molte volte in passato, quindi questa è la parte del motivo per cui abbiamo deciso di cambiarlo.

Il vostro nuovo album è un concept sulla vita di Marco Polo, perché questa scelta?
E’ stata un’idea di Libor. Nell’ultimo album sono stati utilizzati alcuni strumenti etnici nella title track e funziona molto bene. Libor è influenzato dalle famose serie TV italo-americane degli anni ’80, nasce l’idea di realizzare l’intero album sul viaggio di Marco Polo, che ci dà la possibilità di utilizzare diversi elementi compositivi e strumenti etnici. Marco ha viaggiato attraverso molte terre diverse e abbiamo cercato di creare un’atmosfera musicalmente corrispondente ai suoi passi in un modo power metal. 

Siete oramai una band multietnica, alcuni di voi sono della Repubblica Ceca, altri dall’Ucraina, dalla Slovacchia e se non sbaglio anche dalla Svezia. Come vi siete incontrati?
Sì, hai perfettamente ragione, la formazione attuale proviene da quattro paesi diversi. Non è successo all’improvviso. La nostra musica non è la più facile da suonare ed eseguire, quindi non ci sono troppi musicisti che possono suonarla nella nostra zona. Quelli che sono bravi di solito hanno le loro band e non sono interessati a una possibile collaborazione. Quindi abbiamo cercato persone che fossero affidabili e bravi musicisti. Non siamo riusciti a trovarli nella Repubblica Ceca, quindi abbiamo deciso di non ridurre le nostre richieste ma di cercare ulteriormente. Puoi vedere il risultato, ora ci sono davvero grandi musicisti nella band ed è un onore per me far parte di questa formazione. Il nucleo dalla Repubblica Ceca è composto da me, Libor (chitarrista, compositore principale e membro ricercatore) e Joseph Cigánek, sicuramente uno dei migliori batteristi in Europa. Poi il nostro cantante Mayo Petranin (ex Signum Regis) vive in Slovacchia, il secondo cantante Konstantin (puoi conoscerlo dalle band Sunrise o Blood Brothers) è di Kiev, in Ucraina e il nostro tastierista Johannes viene dalla Svezia. Tutti loro sono persone e musicisti davvero fantastici.

Come è nato l’incontro con l’italiana Rock On Agency?
Konstantin ce l’ha consigliata perché ha collaborato con l’agenzia in passato. Così siamo entrati in contatto con loro e siamo diventati partner. Semplicemente per questo motivo.

C’è un motivo particolare per la scelta di fare uscire l’album nel 2022?
No, no c’è un motivo particolare. Lavorare al nuovo album dura più di quanto ci aspettassimo inizialmente, il che è stato in parte causato dai cambiamenti di formazione negli ultimi anni. Abbiamo anche deciso di non pubblicare l’album durante le restrizioni del covid, quindi abbiamo aspettato l’ultimo anno per vedere come evolverà la situazione. Vorremmo far uscire l’album prima alla fine del 2021 ma poi abbiamo concordato con la nostra etichetta Limb Music di posticipare l’uscita al 2022.

Le vostre influenze musicali?
Ci sono molte influenze musicali nella band, ogni membro ha un background diverso e possiamo combinare le nostre influenze insieme. Per quanto riguarda i miei personali, mi piacciono le band heavy metal classiche come Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Rainbow e molti altri; poi anche le band power metal e symphonic metal, dove i miei preferiti sono i Rhapsody Of Fire e i Therion. Mi piace la buona musica pop (che sicuramente non è quella creata in questi giorni) e anche la musica classica che probabilmente ha influenzato la maggior parte di noi nella band.

Molto affascinante è il disegno di copertina, chi lo ha ideato?
Il design della copertina è stato creato in occasione dell’uscita del nostro singolo Crimson Silk. L’autore è Dusan Markovic. Lavora anche al nuovo design della copertina che decorerà il lato anteriore del nuovo album. Il design di Crimson Silk sarà anche sul design del nuovo album così come sul singolo Crimson Silk stesso.

Avete pensato alla scrittura dell’album durante la pandemia?
Avevamo già scritto qjalcosa prima del covid, quindi abbiamo appena terminato il processo mentre era limitato l’incontro con i fan in concerti e festival. Come ho già detto, aspettiamo l’uscita perché vogliamo andare in tour per supportare il nuovo album. Rilasciarsi senza un tour e suonare dal vivo non ha alcun senso per noi. L’abbiamo già sperimentato una volta e non vogliamo rifarlo.

Avete già programmato qualche data live?
Stiamo lavorando per gestire le date live costantemente. Avevamo programmato di fare un tour europeo nel 2021, ma le date sono state recentemente posticipate per il prossimo anno. Siamo pronti per il rock, aspettando solo che questa pazza merda finisca, così possiamo viaggiare liberamente senza condizioni insignificanti e restrizioni governative. Fino a quando non succede, è difficile dirti date specifiche. Posso solo dire che stiamo lavorando a grandi cose!

Grazie Tomas! Chiudi l’intervista come vuoi, un messaggio per il pubblico italiano.
Vorrei salutare tutti i nostri fan in Italia. Siamo molto tristi di aver cancellato il nostro spettacolo a Milano lo scorso marzo (insieme ai Rhapsody Of Fire) e voglio solo assicurarvi che vogliamo tornare il prima possibile. Fino a quel momento, statr attenti e non lasciate che gli altri pensino per voi! Grazie a te Fabio e a Tuttorock per l’intevista!

Hi guys and welcome to Tuttorock.com. How are Symphonity born?
Hi and thank you for the possibility to talk here. Well, the band was officially born back in 2008 by transforming from its predecessor called Nemesis, which released single album Goddess of Revenge (2003). Back in those times, the band went through many changes, Olaf Hayer became a singer, Marthus Skaroupka (now in Cradle of Filth) became a drummer and it all went together with a band´s name change. So, the band was born by natural development and right after that the album Voice From The Silence was released.

You have had 10 years of inactivity and come back with a new line-up and new ideas. What happened?
After releasing the album Voice From The Silence, the band played many big festivals, was very active and popular. Working on the new album was stopped by a sudden death of former bass player Tomáš Čelechovský, which was a big shock for all the guys in the band. Many negative incidents happened in following years, singer Olaf Hayer had some health issues and it all led to delaying the work on new album and to the necessity of temporary suspension of playing live. The second album King Of Persia was finished and released in 2016. After the release it was more and more clear that the former line up is untenable because it was not real to manage the tour to support this album because many band members became to play in other bands (Marthus in Cradle of Filth, Herbie Langhans in Avantasia) while the other ones were not able to play live at all. So the leader of the band Libor Krivak decided to change the line up, which happened in 2018. From this time, the line up was slightly changed few times until it gets into its current form, which began to work on new material. So it was all about the couple of negative circumstances which delayed the work of the band. But now we are complete, stronger than ever before and hungry for live shows as well as releasing the new album and showing it to our fans as well as to our new potential fans.

Is Jana Hrochovà on your new album, to broaden your knowledge of symphonic music?
I wouldn´t say so. Jana Hrochová cooperated with us on the last release King Of Persia, where she recorded a vocal part in the title track of the album. In some of our new songs, we would like to use this kind of opera voice again. Jana is fantastic singer, she sings for a National Theater in Brno. Our last experience was very positive from both sides, so that´ s why we asked her for being on the new album. She gladly accepted our offer and we are more than glad for this.

Does your name derive from your classical influences?
Yes, it´s definitely connected with the fact that our music is symphonic and based on classical influences. We also wanted to find an original name, the former band´s name Nemesis was used many times in the past, so that´s the part of the reason why we decided to change it.

Your new album is a concept on the life of Marco Polo, why this choice?
The whole concept is Libor´s idea. In the last album, some ethnic instruments were used in the title track and it works very well. Libor influenced by the famous US/Italian TV series from the 80s, get the idea of making the whole album about the journey of Marco Polo, which gets us the possibility to use different composition elements and ethnic instruments. Marco travelled through many different lands and we tried to create musically corresponding atmosphere of his steps in a power metal way.

You are now a multi-ethnic band, some of you are from the Czech Republic, others from Ukraine, Slovakia and if I’m not mistaken also from Sweden. How did you meet?
Yes, you´re totally right, the current line up is from four different countries. It didn´t happen suddenly. Our music is not the easiest one to play and perform, so there are not too much musicians who can play it in our local area. Those who are good usually have their own bands and are not interested in possible in Czech republic, so we decided not to reduce our demands but to search further. You can see the result, which is that there are really great musicians in the band now and it´s an honor for me to be part of that line up. The core from the Czech republic consists of me, Libor (guitar player, main composer and finding member) and Joseph Cigánek, definitely one of the best drummers in Europe. Then our singer Mayo Petranin (ex Signum Regis) lives in Slovakia, the second singer Konstantin (you can know him from bands Sunrise or Blood Brothers) is from Kyiv, Ukraine and our keyboard player Johannes comes from Sweden. All of them are really great people and musicians.

How was the meeting with Rock On Agency born?
Konstantin recommended it to us because he cooperated with the agency in the past. So we get into a contact and became partners. It´s simple as that.

Is there a particular reason for choosing to release the album in 2022?
I do not think so. Working on the new album lasts more than we originally expected, which was partly caused by line up changes in the last few years. We also decided not to release the album during covidism restrictions, so we waited for the last year for how the situation will evolve. We would like to release the album at the end of 2021 first but then we agreed with our label Limb Music to postpone the release for 2022.

Your musical influences?
There are many musical influences in the band, each member has different background and we can combine our influences together. About my personal ones, I like classical heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Rainbow and many more; then also the power metal and symphonic metal bands, where my favorites are Rhapsody Of Fire or Therion. I like good pop music (which is definitely not the one created in these days) and also classical music which probably influenced most of us in the band.

The cover design is very fascinating, who created it?
The cover design was created on occasion of the release of our single Crimson Silk. The author is Dusan Markovic. He also works on the new cover design which will ornament the front side of the new album. The Crimson Silk design will be also on the new album design as well as the Crimson Silk single itself.

Have you thought about writing the album during the pandemic?
We already wrote a music before the covid so we just finish the process while it was restricted to meet with fans in concerts and festivals. As I already said, we wait with the release because we want to go on tour in order to support the new album. Releasing itself without a tour and playing live at all has no sense for us. We have experienced it once before and do not want to do it again.

Are you already thinking about some live dates?
We are working on managing live dates constantly. We planned to go on European tour during 2021, but the dates were postponed recently for the next year. We are ready to rock, just waiting until this crazy shit will end so we can travel freely without meaningless conditions and government restrictions. Until it happens, it´s hard to tell you specific dates. I just can say, we´re working on big things!

Close the interview as you wish for the Italian public
I would like to greet all our fans in Italy. We are very sad of cancelling our show in Milan last March (together with Rhapsody Of Fire) and I just want to make you sure that we want to come back as soon as it will be possible.
