SYML – Intervista a Brian Fennell su DIM
In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “DIM” ho intervistato BRIAN FENNELL aka SYML.
Buongiorno Brian, complimenti per il tuo bellissimo album e piacere di averti sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Inizierei con il chiederti quali sono stati i primi dischi hai ascoltato da giovane e che ti hanno fatto appassionare alla musica.
Grazie! Da ragazzino, i primi dischi che ho ascoltato sono stati Into The Great Wide Open (Tom Petty), Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins), Superunknown (Soundgarden) e Rhythm Of The Saints (Paul Simon). Tutti mi hanno insegnato tanto su melodia e armonia.
Come è nata la decisione di intraprendere la carriera professionale nel settore musicale?
Ho studiato educazione musicale all’università, ma la mia band, i Barcelona, è nata proprio prima della laurea e ho proseguito. Sono grato per il tempo passato all’università, perché, mi ha insegnato un sacco di cose e per questo conosco bene la musica oggi.
La tua carriera è iniziata in una band rock come i Barcelona, ora sei passato a un genere molto più classico. A cosa è dovuta la trasformazione?
Dopo essere stato in una band per 10 anni, penso che fosse necessario un cambiamento per riscoprire ciò che amo della musica e delle canzoni. La cosa divertente è che in realtà avevo scritto alcune canzoni SYML durante gli ultimi anni dei Barcelona, e sarebbero state canzoni dei Barcelona, ma all’epoca eravamo su un percorso musicale così diverso che non avrebbe avuto senso. In quel periodo ho iniziato a imparare come superare i confini della creazione. Sto ancora cercando di migliorare in questo!
A cosa è dovuta la decisione di passare da una produzione che facevi totalmente in solitudine, a un lavoro di gruppo con Paul Meany e Paul Visciano?
In realtà ho lavorato con Joe Visciano per quasi tutti gli anni di vita dei SYML, come ingegnere del mix. Potrei produrre tutto in solitudine e lui lo farebbe suonare bene egualmente :). Paul è un nuovo amico e sono un fan del suo lavoro da anni. Ho adorato il modo in cui interpretava le canzoni, quindi la collaborazione è stata molto naturale sin dall’inizio. La collaborazione può essere molto salutare e influenzare il lavoro che farai da solo in futuro, quindi sono grato per aver incontrato Paul!
Hai aggiunto Taylor Johnson e Charlotte Lawrence nel tuo disco, come è avvenuto il vostro incontro e la scelta di lavorare assieme?
Taylor e io ci siamo conosciuti alcuni anni fa tramite un amico, è un chitarrista straordinario. Ha suonato la chitarra nel mio primo album e da allora è diventato un partner fisso. Ho incontrato Charlotte su Instagram dopo che mi ha contattato per dire che era una mia fan. Ho ascoltato la sua musica e mi sono innamorato della sua voce. Le ho mandato della musica su cui stavo lavorando per vedere se si collegava a qualcosa, e l’ha fatto! È così divertente lavorare con lei perché la sua voce e le sue idee risultano così semplici. A volte non è così, soprattutto per me!
Fra tutte le colonne sonore su cui hai lavorato, ce ne è qualcuna cui sei particolarmente legato?
Anche se devo ancora lavorare su una vera colonna sonora in maniera completa, mi è piaciuto ascoltare la mia musica nei programmi TV e nei film. Uno dei più recenti, che è stato fantastico, è stata la mia cover di Mr. Sandman usata in Behind Her Eyes su Netflix. Ho adorato quello spettacolo, quindi ascoltare la mia canzone in esso è stato davvero fantastico.
Progetti futuri? Hai in programma un tour quando sarà possibile?
Certamente! Attualmente sto registrando il mio secondo album completo qui a Seattle e sta andando alla grande. Amo queste canzoni. E sì, stiamo pianificando di annunciare le date del tour quando sarà assolutamente certo poterlo fare di sicuro. Sembra che ci siamo quasi arrivati! Grazie.

Hello Brian, congratulations on your beautiful album and nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. I would start by asking you which were the first records you listened to as a young man and which made you passionate about music.
Thank you! As a young kid, the first records that spoke to me were Into The Great Wide Open (Tom Petty), Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins), Superunknown (Soundgarden), and Rhythm Of The Saints (Paul Simon). They all taught me a ton about melody and harmony.
How did the decision to pursue a professional career in the music sector come about?
I studied music education at university, but my band, Barcelona, started right before graduation and I pursued that instead. I’m thankful for my time at university though, it taught me a ton about how I understand music today.
Your career started in a rock band like Barcelona, now you have moved on to a much more classic genre. What is the transformation due to?
After being in a band for 10 years, I think a change was needed to rediscover what I love about music and songs. What’s funny is that I had actually written a few SYML songs during the last few years of Barcelona, and they would’ve been Barcelona songs but we were on such a different musical path at the time it wouldn’t have made sense. During that time I started to learn how to take boundaries off of creating. I am still trying to learn that!
What is the reason for the decision to move from a production that you did totally in solitude, to a group work with Paul Meany and Paul Visciano?
I have actually worked with Joe Visciano for almost as many years as SYML has been around, as a mix engineer. I would produce everything in solitude, and he would make it all sound good :). Paul is a new friend, and I’ve actually been a fan of his work for years. I loved how he understood songs, so the partnership was very natural from the beginning. Collaboration can be very healthy and inform the work you do in solitude in the future, so I am thankful for meeting Paul!
Did you add Taylor Johnson and Charlotte Lawrence to your record, how did your meeting and the choice to work together come about?
Taylor and I met a few years ago through a friend, he’s an amazing guitar player. He played some guitar on my first album and has been a great partner ever since. I met Charlotte on Instagram after she reached out to say she was a fan. I listened to her music and fell in love with her voice. I sent her some music I was working on to see if she connected to anything, and she did! She is so fun to work with because her voice and ideas seem so effortless. Sometimes that’s not the case, especially for me!
Of all the soundtracks you’ve worked on, is there any that you have special memories of?
While I have yet to work on an actual soundtrack from a scoring perspective, I have loved hearing my music in TV shows and movies. One of the most recent ones that was awesome was my cover of Mr. Sandman was used in Behind Her Eyes on Netflix. I loved that show, so hearing my song in it was extra cool.
Future projects? Are you planning a tour when it will be possible?
Yes! I am currently recording my second full length album here in Seattle and it’s going great. I love these songs. And yes, we are planning to announce touring dates when it is totally safe to do so. It feels like we are almost there! Thank you.
