SUZI QUATRO – Intervista alla prima vera regina del rock mondiale

SUZI QUATRO nasce a Detroit il 3 giugno 1950, può sicuramente essere considerata la prima vera regina del rock mondiale e sicuramente la prima donna rockstar bass player. Ha raggiunto il no. 1 nel Regno Unito, in altri paesi europei e in Australia con i suoi singoli “Can the Can” (1973) e “Devil Gate Drive” (1974). Attrice in Happy Days nel ruolo di Leather Tuscadero, ha pubblicato quindici album in studio, dieci album di compilation e un album dal vivo. I suoi successi da solista includono “Can the Can“, “48 Crash“, “Daytona Demon“, “Devil Gate Drive” e “Your Mamma Will not Like Me“. Tra il 1973 e il 1980, ha vinto sei Bravo Ottos. Nel 2010, è stata votata nella Hall of Fame del Michigan Rock and Roll Legends.

Buongiorno mrs. Quatro, da giovani eravamo tutti innamorati di lei, ma io compravo anche le musicassette, io sono veramente felice ed onorato di poterla intervistare. Ora siamo passati allo alla musica liquida, come ha vissuto il passaggio dal supporto fisico allo streaming?
Tutti gli artisti e le case discografiche hanno dovuto far fronte a questo e cambiare con i tempi. Tutto quello che posso dire è che grazie a Dio sono sempre stata un’artista da palco, LIVE … e questo non puoi trasmetterlo in streaming!!

Tantissimi siti e critici la inseriscono nel filone del glam rock, categoria che mi pare lei abbia sempre rifiutato, in effetti io l’ho sempre vista come rock o anche punk per la forza della sua musica ed anche i completi di pelle che l’hanno sempre contraddistinta, cosa ne pensa?
Sì. Non sono mai stata glam mai… non mi truccavo per niente, o molto poco, mettevo una semplice tuta di pelle nera e degli stivali con il tacco. I ragazzi indossavano più trucco di me. Mi sono sempre basata sul rock e lo sono ancora. Penso di essere stato inserita in quella categoria perché ho iniziato ad avere hits in quel periodo, tutto lì.

A parte il Fender Bass Precision, usa anche altri modelli per suonare?
Nel corso degli anni ho suonato vari bassi, partendo da Fender Precision del 1957 che mi aveva regalato mio padre, è durato molto poco. Un violin bass, poi un Les Paul professional recording bass, nel Regno Unito il Gibson Ripper, EBO, Status headless bass, ma non mi piacevano, alla fine tornavo a Fender a cui rimango affezionata. Inoltre è stato sponsorizzato da B.C. Rich, alla fine degli anni settanta si vedevano molte foto della band con chitarre abbinate. Io mi sono sistemata con il Fender Precision per lo studio ed il Fender Jazz per il palcoscenico. Sono felice così.

45 milioni di dischi venduti, se si guarda indietro ci sarebbe qualcosa che cambierebbe?
Il numero è sbagliato. Sono a 55 milioni ora e continuano ad aumentare. Forse avrei pubblicato più singoli delle mie canzoni. Alcune erano sicuramente ottime ed adatte, ma questo non era l’accordo che avevamo con Chinn / Chapman. Sono tutte le mie canzoni che amo fino in fondo, come Mickie Most ha sempre detto, le canzoni che composto sono il cuore del mio spettacolo.

Tantissime collaborazioni come il famoso tour con Alice Cooper, cosa ricorda con particolare piacere? Un aneddoto ancora inedito?
Lo battevo sempre al black jack.

Lei ha recitato per sette puntate in Happy Days come Leather Tuscadero, una serie televisiva che è una icona immortale, che esperienza è stata? Ha cantato anche varie canzoni mai incise, tra cui ad esempio Believe, le vedremo mai registrate?
“Believe” la scrissi appositamente per un episodio, “Richie almost dies”, no … non la registrerò … il resto delle canzoni che ho fatto si trovano nel mio catalogo.

Da Detroit, motor city, all’Inghilterra, quanto ha inciso l’ambiente nella sua vita artistica?
È stato un grande cambiamento culturale da Detroit all’Inghilterra, specialmente essendoci andata da sola, partendo da una grande famiglia. Non mi ha cambiato il fatto di essere nata a Detroit, è stato semplicemente qualcosa a cui sono sopravvissuta e che  ho imparato ad amare.

Lei ha vissuto gli anni ruggenti del rock, pensa che possa essere ancora un motore di cambiamento o ha perso la sua spinta di cambiamento sociale?
Qualunque cosa succeda io non perdo la mia grinta. Non penso che i talent show siano stati salutari per il rock, NON è questo il vero talento.

Cosa le piace ascoltare al momento?
Ed Sheeran, è bravissimo, come Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sam Smith.

Progetti futuri? Un nuovo disco? La potremo ammirare in Italia dal vivo?
Sto finendo il mio nuovo album, tutte le nuove canzoni scritte e registrate con mio figlio, sono molto eccitata da tutto questo, e sì, lo vedrete in Italia.

Good morning mrs. Quatro, when we were young we were all in love with her, but I also bought tapes, I am really happy and honored to be able to interview her. Now we have moved on to liquid music, how did the transition from physical media to live streaming?
All artists and record companies have had to cope with this and change with the times.  All I can say is thank God I have always been a LIVE act… you can’t stream that!!

Many sites and critics put her in the glam rock, a category that I think she has always refused, in fact I have always seen her as rock or even punk for the strength of her music and also the leather outfits that the have always distinguished, what do you think?
Yes. Have never been glam ever… wore no make up, Or very little and a plain black leather jumpsuit …one small platform on Cuban heel boots…the boys wore more make up than me.  I have always been rock based and still am… I think I got lumped into that category because I started having hits in that period… that’s all it was.

Except for the Fender Bass Precision, do you also use other models to play?
Through the years I have played various basses, starting on a 1957 Fender Precision that my father gave me…. went to very briefly. A violin bass, then to an Les Paul professional recording bass… in the UK I player Gibson ripper, EBO, status headless, which I didn’t like, eventually getting back to Fender where I belong…also was sponsored by B. C. Rich, in the late seventies… lots of pictures of the band with matching guitars… I have settled now Fender precision for studio… Fender jazz for stage… I am happy.

The amount is wrong.  I am at 55 million now and still counting…maybe I would have released more of my own songs as singles… God knows they were certainly good enough…but this was not the arrangement we had with Chinn/Chapman…it’s my songs all the way now… which I love… as Mickie Most always said, my self penned songs are the MEAT of my show.

Many collaborations like the famous tour with Alice Cooper, what do you remember with particular pleasure? An unpublished anecdote?
Beating him at blackjack.

She starred for seven episodes in Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero, a television series that is an immortal icon, what was the experience? He also sang several songs never recorded, including Believe, we’ll never see them recorded?
Believe was written especially for one episode by me… when? “Richie’s almost dies”, no I won’t record this… the rest of the songs I did were in my recorded catalogue.

From Detroit, motor city, to England, how much did the environment affect its artistic life?
It was a big cultural change from Detroit to England, especially going alone from a big family to nothing.  It didn’t change me as I was rooted in Detroit… it was simply something I survived and learned to love.

Have you lived through the roaring years of rock, do you think that it can still be a driving force for change or has it lost its drive for social change?
I have not lost my edge, no matter what else is happening. I don’t think the talent shows have been healthy for the industry whatsoever… it is NOT how true talent is found.

What do you like to hear at the moment?
Ed Sheeran, he is great, like Adele…  ,Red Hot Chilli Peppers ,Sam Smith.

Future projects? A new record? Can we admire it in Italy live?
I am finishing my new album… all new songs written and recorded with my son, so very much TODAY… very excited about this…and yes, you will get this in Italy.
