STU LARSEN – Intervista al cantante

In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “MARIGOLD” ho intervistato il cantante STU LARSEN.

Buongiorno Stu, piacere di averti sulle pagine TuttoRock,  vieni da un piccolo paese in Australia, puoi iniziare a dirci quali sono stati i tuoi primi ascolti?
Sono cresciuto ascoltando un sacco di vecchi musicisti blues come John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Muddy Waters e tutta la troupe, è stato un modo molto bello per iniziare. 

Come è nata la decisione di iniziare una carriera musicale?
Credo che sia successo in maniera graduale e con naturalezza nel corso del tempo, mi è sempre piaciuto suonare la chitarra e cantare e alla fine è arrivato a un punto in cui ho pensato di cercare di sopravvivere trasformandolo in un lavoro, lasciando il mio lavoro in banca. Sono passati ben 13 anni da quando ho preso questa decisione e non me ne sono mai pentito finora.

Come riesci a vivere senza una residenza permanente, sempre in giro per il mondo?
È stato, e lo è tuttora, un modo incredibile di vivere, trascorrere qualche giorno qua e là, sempre in movimento, senza fermarsi mai da nessuna parte. Ho dormito in più di 130 letti diversi ogni anno da quando ho iniziato a viaggiare.

In un mondo che costruisce sempre nuove barriere non hai confini, il posto più strano dove sei stato e dove ti piacerebbe assolutamente andare?
Non credo di aver trovato nessun posto troppo strano, non ho mai davvero aspettative e sono sempre sorpreso dalle cose che scopro. Sono innamorato di tanti paesi in tutto il mondo, in tanti voglio tornarci e anche visitare tanti nuovi posti. Sono stato in circa 50 stati finora e ce ne sono molti altri da esplorare. Speriamo che tutto questo sarà possibile in futuro.

Marigold è un album molto dolce e sentimentale, hai superato la delusione dell’amore che ha ispirato questo album? Pensi che la musica possa avere questo potere di aiutare le persone quando hanno problemi?
Marigold include sia le canzoni più felici e più tristi che abbia mai scritto, è un vero e proprio mix e mostra davvero il viaggio di cadere dentro e fuori dall’amore. Ho superato quel dolore ora, sì. E amo il potere della musica, può veramente aiutarci ad attraversare momenti diversi della nostra vita. La musica è davvero potente.

In generale, dove trovi l’ispirazione per comporre le tue canzoni?
L’ispirazione viene da tutto quello che mi è di fronte. A volte questa è una relazione, o persone che incontro, o luoghi che visito. Tutto ciò che vediamo o sentiamo può finire per essere scritto in una canzone. 

Marigold è stato il primo album a cui hai partecipato come produzione, se non sbaglio, questo ha contribuito alla qualità finale?
Marigold è stato il primo album in cui sono stato coinvolto al 100%. Per Vagabond, mio padre era appena scomparso, cosa che ha reso la registrazione un poco diversa, mentre per Resolute, la mia appendice scoppiò pochi giorni prima dell’inizio della registrazione, e anche in questo caso tutto cambiò. Non credo che il mio coinvolgimento abbia necessariamente reso le cose diverse da quello che sarebbero state, a parte l’impatto di avere una terza voce nel processo decisionale. Il 75% della creatività è venuto da Tim Hart che ha contribuito tanto a questo progetto e un altro 24% è venuto dall’ingegnere Simon Berckelman dei Golden Retriever Studios a Sydney , a me è rimasto l’ultimo 1%. 

Hai partecipato al tour di Passenger, qual è stata la tua esperienza?
È sempre divertente essere in tour con Passenger. Ho avuto la fortuna di trascorrere del tempo con lui e la sua crew a partire dal 2010, ed è stato un decennio meraviglioso per farmi conoscere ai fans di tutto il mondo.

Le cose che non possono mancare nella valigia di un viaggiatore seriale come te?
Ho imparato a viaggiare molto leggero nel corso degli anni. Metà della mia valigia è piena di vestiti e cerco di avere solo un paio di scarpe. L’altra metà è fatta di cose musicali e una macchina per il caffè espresso. Poi ho la mia chitarra, uno zaino per il mio computer portatile e le telecamere. Porterò sempre con me il computer portatile e una macchina fotografica, e anche la macchina per il caffè espresso, questi sono oggetti essenziali di sicuro.

Progetti futuri? Possiamo sperare di vederti in Italia quando è possibile? Cosa ti è piaciuto di più del nostro paese?
Adoro l’Italia. Ho suonato in tanti posti incredibili lì e non vedo l’ora di tornare di nuovo per fare spettacoli e vedere alcuni amici. Ho il sogno di viaggiare in Italia per alcuni mesi e tenere piccoli spettacoli lungo tutto il percorso, spero proprio che questo possa accadere un giorno. Penso che i fans italiani siano tra i più fedeli al mondo e sento sempre tanto amore quando visito il vostro paese.

Good morning Stu, nice to have you on the TuttoRock pages, you come from a small country in Australia, can you start telling us what your first listenings were?
I grew up listening to a lot of old blues musicians like John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Muddy Waters and that whole crew, it was a very cool place to start.

How did the decision to start a musical career come about?
I guess it happened pretty naturally and gradually over time, I always enjoyed playing guitar and singing and it eventually got to a point where I thought I should try to survive from this and leave my job at the bank. It’s been been 13 years since I made this decision and I think it’s working out okay so far.

How do you live without a permanent residence, always around the world?
It’s been an incredible way to do life, spending a few days here and there, always moving and never settling anywhere. I have slept in more than 130 different beds each year since I started travelling. 

In a world that always builds new barriers you have no boundaries, the strangest place where you have been and where you absolutely want to go?
I don’t think I have found anywhere too strange, I never really have expectations and am always surprised by the things in front of me. I am in love with so many countries around the world and want to go back to so many places and also visit so many new places. I have been to about 50 countries now and there are many more to explore. Hopefully this will be possible in the future. 

Marigold is a very sweet and sentimental album, have you overcome the disappointment of love that inspired this album? Do you think that music can have this power to help people when they have problems?
Marigold includes both the happiest and saddest songs I have ever written, it’s a real mix and really shows the journey of falling in and out of love. I have moved on from that heartache now, yes. And I love the power of music, to help us through different times in our lives. Music really is powerful. 

In general where do you find the inspiration to compose your songs?
Inspiration comes from everything in front of me. Sometimes that is a relationship, or people I meet, or places I visit. Anything we see or feel can end up being written into a song.

Was Marigold the first album in which you participated in the production, if I’m not mistaken, did this contribute to the final quality?
Marigold was the first album I was 100% involved in yes. For Vagabond, my father had just passed away which made the recording a little different and for Resolute, my appendix burst just days before recording started which also changed the way in which we moved forward. I don’t think my involvement necessarily made things different to what they would have been, other than the impact of having a third voice in the decision making process. 75% of the creativity came from Tim Hart who gave so much to this project and another 24% came from engineer Simon Berckelman at Golden Retriever Studios in Sydney and I chipped in with the last 1%.

You participated in the Passenger tour, what was your experience?
It’s always fun to be on tour with Passenger. I’ve been lucky to spend time with him and his crew on and off since 2010 and it’s been a wonderful decade of being introduced to fans all around the world.

The things that cannot be missing in the suitcase of a serial traveler like you?
I have learned to travel very light over the years. Half of my suitcase is filled with clothes and I try to have just one pair of shoes. The other half has music things and an aeropress for coffee. Then I have my guitar and a backpack for my laptop and cameras. I will always take my laptop and a camera with me and also the aeropress too, these are essentials for sure.

Future projects? Can we hope to see you in Italy when it is possible? What did you like most about our country?
I adore Italy. I have played in so many amazing places there and I can’t wait to come back again and play some shows and see some people. I have a dream to travel around Italy for a few months and just play little shows all along the way, hopefully I can make this happen some day. I think Italian fans are some of the most loyal in the world and I always feel so much love when I visit.
