SPIRITS OF FIRE – Intervista al chitarrista e fondatore Chris Caffery
Gli Spirits Of Fire sono la nuova creatura di Chris Caffery, chitarrista dei Savatage e dei Trans-Siberian Orchestra. “Embrace The Unknown” (leggi qui la recensione) è il secondo album ma alla voce non c’è più Tim “Ripper” Owens, ma Fabio Lione. Ne ho parlato con Chris Caffery e nell’intervista trapela anche una sorpresa che riguarda i Savatage.
Ciao Chirs, benvenuto su Tuttorock. Parlami del secondo album dei tuoi Spirits Of Fire, “Embrace The Unknown”, come nascono i vari brani?
Ciao e grazie per avermi ospitato, è bello parlare di questo nuovo disco. Le canzoni sono nate fondamentalmente da me che ho scritto la musica e da Fabio Lione che ha scritto testi e le melodie. Ho deciso che su questo disco volevo concentrarmi solo sulla scrittura di alcune canzoni heavy metal davvero solide e non dover avere tutto il lavoro su ogni canzone come alcune di quelle dell’ultimo disco. Per me era come se stessi scrivendo un altro disco da solista mentre scrivevo ogni pezzo delle canzoni. Fabio ha fatto un ottimo lavoro scrivendo i testi e la melodia e sono molto contento di come è uscito il disco.
Quali sono le principali differenze rispetto al primo album secondo te?
Oltre all’ovvio fatto che abbiamo un nuovo cantante in questo disco, molte delle differenze principali sono ciò che ho appena detto il fatto che Fabio stesse scrivendo tutti i testi e le melodie ed è stato per me più uno sforzo completo della band rispetto all’ultimo. Abbiamo anche avuto più tempo per lavorare su questo individualmente a causa della pandemia, quindi tutti si sono davvero impegnati molto e penso solo che nel complesso il disco sia uscito molto più forte. Avevo anche registrato le mie chitarre prima della batteria nell’ultimo disco e qui le ho registrate con la batteria finale. Questo mi ha dato l’opportunità di concentrarmi davvero sulle prove con la batteria prima di registrare le mie chitarre e di cambiare alcuni dei ritmi intorno. Penso che questo disco suoni più come una vera band. Steve Di Giorgio ha avuto l’opportunità di mettere la sua base su alcune tracce di chitarra e batteria davvero solide che sono state messe insieme molto più forti e penso che nel complesso ciò abbia semplicemente reso la musica completa e molto più solida.
Come hai contattato Fabio Lione, un cantante molto diverso da Tim “Ripper” Owens?
La Frontiers Records in realtà ha avuto l’idea di provare Fabio e lui ha fatto un ottimo lavoro nell’essere il cantante degli Spirits Of Fire. È entrato in una personalità heavy metal e la sua ha creato parti vocali che nessuno aveva mai sentito da lui e penso che sia stato fantastico. lavoro a quello.
Perché Tim “Ripper” Owens ha lasciato la band?
Questa domanda la dovresti fare a Tim. So che ha parlato con la Frontiers di un secondo disco e qualcosa non è stato concordato, quindi si è separato dalla Frontiers. Mi è stato chiesto se volevo ancora fare un altro disco e ho detto di sì e siamo andati avanti senza di lui.
Frontiers Reords, Fabio Lione e Aldo Lonobile alla produzione, c’è un po’ di Italia in te ultimamente?
Adoro tutto questo! Molte persone non sanno che Caffery è il cognome del mio patrigno. Il mio vero padre era italiano e i suoi antenati erano napoletani. Quindi non l’ho mai conosciuto davvero ma sono più italiano che irlandese!!!
Effettivamente questa è una vera sorpresa, non lo sapevo!! Pensavo che eri statunitense al 100%!! Una sezione ritmica incredibile, Steve Di Giorgio e Mark Zonder, quanto hanno arricchito le canzoni?
Hanno contribuiti moltissimo, come già ti ho detto ho registrato le chitarre sulla batteria di Mark questa volta. Ha uno stile molto distinto. Mi sono adagiato sulle sue parti in questo disco e mi sono davvero bloccato nei ritmi e nei riempimenti. Questo è il modo in cui mi piace fare tutti i miei dischi. E’ il primo disco registrato con le mie chitarre su una traccia di clic e loop di batteria demo. Penso che questo abbia fatto una grande differenza e quando Steve ha messo il suo basso sopra questa piastrella aveva una base più forte su cui aggiungere. Il suo basso di è sempre incredibile ma in questo disco brilla davvero!
Anche Fabio Lione ha portato anche idee nuove per le canzoni?
Sì, come ho detto, la maggior parte dei testi e delle melodie sono sue. Ha anche registrato le tracce vocali e ho lavorato con lui su alcune cose, ma Fábio è stato una parte importante nella scrittura di questo disco.
Qual è il messaggio dei testi dei vari brani?
Come la domanda su Ripper, penso che sia meglio chiedere ha Fabio le risposte esatte, ma ho una risposta migliore! Nel primo disco ho scritto intere canzoni. Qui non l’ho fatto!
In “Out Of The Rain” si riassapora il sound dei Savatage, una cosa voluta o è stato spontaneo?
Volevo questa canzone nel disco. Quello stile di scrittura e il tipo di canzone sono così importanti nella mia storia di musicista. Sono andato dal mio amico Lonnie Park e abbiamo scritto la musica insieme. È una bellissima canzone e una conclusione perfetta per questo disco. I fan di Savatage infatti l’adoreranno! Beh, almeno spero che lo faranno!
Sicuramente, te lo garantisco! Adesso una domanda che tutti ti avranno fatto e che non posso fare a meno di farti, una domanda che viene dal cuore di tanti fan e visto che abbiamo parlato di Savatage!! Si parla di un ritorno dei Savatage, è vero e puoi anticipare qualcosa?
Tutto quello che posso dire è che stiamo scrivendo musica per la prima volta da molto tempo, in particolare pensando a un disco dei Savatage, sia con Jon Oliva che con Al Pitrelli. Che accada o meno, terrò le dita incrociate come tutti voi! Ma io, Jon e Al abbiamo scritto molte cose.
Una bellissima notizia!! Vedremo nel frattempo gli Spirits Of Fire dal vivo?
Mi piacerebbe fare alcuni spettacoli. Stiamo esaminando le possibilità ora. Speriamo di poter salire sul palco in un prossimo futuro. Sarebbe uno spettacolo divertente soprattutto se tutti noi potessimo aggiungere una canzone dai nostri cataloghi personali al di fuori degli Spirits Of Fire!

Hi Chirs, welcome to Tuttorock. Tell me about the second album of your Spirits Of Fire, “Embrace The Unknown”, how are the various songs born?
Hello and thank you for having me it’s great to be talking about this new record. The songs were born basically by me writing music and Fábio writing lyrics and melodies. I decided on this record I wanted to focus on just writing some really solid heavy-metal songs and not have to have all of the work on each song like some of the ones on the last record. For me it felt like I was just writing another solo record when I was writing every piece of the songs. Fabio did a great job writing the lyrics and melody is and I’m very happy with the way the record came out.
What are the main differences compared to the first album?
Well besides the obvious the fact that we do have a new singer on this record a lot of the main differences are what I just said the fact that Fabio was writing all of the lyrics and melody‘s and it was to me more of a complete band effort than the last one. We also had more time to work on this one individually because of the pandemic so everybody really put in a lot of effort and I just think overall the record came out a lot stronger. I had also recorded my guitars before the drums on the last record this record I recorded them with the final drums. This gave me the opportunity to really focus on rehearsing with the drums before I recorded my guitars and I change some of the rhythms around. I think it makes this record sound more like a rehearsed band and the last one. Steve had the opportunity to put his base on top of some really solid guitar and drum tracks that were placed together a lot stronger and I think overall that just made the complete music a lot more solid.
How did you contact Fabio Lione, a singer very different from Tim Owens?
Frontiers actually have the idea of trying Fabio and he did an amazing job at being the singer of spirits of fire. He went into a heavy metal personality and his voice that a lot of people had never heard and I think he did an awesome. job at that.
Why did Owens leave the band?
This question you will have to ask Tim. I know he spoke to Frontiers about a second record and something was not agreed upon, so he had parted ways with Frontiers. I was asked if I still wanted to do another record and I said yes and we moved forward without him.
Frontiers Reords, Fabio Lione and Aldo Lonobile is in the production, is there a bit of Italy in you lately?
I love it! A lot of people do not know that Caffery is my step Dads last name. My real father was Italian and his ancestors were from Napoli. So I never really knew him but I’m more Italian than Irish!!!
An incredible rhythm section, Steve Di Giorgio and Mark Zonder, how much did they enrich the songs?
I told you in the one answer how I recorded my final guitars to Marks drums this time. He has a very distinct style. I married his parts personally this record and really locked into the beats and fills. This is how I like to do all my records. The first record I just recorded my guitars to a click track and demo drum loops. I think this made a big difference and when Steve put his bass on top this tile he had a stronger base to add onto. His bass is so incredible always but on this record it really shines!
Did Fabio Lione also bring ideas for the songs?
Yes like I said most of the lyrics and melodies were his. Also recorded the vocal tracks and worked with him on some things but Fábio was a huge part of the writing of this record.
What is the message of the lyrics of the various pieces?
Like the question about Ripper I think it’s better to ask Fábio for the exact answers. I want to have him write this answer out for me so I can explain it perfectly but he has a better answer to that! The first record I wrote entire songs. This one I didn’t!
In “Out Of The Rain” yes and who of Savatage was wanted and naturally everything was born?
I wanted this song on the record. That style of writing and type of song is so important in my history as a musician. I went to my friend Lonnie Park and we wrote the music together. It’s a beautiful song and a perfect end to this record. Savatage fans will love this! Well, at least I hope they will!
Now a question that everyone will have asked you and that I can’t help but ask you, a question that comes from the hearts of many fans. There is talk of a Savatage return, is it true and can you anticipate something?
All I can say is we are writing music for the first time in a long time that is specifically with a Savatage record in mind. Whether or not that happens I will keep my fingers crossed like all of you! But myself, Jon and Al we have been writing.
Will We See the Spirits Of Fire in concert?
I would love to do some shows. We are looking at the possibilities now. Hopefully we can hit the stage sometime in the near future. It would be a fun show especially if we all could add in a song from our personal catalogs outside of Spirits!
