SPACE OF VARIATIONS – Intervista alla metalcore band ucraina
In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “Imago”, prevista per venerdì 23 settembre su etichetta Napalm Records, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare la band metalcore ucraina Space of Variations.
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti sulle pagine di Tuttorock, parliamo del vostro LP, “Imago”, che uscirà il 23 settembre, quando avete scritto le canzoni?
Non posso dirlo con certezza ma l’intera scrittura dell’album ha richiesto circa 1,5 / 2 anni. La data di uscita è stata più volte posticipata a causa delle restrizioni dovute al covid e della guerra. E il 23 siamo finalmente pronti per mostrarlo al mondo.
Mi è piaciuto molto l’intero album dall’inizio alla fine, se dovessi scegliere una canzone direi “OCEAN OF MADNESS”. Se provaste a trasformarvi in fan degli Space Of Variations per un momento, quale canzone sarebbe la vostra preferita?
Penso che le mie canzoni preferite dell’album siano “vein.mp3” e “SOMEONE ELSE”, ma è molto difficile scegliere. Significano tutte molto per me.
Come nasce una vostra canzone e come si sviluppa di solito?
Le canzoni di solito iniziano da un riff o da un synth, poi ci lavoriamo con la band e aggiungiamo la voce nell’ultima fase.
Nel disco ci sono due ospiti, Denis Stoff e Alyona Alyona, come mai avete chiamato loro?
Perché sono nostri amici ed entrambi musicisti ucraini di grande talento. È stata una bella esperienza lavorare con loro ed è stato qualcosa di nuovo per noi come band.
Parlatemi un po’ della copertina dell’album, di chi è stata l’idea e chi l’ha creata?
Il nostro chitarrista/cantante Alex l’ha creata. Lui è anche un pittore. Questo è proprio il suo corpo sulla copertina, riflette molto bene l’atmosfera dell’album.
Nelle vostre canzoni possiamo sentire molte influenze, questo dipende dal fatto che ascoltate la musica nella sua totalità?
Sì. Amiamo generi musicali diversi, vibrazioni diverse e siamo super aperti agli esperimenti. Per noi è noioso creare qualcosa di regolare.
Per chi non vi conoscesse, come vi siete incontrati e quando avete pensato di formare gli Space Of Variations?
La nostra storia inizia nel 2009. Ci siamo incontrati in uno dei nostri studi locali e abbiamo deciso di fondare una band. Poi ci siamo lasciati nel 2010 e siamo tornati solo nel 2014/2015 fino ad ora.
Sfortunatamente, tutti sono a conoscenza della situazione in Ucraina, come la state vivendo personalmente?
Questo è il periodo più difficile della nostra vita. Ogni giorno milioni di ucraini soffrono per questa orribile guerra. State con l’Ucraina, ne abbiamo tanto bisogno. È una questione di sopravvivenza.
Farete un tour europeo che arriverà anche in Italia per una data a Vicenza il 2 ottobre, che tipo di spettacolo devono aspettarsi i vostri fan?
Uno show super energico con tanto sudore.
Grazie mille per il vostro tempo, volete aggiungere qualcosa per chiudere questa intervista?
Tutto quello che voglio dire alle persone che ci leggeranno è questo, provate solamente ad essere la versione migliore di voi stessi. È difficile ed eterno, ma dobbiamo cercare di essere migliori.

On the occasion of the release of the new album “Imago”, scheduled for Friday 23 September on Napalm Records label, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Ukrainian metalcore band Space of Variations.
Hi guys, welcome to the pages of Tuttorock, let’s talk now about your LP, “Imago”, which will be released on September 23rd, when did you write the songs?
I can’t say for sure but the entire writing of the album took about 1.5 / 2 years. The release date was postponed several times due to covid restrictions and war. And 23rd we’re finally ready to show it to the world.
I really enjoyed the whole album from start to finish, if I had to choose a song I would say “OCEAN OF MADNESS”. If you try to turn into Space Of Variations fans for a moment, which song is your favorite?
I think my favorite songs from the album are “vein.mp3” and “SOMEONE ELSE” but it is very difficult to choose. They all mean a lot to me.
How is a your song born and how does it usually developed?
The songs usually begins from a riff or synths then we work on it with the band and add vocals on the last phase.
On the record there are two guests, Denis Stoff and Alyona Alyona, why did you call them?
Because they’re our friends and both super talented musicians from Ukraine. It was a cool experience to work with them and something new for us as a band.
Tell me a little about the album cover, whose idea was and who created it?
Our guitarist/vocalist Alex did it. He is a painter also. This is actually his body right on the cover. It reflect the vibe of the album so good.
In your songs we can hear many influences, does this depend on the fact that you listen to the music in its totality?
Yeah. We love different genres of music, different vibes and we’re super opened to experiments. For us it’s boring to create something regular.
For those who don’t know you, how did you meet and when did you think about forming Space Of Variations?
Our story begins from 2009. We met with guys on one of our local studio and decided to start a band. Than we broke up in 2010 and came back only in 2014/2015 and till now.
Unfortunately, everyone is aware of the situation in Ukraine, how are you personally experiencing it?
This is the most difficult period in our lifes. Every day millions of Ukrainians are suffering from this horrible war. Stand with Ukraine. We need it so much. It’s a question of survival.
You will be doing a European tour that will also arrive in Italy for a date in Vicenza on October 2nd, what kind of show should your fans expect?
A super energetic sweaty show.

All I want to say to people will read it, just try be the better version of yourself. It’s hard and eternal. But we need to try be better.
