SEVENTH WONDER – Intervista al bassista Andreas Blomqvist

“The Testament” è il nuovo album dei progmetallers svedesi Seventh Wonder, ne ho parlato su queste pagine (leggi qui la recensione), è un album di progressive metal articolato e tecnico ma con aperture melodiche dal grande fascino. Il bassista Andreas Blomqvist ci conduce nel loro universo in questa mia intervista.

Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Il nuovo album “The Testament” è appena uscito, appena le registrazioni sono terminate e dopo aver ascoltato di nuovo, quali sono state le tue impressioni?
Sai, in realtà sono abbastanza felice! È una cosa divertente, quando nel processo di creazione di un album non sai mai davvero come sarà, finché non c’è stata una certa distanza tra te e l’album. Bene, ora è così, e mi piace quello che sto ascoltando.

Da quello che ho capito questa volta non è un concept album, c’è una storia che unisce tutto ma le varie canzoni hanno le loro storie, è così?
Nessun concept album questa volta. Quindi non c’è una trama che attraversa l’album e nemmeno le canzoni dipendono l’una dall’altra. Ogni canzone è una cosa a sé, anche se c’è un tema comune a tutti i testi.

Allora parlami del significato dei testi e del titolo, perché “The Testament”?
Sì, quindi abbiamo deciso di abbinare ogni canzone a un’emozione umana di base, come l’amore, la rabbia, la paura, ecc. Poi, una volta che a ogni canzone è stata data un’emozione, io e Tommy abbiamo scritto il testo in circa una settimana. È stato un grande sforzo di collaborazione. Per quanto riguarda il titolo, beh, alla fine della giornata quando lasci questo mondo, quello che resta di te più di ogni altra cosa è l’impressione che hai fatto ad altre persone attraverso le tue azioni, governate dalle tue emozioni. Quindi la somma di tutto ciò è ciò che lasci alle spalle, come la tua eredità o, se vuoi, il tuo Testamento.

Quale sarà il testamento dei Seventh Wonder?
Oooh, domanda interessante… Non sono sicuro di essere la persona giusta per rispondere, credo che spetterà a tutti gli altri… Ma ovviamente per me personalmente, la cosa più bella che mi viene in mente è di essere stato qualcuno che è stato capace di creare qualcosa che ha davvero parlato con qualcuno là fuori, che per un certo periodo è stata la colonna sonora di quella persona, capisci? Quello dovrebbe essere bello. Per aver ispirato e toccato profondamente le persone, spero che questo sarà il nostro Testamento.

Le differenze rispetto ai tuoi album precedenti?
Impossibile per me dirlo… Almeno non c’è alcuna intenzione specifica di prenderlo in un modo specifico. Nel bene e nel male, suoniamo come facciamo. Ogni volta che scriviamo un album finisce per suonare come fa. La differenza più grande è probabilmente che questa volta non si tratta di un concept album e che ogni canzone parla da sé. Ora che è passato del tempo da quando l’abbiamo registrato, sto gradualmente iniziando ad essere in grado di ascoltarlo un po’ più obiettivamente, e forse le canzoni sono un po’ più dirette questa volta. Non sono sicuro però…. Così difficile da dire. Ho lasciato che i fan lo decidessero!

Ascoltando le canzoni mi sembra che alcune melodie rimandano all’AOR, seppur nel suono del progressive metal! È solo una mia impressione?
Hm, immagino che dal punto di vista melodico avremo sempre quell’approccio melodico anni ’80, o anche pop, e lo adoro davvero. Ma forse anche da quando Stefan ha scritto sempre di più per la band, siamo diventati un po’ più pesanti nella musica. Così difficile rispondere, ma se è così che senti sono sicuro che c’è del vero in questo.

Ogni vostra canzone lascia molto spazio a tutti gli strumenti, voce inclusa, come dividete le parti da usare e come arrangiat il tutto?
Wow, non è una domanda facile a cui rispondere… Uno dei motivi per cui ci mettiamo così tanto a pubblicare musica è che passiamo ore e ore ad arrangiare tutto. Credo anche che, invecchiando, abbiamo migliorato la nostra capacità di lasciare spazio agli strumenti. Quando eravamo più giovani, tutti gli strumenti facevano di tutto, sai come il 110% tutto il dannato tempo, e ora possiamo renderci conto che, oh, c’è troppo da fare qui, uno di noi ha bisogno di ridimensionarsi un po’. Ma sì, dedichiamo molto tempo agli arrangiamenti.

Definisci i Seventh Wonder come una band progressive metal?
Sì, immagino che sia lì che ci adatteremmo di più. Non è prog rock, che per me è più simile a Rush o Neal Morse o Flower Kings ecc., ma allo stesso tempo non siamo davvero molto metal a volte. Forse hard rock progressivo melodico… ahah, non lo so, ma sì, immagino che per risparmiare tempo ci etichettiamo come progressive metal, almeno era quello che volevamo fare quando abbiamo iniziato, sai!

Quando è nata la storia dei Seventh Wonder, a quali band ti sei ispirato e a quali tra quelle di oggi?
Stavo già suonando con Johan e Johnny in una band power metal, quindi eravamo già un po’ insieme quando abbiamo deciso di formare questa band. A quel punto direi che Dream Theater e Symphony X erano le band che tutti amavamo davvero e da cui ci siamo ispirati di più. Ma ovviamente tutti amano una vasta gamma di band e non posso elencare le influenze di tutti gli altri. Negli anni successivi sono stato più ispirato da Neal Morse, Pink Floyd e come più roba rock, immagino, ma a dire il vero penso ancora di essere bloccato più o meno dove ero quando abbiamo iniziato in termini di ispirazione musicale, anche se mi ritrovo ad ascoltare musica diversa in questi giorni.

Dopo lo stop forzato dovuto alla pandemia, siete pronti per tornare a suonare dal vivo?
Sì, lo siamo assolutamente! Abbiamo usato il tempo della pandemia per creare The Testament, e ora siamo pronti a portarlo in viaggio.

Quale sarà il futuro dei Seventh Wonder”?
Durante l’autunno andremo a suonare il più possibile. Dopodiché si torna alla macchina per scrivere un nuovo album.

Non vedo l’ora di tornare in Italia, la nostra casa è lontana. In nessun altro paese ha suonato tanto quanto l’Italia, quindi siamo tutti super entusiasti di tornare lì!

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. The new album “The Testament” has just been released, as soon as the recordings are finished and after listening again, what were your impressions?
You know, I am actually pretty happy! It is funny thing, when in the process of making an album you never really know what it will be like, until there’s been som distance between yourself and the album. Well now it has, and I like what I am hearing.

From what I understand this time it is not a concept album, there is a story that unites everything but the various songs have their own stories, is that so?
No concept album this time. So there is no storyline going through the album and the songs aren’t dependant upon each other either. Every song is its own thing, although there is a common theme to all the lyrics.

So tell me about the meaning of the texts and the title, why “The Testament”?
Yeah, so we decided to try to match each song with a basic human emotion, like love, anger, fear etc. Then once each song had been given an emotion, me and Tommy wrote the lyrics in about a week. It was a great collaborative effort. As for the title, well, at the end of the day when you leave this world, what is left of you more than enything else is the impression you made on other people through your actions, governed by your emotions. So the sum of all that is what you leave behind, like your legacy or, if you will, your Testament.

What will be the testament of the Seventh Wonder?
Oooh, interesting question… I am not sure I am the right person to answer it though, I guess that will be up to everyone else… But of course for me personally, the most beautiful thing I can think of is to have been a aprt of creating something that really has spoken to somebody out there, that for some period in time was that person’s soundtrack, you know? That would be cool. To have inspired and touched people profoundly, I guess I hope that will be our Testament.

The differences compared to your previous albums?
Impossible for me to say… At least there is no specific intention to take it in any specific way. For better or for worse, we sound the way we do. Whenever we write it just kinda ends up sounding like it does. The biggest difference is probably that it is not a concept album this time around and that every song speaks for itself. Now that there has been some time since we recorded it I am gradually starting to be able to listen to it a bit more objectively, and maybe the songs are a little bit more straightforward this time. Not sure though…. So hard to tell. I let the fans decide that one!

Listening to the songs it seems to me that some melodies remain on the AOR, albeit in the sound of progressive metal! Is it just my impression?
Hm, I guess melody wise we will always have that melodic 80s, or even pop-like approach and I really love it. But maybe also since Stefan has been writing more and more for the band we have gotten a little bit heavier in the music. SO difficult to answer, but if that is how you feel I am sure there is some truth to that.

Each of your songs leaves a lot of space for your instruments, voice included, how do you divide the parts to be used and how do you each arrange everything?
Wow, that is not an easy question to answer… One of the reasons it takes us so long to release music is that we spend countless hours arranging everything. I also believe that as we have gotten older we have improved our ability to leave room for the instruments. When we were younger all instruments did everything, you know like 110% all the damn time, and now we can realize like, oh, there is too much going on here, one of us needs to scale back a bit. But yeah, we do spend a lot of time on the arrangements.

Do you define yourself as a progressive metal band?
Yes, I guess that is where we would fit in the most. It is not prog rock, which to me is more like Rush or Neal Morse or Flower Kings etc, but at the same time we are really not very metal at times. Maybe melodic progressive hard rock… haha, I don’t know, but yeah I guess to save time we label ourselves as progressive metal, at least that is what we wanted to do when we started out, you know

When the story of Seventh Wonder was born, which bands were you inspired by and which are you inspired by today?
I was already playing with Johan and Johnny in a power metal band, so we were kind of already together when we decided to form this band. At that point I would say that Dream Theater and Symphony X were the bands that we all really loved and what we were the most inspired by. But everybody of course loves a wide array of bands and I can’t list everybody else’s influences. In later years I have been more inspired by Neal Morse, Pink Floyd and like more rock-stuff I guess, but to tell you truth I still think I am stuck pretty much where I was when we started out in terms of muical inspiration, even though I find myself listening to different music these days.

After the forced stop due to the pandemic, are you ready to go back to playing live?
Yes we absolutely are! We used th pandemic time to create The Testament, and now we are ready to take it on the road.

What will be the future of the Seventh Wonder “?
During the fall we will go out an play as much as we can. After that it is back to the grind stone to write a new album.
