ROSA NOCTURNA – Intervista al bassista David Koudela

Arrivano dalle Repubblica Ceca i Rosa Nocturna e hanno più di dieci anni di attività alle spalle e quattrop album. L’ultimo album è uscito lo scorso anno e il prossimo è previsto per il 2022. Ciò che segue è il resoconto dell’intervista con il bassista David Koudela.

Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Presenta la band ai nostri lettori, come nascono i Rosa Nocturna?
Ciao Tuttorock, siamo i Rosa Nocturna, una band symphonic-power metal di Brno, Repubblica Ceca. Le nostre canzoni enfatizzano voci interessanti, ricche orchestrazioni sinfoniche e forti riff di chitarra. I testi raccontano storie accattivanti, ballate romantiche o epiche e mitiche. La band è attualmente composta da 7 membri: Tonda Buček, chitarrista, compositore e manager, Petr Vosynek, chitarrista e cantante growl, David Koudela, bassista, Dan Havránek, batterista, Anet Vyskočilová, cantante, Viktorie Surmová, cantante, Mathias Novak, cantante. Finora abbiamo prodotto 4 album in studio e 4 singoli. Abbiamo anche pubblicato alcuni video sul nostro canale YouTube. La band è nata in un college universitario. All’inizio, era un progetto di copertina che si esibiva solo per gli amici. Le prime canzoni sono state realizzate nel 2009 e il primo album è stato pubblicato nel 2010.

Come è nata l’idea del nome Rosa Nocturna?
In realtà nessuno ricorda l’idea di origine del nome. Per quanto ne sappiamo il nome doveva essere qualcosa di misterioso, qualcosa di bello ma anche qualcosa di pericoloso in quanto può ferire. Penso che in qualche modo si rifletta nella nostra musica.

Il vostro sound è molto orchestrale, ma ha anche riff di chitarra duri e pesanti. Come lo definisci tu il sound dei Rosa Nocturna?
Sì, è corretto. Rosa Nocturna enfatizza voci interessanti, ricche orchestrazioni sinfoniche e forti riff di chitarra nelle canzoni. Suoniamo principalmente symphonic metal, ma puoi anche identificare altri sottogeneri come power metal, folk metal e thrash metal. Poiché il nostro stile principale è il metal sinfonico, il nostro sound è basato su voci femminili. Grazie a loro, suona più morbido.

Il significato dei tuoi testi?
I testi raccontano storie accattivanti, ballate romantiche o epiche e mitiche. Ti porteranno ai vecchi tempi, raccontando storie e miti dimenticati. Insieme a strumenti insoliti, come arpa, dulcimer, flauti cinesi, portiamo un’antica atmosfera del Medioevo. I testi cercano di trasmettere l’atmosfera positiva e invitano gli ascoltatori a contemplare. Di solito sono in lingua ceca, ma alcuni sono in inglese. Pubblicheremo più canzoni in inglese in seguito.

Nella vostra discografia ci sono quattro album, le differenze tra loro?
Il primo album “V tmách (In The Dark)” (2010) è una raccolta delle prime canzoni registrate in uno studio professionale. È un tipico esempio di genere symphonic metal. Il sintetizzatore è lo strumento dominante qui. Il titolo dell’album cerca di catturare l’atmosfera cupa della musica e dei testi. Il secondo album “Zapomenuté Příběhy (Forgotten Tales) (2016) contiene sette nuove canzoni. Questo album è più sinfonico e più melodico del precedente. I testi descrivono tempi e miti antichi, come risulta evidente anche dal nome e dalla copertina dell’album. Il terzo album Za Hradbami času (Behind The Wall Of Time) (2017) onora la direzione esistente verso il metal melodico sinfonico. Porta nuovi elementi e, a volte, entra in altri generi, specialmente nel folk-metal. L’album racconta storie di tempi antichi, a volte nostalgici, a volte pieni di lotte. Racconta di amore e tradimento, morte e paura, e porta una vasta gamma di stati d’animo e sentimenti, abilmente espressi da molti strumenti ed effetti sonori originali. Il quarto album “Andělé a Bestie (Angels And Beasts)” (2020) è di nuovo nello spirito del symphonic-metal. Conserva la ricchezza melodica e la diversità strumentale. Di recente, porta elementi power metal più semplici. Oltre ai membri della band, l’album è stato registrato da 21 musicisti e cantanti, quindi il numero di ospiti è aumentato rispetto all’ultimo album.

State scrivendo nuove canzoni per un prossimo album? Quando è prevista l’uscita?
Bene, in questo momento ci concentriamo maggiormente sugli spettacoli dal vivo poiché finalmente ci è permesso di farli a causa della buona situazione covid. Quest’anno abbiamo pubblicato un video di blocco, un concerto di blocco, un videoclip epico Of love, of war, of blood, un lyric video Touhy v mlze e infine un video ricodificato dal nostro spettacolo dal vivo. Ma non dormiamo e abbiamo già alcune idee e riff di base per il prossimo album. La domanda è quando li finiremo. Immagino che potrebbe uscire alla fine del 2022 o durante il 2023.

Puoi anticipare qualcosa? Quale sarà la sua direzione musicale?
Sì, certo. Nei prossimi mesi pubblicheremo un nuovo album completamente in inglese. Questa è solo una riedizione di Angels And Beasts. L’anno prossimo, vorremmo girare un nuovo video epico simile a Of love, of war, of blood. Sarà realizzato in esterno con attori, quindi non vediamo l’ora di realizzarlo. Per quanto riguarda le direzioni musicali, cerchiamo sempre di creare qualcosa di originale nel nostro stile. Qualcuno ha detto che dovrebbero esserci delle parti di violoncello lì. Vedremo.

Una formazione di sette elementi di cui tre cantanti. Molto impegnativo bilanciare il tutto?
Ahah. Sì. È difficile mettersi d’accordo su qualcosa perché ognuno ha un punto di vista leggermente diverso. Tutti possono contribuire al risultato finale. Infatti il contributo è molto apprezzato nella nostra band. Fortunatamente, amiamo ciò che facciamo e alla fine siamo in grado di prendere una decisione. Come hai detto, abbiamo tre cantanti. Di solito, solo due di loro cantano in un particolare spettacolo. Pertanto, abbiamo tre combinazioni di cantanti. Li scambiamo e non si sa mai quale si esibirà nel prossimo spettacolo.

Avete in programma anche un tour?
Sì, abbiamo programmato un piccolo tour alla fine di quest’anno. Suoneremo in diversi club della Repubblica Ceca. Insieme a noi suoneranno i Donor e i Rebel band. Questi ragazzi sono simpatici e ci piace andare in tournée con loro.

Le vostre influenze musicali?
Nightwish, Epica, Avantasia, Edguy e in genere anche quelli che si possono definire dei classici del power metal sinfonico. Ma aggiungo sempre che non vogliamo essere molto ispirati, perché non vogliamo copiare nessuno. Vogliamo andare per la nostra strada, in qualche modo ci adattiamo sempre al genere di queste band.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. Introduce yourself to our readers, how are Rosa Nocturna born?
Hi Tuttorock, we are Rosa Nocturna, a symphonic-power metal band from Brno, Czech Republic.
Our songs emphasize interesting vocals, rich symphonic orchestrations and strong guitar riffs. Lyrics tell captivating stories, romantic ballads or mythical epics. The bang currently consists of 7 members: Tonda Buček, guitarist, composer and manager, Petr Vosynek, guitarist and growl singer, David Koudela, bass guitarist, Dan Havránek, drummer, Anet Vyskočilová, singer, Viktorie Surmová, singer, Mathias Novak, singer. So far, we have produced 4 studio albums and 4 singles. We have also released a few videos on our YouTube channel. The band has been found at a university collage. At the beginning, it was a cover project performing just for friends. The first own songs were made in 2009 and the first album was released in 2010.

How did the idea of the name Rosa Nocturna come about?
Actually no one remembers the origin idea of the name. As far as we know the name was meant to be something mysterious, something beautiful but also something dangerous as it can hurt. I think it is somehow reflected in our music.

Your sound is very orchestral, but it also has hard heavy guitar riffs. Are you defined your sound?
Yes, that’s correct. Rosa Nocturna emphasizes interesting vocals, rich symphonic orchestrations, and strong guitar riffs in the songs. We primarily play symphonic metal, but you can also identify other subgenres like power metal, folk metal, and thrash metal. As our primary style is symphonic metal, our sound is based on female vocals. Thanks to them, it sounds softer.

The meaning of your lyrics?
The lyrics tell captivating stories, romantic ballads, or mythical epics. They will take you to the old times, describing forgotten stories and myths. Together with unusual instruments, like harp, dulcimer, Chinese flutes we bring an ancient atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The lyrics try to convey the positive vibe and invite listeners to contemplate. They are usually in Czech language but some of them are in English. We are going to publish more songs in English later on.

In your discography there are four albums, the differences between them?
First album V tmách (In the dark) (2010) is a collection of the first songs recorded in a professional studio. It is a typical example of symphonic metal genre. Synthesizer is the dominant instrument here. The album’s title tries to capture the gloomy mood of music and lyrics. Second album Zapomenuté příběhy (Forgotten tales) (2016) contains seven new songs. This album is more symphonic and more melodic than the previous one. Lyrics depict ancient times and myths, which is apparent even from the album name and cover. Third album Za hradbami času (Behind the walls of time) (2017) honors the existing direction to the melodic symphonic metal. It brings new elements, and sometimes gets into other genres, especially folk-metal. The album tells stories from ancient times, which are sometimes nostalgic, sometimes full of struggles. It narrates about love and betrayal, death and fear, and it brings a great range of moods and feelings, skillfully expressed by many instruments and original sound effects. Fourth album Andělé a bestie (Angels and beasts) (2020) is again in the spirit of symphonic-metal. It preserves melodic richness and instrumental diversity. Newly, it brings more straightforward power metal elements. Besides the band members, the album was recorded by 21 musicians and singers, and so the number of guests has expanded since the last album.

Are you writing new songs for an upcoming album? When it comes out?
Well, right now we focus more on live shows as we are finally allowed to do them due to good covid situation. This year, we have released a lockdown video, lockdown concert, an epic videoclip Of love, of war, of blood, a lyric video Touhy v mlze and finally a recoded video from our live show. But we do not sleep and we already have some ideas and basic riffs for the upcoming album. The question is when we are going to finish them. I guess, it could at end of 2022 or during 2023.

Can you anticipate something? What will his musical direction be?
Yes, of course. In next few months we are going to release a new album completely in English. This is just a re-edition of Angels and beasts. Next year, we would like to shoot a new epic video similar like Of love, of war, of blood. It will be made in exterior with actors, so, we are looking forward making it. Concerning the musical directions, we always try to create something origin in our style. Someone said there should be some cello parts there. We will see.

A seven-piece line-up including three singers. Very demanding?
Haha. Yes, it is. It is uneasy to agree on something as everyone has slightly different point of view. Everyone can contribute to the final result. Indeed, the contribution is much welcomed in our band. Fortunately, we love what we do and we are able to make some decision at the end. As you said, we have three singers. Usually, only two of them sing on a particular show. Therefore, we have three singer’s combinations. We exchange them and you never know which one will perform the next show.

Are you also planning a tour?
Yes, we have planned a small tour at the end of this year. We will be playing at several clubs in the Czech Republic. Together with us there will be playing Donor and Rebel band. These guys are nice and we enjoy touring with them.

Your musical influences?
Nightwish, Epica, Avantasia, Edguy and generally also those that can be called classics of symphonic power metal. But I always add that we don’t want to be very inspired, because we don’t want to copy anyone. We want to go our own way, we just always somehow fit into the genre of these bands.
