RONNIE ROMERO – Intervista al cantante cileno

Ritchie Blackmore lo ha voluto nei suoi nuovi Rainbow e da lì Ronnie Romero è decollato e non si ferma più. Lords Of Black, Sunstorm, Michael Schenker Group, oltre aiu Rainbow e a tantissime altre collaborazioni. Una voce potente e versatile capace di interpretare tanti colori espressi in note e in musica. Nel giro di pochi mesi sono usciti due album di cover, recensiti su queste pagine, “Raised On Radio” (leggi qui la recensione) e “Raised On Heavy Radio” (leggi qui la recensione). Ma lascio a lui la parola in  questa mia intervista.

Ciao Ronnie e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Due album di cover ravvicinati, perché questa scelta?
CIAO!! Sì, era stato pianificato così fin dall’inizio quindi gli album con quasi lo stesso titolo sono correlati, c’è solo una versione Hard Rock/AOR e l’altra più Heavy. Avrebbe funzionato allo stesso modo se li avessi pubblicati insieme, ma per me ha più senso separare gli “stili”.

Sono tutte brani che hai nel cuore?
Assolutamente, questa è stata la cosa più importante quando ho deciso di fare un album di cover. Per me non ha senso fare cover solo perché, o come alcuni pensano, per “presa di denaro”, che comunque è ridicolo, perché tutti i diritti d’autore di queste cover vanno ai compositori, non a me o alla casa discografica. Capisco fare una cover come tributo per quella canzone o quell’artista perché ti piace/ami quella musica. Tutte le canzoni sono legate a un momento della mia vita, anche della mia infanzia, quindi sì, potrei nominare tutti i ricordi che ognuna di queste canzoni mi porta.

Come mai la decisione di dividerli in due CD separati?
Come ho detto prima, proprio perché gli stili musicali sono diversi… sono cresciuto ascoltando molte band di vari generi, quindi registrare due album secondo me è ancora più interessante per le persone da ascoltare e possono dire, ok, questo ragazzo va dall’Hard Rock, poi all’ AOR, poi l’heavy metal, ma anche nello stesso album trovi varietà, il che è bello, secondo me.

Si parte dagli anni Settanta con i Grand Funk e Uriah Heep, per passare agli anni 80, come Survivor, Russ Ballard e Foreigner, nel secondo cd tutte le canzoni più heavy metal, da Ozzy agli Iron Maiden. Queste canzoni sono le tue preferite di queste band?
Molte di loro sì, altre ho semplicemente deciso di non andare alle scelte ovvie, essendo comunque i miei preferiti. Come ti ho detto, ogni canzone è legata a un ricordo della mia vita. Poi un paio di canzoni, anche quando non sono di una mia band preferita, ho pensato ok, se fai un album Heavy questa band deve essere lì, come gli Iron Maiden per esempio.

“I Was Born To Love You” dal primo CD è una delle canzoni più pop dei Queen, che in realtà è di Freddie Mercury solista. Perché hai scelto quella canzone tra i tanti capolavori dei Queen?
Perché nessuno l’ha mai fatto prima!! Ecco perché questi album sono diversi. Per me è stato molto importante cantare canzoni che nessuno si aspetta che io canti, quindi almeno rendi l’album più interessante e mi porti fuori dalla mia zona di comfort facendo qualcosa di diverso… non credo che la gente si mostrerebbe allo stesso modo interessata se mi presentavo con brani che mi hanno sentito cantare prima, ogni anno o canzoni che puoi trovare centinaia di cover su Youtube.

Sei andato molto indietro nel tempo per rendere omaggio a Ronnie James Dio, niente dal repertorio dei Dio, Black Sabbath e Rainbow ma sei andato a rispolverare addirittura gli Elf. Perché hai scelto gli Elf e quel brano?
Questa è una delle mie canzoni preferite di Ronie James Dio, specialmente dell’era prima dei Rainbow, l’ho sempre trovata più interessante in termini di musicalità e della sua voce. Un anno prima di decidere la tracklist io e mia moglie eravamo in montagna in Transilvania con una chitarra acustica che suonavo e cantavo quella canzone, abbiamo fatto un breve video per il social, e la gente l’ha adorato!! Quindi era abbastanza chiaro che sarebbe stato un ottimo candidato per l’album.

Nel nuovo cd di cover heavy metal ci sono i Deep Purple ma non quelle degli anni ’70, perché gli anni ’80?
Perché per me quell’album e quella particolare canzone sono molto sottovalutati. È stato l’ultimo sforzo della band per rimanere insieme alla formazione classica prima che Blackmore lasciò definitivamente la band per sempre. E hanno fatto un album fantastico di cui non si parla molto. Questa era un’altra condizione per inserire una canzone nell’album, deve essere una canzone sottovalutata che ha bisogno di qualcuno che la riporti sul tavolo e ci ricordi quanto è bella la musica.

In questo nuovo cd ci sono anche degli ospiti illustri, come li hai scelti?
Sono tutti miei buoni amici! E alcuni sono anche molto legati alle canzoni in cui hanno suonato. Gus G ha suonato quel brano molte volte con Ozzy, Roland Grapow ha scritto quel brano!! ecc. Quindi anche questo porta qualcosa di più unico agli album.

Tra i tuoi tanti impegni con tante band di cui sei il cantante, dove hai trovato il tempo per realizzare questi album?
Dormo solo meno delle persone normali!! ahaha. Seriamente, quando ami quello che fai e sei felice di farlo, trovi il tempo. Come dice Arnold Schwarzenegger “se vuoi dormire di più, allora dormi più velocemente!”, che in realtà significa “usa il tuo tempo con saggezza”. Questo è quello che faccio… e ho ancora molto tempo libero da godermi con mia moglie, i nostri cani, viaggiare, ecc.

Continuerai a scrivere album come Ronnie Romero?
In realtà, nel momento in cui stiamo facendo questa intervista, ho appena consegnato all’etichetta discografica un nuovo album a mio nome con undici canzoni originali che ho scritto con la mia band. Quindi sì, questo sarà il passo successivo.

Bella notizia!! Quali saranno gli altri tuoi progetti futuri?
Continuare a lavorare sulle mie cose da solista, andare in tour con Michael Schenker, Elegant Weapons e realizzare un nuovo album con i Lords Of Black.

Tornerai a cantare con i Rainbow?
Non credo. Non ho mai avuto loro notizie dall’inizio della pandemia. Ma onestamente, ed essendo loro grato al mille per cento, non mi sento di volerlo fare di nuovo.

Cosa hai lasciato fuori da questi album? Ci sono delle canzoni che hai tralasciato che vorresti cantare? Ci sarà un terzo volume?
Niente più cover per il momento, ho fatto tutte le canzoni che volevo fare. Ora mi concentrerò sul materiale originale che ho.

Hi Ronnie and welcome to Tuttorock.com. Two cover albums, close together, why this decision?
Ciao!! Yes, it was planned like that from the beginning so the albums with almost the same title are related, is just one Hard Rock/Aor version and the other one more Heavy. It would work the same if we would released together even as only one full album, but for me makes more sense to separate the “styles”.

Are they all songs that are in your heart?
Absolutely, that was the most important thing when we decided to make a covers album. For me makes no sense to do covers just because, or like some people think, for “money grab”, which anyway is ridiculous, because all the royalties of these covers goes to the songwriters, not to me or the record label. I understand make a cover as a tribute for that song or that artist because you like/love that music. All the songs are related to a moment in my life, even from my childhood, so yes, I could name all the memories every of these songs brings to me.

Why the decision to split them into two separate CDs?
As I said before, just because the music styles… I grown up listening many bands from different genres so to put two very differential albums would be even more interesting for people to listen like, ok, this guy goes to the Hard Rock, then the AOR, then the Heavy metal, but even in the same album you find variety, which is cool, in my opinion.

We start from the seventies with Grand Funk and Uriah Heep, to move on to the 80s, such as Survivor, Russ Ballard and Foreigner, on the second CD all the most Heavy metal songs, from Ozzy to Iron Maiden. Are these songs your favorite from these bands?
Many of them yes, others I just decided to not to go to the obvious choices, being my favs anyway. As I told you, every song is related to a memory in my life. Then a couple of songs, even when are not from a fav band of mine, I though ok, if you make a Heavy album this band must be there, like Iron Maiden for example.

“I Was Born To Love You” from the first CD is one of Queen’s most pop songs, which was actually Freddie Mercury’s solo. Why did you choose that song among Queen’s many masterpieces?
Because nobody did it before!! That’s why this albums are different. For me was very important to do songs nobody expect me to sing, so you make, at least, the album more interesting, and takes me out of my comfort zone doing something different… I don’t think the people would shows the same interest if I go with songs they heard me sing before every year or songs you can find hundred covers in Youtube.

You went far back in time to pay tribute to Ronnie James Dio, no Dio, Black Sabbath and Rainbow but even the Elf. Why did you choose Elf and that song?
That’s one of my favorites songs from Dio, specially that era before Rainbow, I always found it more interesting in terms of musicality and His voice. A year before we decided the track list my wife and I we were at the mountains in Transilvanya with an acoustic guitar playing and singing that song, we did a short video for the social, and the people just loved it!! So it was pretty clear that would be a strong candidate for the album.

In the new CD of heavy metal covers, there are Deep Purple but not those of the 70s, why the 80s?
Because for me that album and that particular song are very underrated. It was the last effort of the band to stay together with the classic line up before Blackmore definitely leaves the band, forever. And they did a fantastic album not too much people talks about. That was another condition to put a song in the album, must be an underrated song which needs somebody to bring it on the table again and to remember us how great music it is.

There are also some illustrious guests in this new CD, how did you choose them?
They are all good friends of mine! And some they are even very related to the songs they are playing in. Gus G it played that song many times with Ozzy, Roland Grapow he wrote that song! Etc. So even that brings something more unique to the albums.

Among your many commitments with many bands of which you are the singer, where did you find the time to make these albums?
I just sleep less than normal people!! Hahaha. Seriously, when you love what you do, and you are happy doing it, you find time. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger says “if you want to sleep more, then sleep faster!”, which really means “use your time wisely”. That’s what I do… and I still have a lot of free time to enjoy with my wife, our dogs, traveling, etc.

Will you also continue to write albums like Ronnie Romero?
Actually at the time we are doing this interview, I just delivered to the record label a new album under my name with eleven original songs I wrote with my band. So yes, that’s the next step.

What are your future projects?
Keep working on my solo stuff, touring with Michael Schenker, Elegant Weapons, and to make a new album with Lords Of Black.

Will you come back to sing with Rainbow?
I don’t think so. I never got any news from them since the pandemy starts. But honestly, and being thousand percent grateful to them, I don’t feel I want to do it again.

What did you leave out of these albums? Are there any songs you left out that you would like to sing? Will there be a third volume?
No more covers by the moment, we did all the songs we wanted to do. Now we gonna focus on the original material we have.
