RON GALLO – Intervista su “Foreground Music”
In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “FOREGROUND MUSIC” ho intervistato RON GALLO.
Ciao Ron, piacere di ritrovarti ancora una volta. Questo tuo nuovo disco è fantastico, percepisco molta positività rispetto gli ultimi lavori, il periodo buio è passato?
Haha, non necessariamente passato, ma forse più camuffato. Sta decisamente migliorando, sembra che emergiamo collettivamente da alcuni anni particolarmente impegnativi. Mi sento piuttosto bene in questo momento e ho molto da aspettarmi.
Il tuo album è un atto di accusa contro le cose brutte del mondo moderno, il rock può ancora essere un motore di cambiamento?
Immagino che tecnicamente sì, ma non sono sicuro di quanto impatto possa avere, dal momento che il “rock” è diventato questo mondo musicale molto stanco e annacquato. Non la vedo nemmeno necessariamente come “musica rock” poiché sono molto più influenzato dalle sue propaggini – punk di fine anni ’70, post-punk, garage, ecc. musica Voglio almeno provare a spostare il confine in AVANTI, avendo la consapevolezza che questo è il 2023, sperimentando e mescolando cose nuove, perché rigurgitare cose vecchie non contribuisce proprio alla crescita. Si tratta di ridefinire il significato di tutte queste cose.
Quattro brani come Entitled man, Yucca Valley marshalls, San Benedetto, Big truck energy, quattro sound diversi, sei d’accordo? Ami spaziare tra suoni diversi?
SÌ! Essere vivi è un’esperienza a spettro completo in continua evoluzione, non è una cosa unica, quindi, penso che la musica dovrebbe riflettere questo. Mi piacciono molte cose.
Se dovessi scegliere una canzone preferita nella tracklist?
Il primo pensiero va a “Can my flowers even grow?”, ma sento anche che “I LOVE SOMEONE BURIED INSIDE OF YOU” è stata una di quelle canzoni che sono riuscite a catturare perfettamente un sentimento. Poi c’è “BIG TRUCK ENERGY” che mi piace perché non ho trattenuto nulla. “AT LEAST I’M DANCING” è probabilmente la canzone che racconta maggiormente di me stesso che abbia mai composto. Non lo so! È difficile scegliere!
Anything but this è proposta in due versioni, come è nata l’idea e cosa volevi realizzare?
La versione originale si adattava meglio al tema del disco, ma il nostro co-produttore, Jerry, voleva rielaborare una versione alternativa che fosse molto più lo-fi e meno ROCK e ci è piaciuto anche questa, alla fine, quindi, abbiamo usato entrambe le versioni.
Progetti futuri? Ti vedremo in tour?
Molti tour in programma quest’anno. Stiamo lavorando alle date in Italia. Poi devo finire un libro e un film-concerto. Ma soprattutto, tour!

Hi Ron, nice to meet you again. This new album of yours is fantastic, I perceive a lot of positivity with respect to your latest works, has the dark period passed?
Haha, not necessarily passed but maybe more disguised. It’s definitely getting better it seems as we emerge from a particularly challenging few years collectively. I’m feeling pretty good at the moment though and lots to look forward to.
Your album is an indictment against the bad things of the modern world, can rock still be an engine of change?
I guess technically yes, but not sure how much impact it can have since “rock” has become this very tired, watered down world of music. I don’t even necessarily see this as “rock music” as i’m much more influenced by the offshoots of it – late 70’s punk, post-punk, garage, etc. but since it all falls under the umbrella being guitar-based music I at least want to try to move it FORWARD by having an awareness that this is 2023, experimenting and blending things because regurgitating old things doesn’t really contribute. It’s about redefining what all these things mean.
Four songs like Entitled man, Yucca Valley marshalls, San Benedetto, Big truck energy, four different sounds, do you agree? Do you love to range between different sounds?
Yes! Being alive is a full spectrum everchanging experience, it’s not all one thing so I think music should reflect that. I like a lot of things.
What if you had to choose a favorite song in the tracklist?
The first thought is “CAN MY FLOWERS EVEN GROW?” but I also feel like “I LOVE SOMEONE BURIED DEEP INSIDE OF YOU” was one of those songs that happened that really perfectly captured a feeling. then there’s “BIG TRUCK ENERGY” which i like because i didn’t hold anything back. “AT LEAST I’M DANCING” is probably the most myself of a song I’ve ever made. I don’t know! It’s hard to choose!
Anything but this is proposed in two versions, how did the idea come about and what did you want to achieve?
The original version fit the theme of the record better but our co-producer, Jerry wanted to rework an alternative version that was much more lo-fi and less ROCK and we loved that as well so we used both.
Future projects? Will we see you on tour?
Much touring to happen this year. We’re working on Italy dates. Finishing a book and a concert film. But mostly, tour!
