ROB MORATTI – Intervista al cantante canadese

Con “Epical” (leggi qui la recensione), Rob Moratti è tornato da solista con il suo hard rock melodico e AOR e la sua sempre in grande forma voce. Ho avuto il piacere di intervistarlo e di seguito l’intervista.

Ciao Rob e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Complimenti per il tuo nuovo album da solista, brani ricchi di ottimi spunti melodici perfetti per il tuo timbro vocale. Raccontaci, come sono nate le canzoni?
Ciao Fabio! Grazie mille per avermi ospitato. Grazie mille, sono felice che ti piaccia. Assolutamente! È una collaborazione che funziona perfettamente per me e per noi co-sceneggiatori. Grazie a Dio per Internet ora che rende possibile connettersi e diventare creativi insieme in tempo reale. La maggior parte delle canzoni su cui ho lavorato con Ulrick Lönnqvist alimentando idee avanti e indietro fino a quando non siamo stati felici. Lui e Pete sono con me ormai da un paio di dischi. Ora c’è più conforto e fiducia man mano che progrediamo. La chimica è reale, è incredibile! Lo stesso vale per Fredik Bergh e Felix Borg.

I testi o le parti musicali sono stati scritti per primi?
Per me è sempre la musica al primo posto. Questa è la bellezza di lavorare con loro. Tutti hanno fornito brani musicali come punto di partenza per l’ispirazione. Se ti sembra giusto, lo seguirò con i testi. Aggiungere melodie e anche cambiarle, creare armonie e tutto il resto… non è stato un lavoro difficile e molto divertente.

Lo stile è sempre tra AOR e hard rock melodico, è quello che volevi È l’anima di Rob Moratti?
Sì, lo è. Sono cresciuto con la migliore musica, ispirata dagli anni ’70 e ’80 ed è scolpita nella mia anima. Dopo tutti questi anni sto facendo quello che amo di più come scrittore, mixer e produttore. Sono molto contento del risultato ed è senza dubbio la mia migliore produzione.

Tra le tue preferenze musicali ci sono i Journey, ma quali sono le altre tue influenze musicali e i tuoi cantanti preferiti?
Assolutamente, adoro Steve Perry ma ci sono molte influenze come Brad Delp dei Boston, Jimi Jamison dei Survivor, Lou Gramm dei Foreigner, Fergie Fredriksen dei Toto, Dennis DeYoung e Tommy Shaw degli Styx, Mickey Thomas degli Starship, Geoffe Tate dei Queensryche, Bruce Dickinson degli Iron Maiden. Solo per citarne alcuni.

Perché “Epical”? Quanto e cosa c’è di epico nei vari brani?
Ho sentito che l’album ha momenti epici in ogni traccia. Mi è sembrato giusto. Non c’è davvero una canzone debole e la produzione è enorme. Ho iniziato una cosa per i miei dischi da solista che funziona. È stato un titolo di una parola con tre sillabe su tutti e cinque i dischi.

Il significato dei testi? C’è qualche messaggio dietro?
Quando si tratta dei testi, cerco di scrivere su ciò che tutti abbiamo in comune, che sia felice o triste. Tutti possiamo identificarci con esso. Questo è rock melodico! Nessuno spazio per opinioni politiche. È il tuo momento e il tuo posto per scappare. Proprio come si faceva allora. La musica ti porta lì.

E’ il tuo primo album con la Frontiers Records, come li hai conosciuti?
Ad essere onesti, li avevo incontrati decenni fa con i Final Frontier, “High Tension Wire” è stato rilasciato attraverso di loro. Quindi è passato un po’ di tempo. Ora il mio disco da solista “Epical” era quasi completo e ho pensato di farmi contattare da Serafino e Mario e vedere se volevano ascoltarlo. Per fortuna lo hanno fatto ed eccoci qui. Non potrei essere più felice. È una squadra fantastica e un ottimo posto dove stare per me.

Il futuro di Rob Moratti sarà sempre da solista?
Sono molto contento del mio lavoro da solista e mi piace fare quello che faccio, dalla scrittura alla registrazione, mixaggio e produzione completa. Ogni disco ha qualcosa di speciale e sono ancora appassionato di tutto il mio lavoro. Al momento non ho intenzione di espandermi.

Nel tuo curriculum ci sono Final Frontiers e Saga, cosa è rimasto nel tuo cuore e quali ricordi hai di quelle collaborazioni?
Sono stati alcuni dei momenti migliori di sempre. Erano entrambe cose reali per me. Il disco dei Final Frontier è stato scritto in studio e sono rimasto stupito da quello che stavamo registrando allora. Questo è quando mi sono espanso vocalmente e ha iniziato tutto per me. Quando sono entrato a far parte dei Saga, a questo punto avevo il mio studio e avevo capito il livello più avanzato della registrazione digitale. Quindi lavorare per la maggior parte del tempo anche con Ian e Jim. Essendo rock progressivo, mi hanno dato la libertà di lavorare melodicamente e liricamente con ciò che hanno trasmesso musicalmente. La chimica era semplicemente incredibile. Sono ancora grato per tutto.

Nel tuo ultimo album suonano musicisti come Joel Hoekstra e Tony Franklin, come li hai coinvolti?
Joel aveva suonato anche su “Paragon” 6 canzoni ma ora su “Epical” ho avuto il piacere di fargli suonare l’intero disco. Entrambi ci siamo divertiti a lavorare insieme. La chimica è reale. Ricordo di averlo contattato e di avergli chiesto se fosse interessato. Per fortuna lo era e lo è ancora. Tony è stato con me sin dal mio primo disco da solista “Victory” ed eccoci qui cinque dischi dopo. Le sue esibizioni cambiano le sensazioni nella canzone in un modo così bello. Per me questi signori sono il meglio del meglio.

Stai programmando un tour?
Potrei avere alcuni spettacoli in programma in primavera, estate, ma ancora niente in programma. Sto scrivendo e registrando attivamente per il prossimo disco da solista il prossimo anno.

Hi Rob and welcome to Tuttorock. Congratulations on your new solo album, songs full of excellent melodic cues perfect for your vocal timbre. Tell us, how were the songs born?
Hi Fabio! Thank you very much for having me. Thank you so much, I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Absolutely! It’s a collaboration that works perfectly for me and for us as co writers. Thank God for the internet now that makes it possible to connect and get creative together in real time. Most of the songs I’ve  worked with Ulrick Lönnqvist feeding ideas back and forth until we’re happy. He and Pete have been with me now for a couple of records. Now there’s more comfort and trust as we progress. The chemistry is real, it’s amazing! The same goes for Fredik Bergh and Felix Borg.

Were the lyrics or musical parts written first?
It’s always the music first for me. That’s the beauty of working with them. They all delivered musical tracks as a starting point for inspiration. If it feels right then I’ll go with it lyically. Adding melodies and changing them as well, creating harmonies and all… it’s been a nothing hard work and a lot fun in the process.

The style is always between AOR and melodic hard rock, is it what you wanted Is it the soul of Rob Moratti?
Yes it is. I grew up with the best music, inspired by the 70’2 and 80’s and  it’s engraved in my soul. After all these years I’m doing what I love the most as a writer, mixer and producer. I’m very content with the result and it’s easily my best production.

Among your musical preferences there are Journey, but what are your other musical influences and your favorite singers?

Why “Epical”? How much and what is epic in the various songs?
I felt the album has epical moments in every track. It just felt right to me. There really isn`t a weak or song and the production is enormous. I`ve started a thing for my solo records that works. It`s been a one word titles with three syllables on all five records.

The meaning of the lyrics? Is there any message behind it?
When it comes to the Lyrics I try to write about what we all have in common whether its happy or sad. We can all relate to it. That’s melodic rock! No room for political views. It’s your time and place to escape.  Just like it used to be back then. The music  takes you to there.

It’s your first album with Frontiers Records, how did you meet them?
To be honest, I had met them decades ago with Final Frontier “High Tension Wire” was released through them. So it’s been a while. Now my solo record “Epical” was almost complete and I thought let me reach out to Serafino and Mario and see if they’d want to give it a listen. Thankfully they did and here we are now. I couldn’t be happier. It’s an amazing team and a great place to be for me.

Will Rob Moratti’s future always be as a soloist?
I’m very happy with my solo work and I enjoy doing what I do, from the writing to recording, mixing and full production. Every record has something special and I’m still passionate about all my work.  At the moment I don’t plan on branching out.

In your curriculum there are the Final Frontiers and the Saga, what is rhyming in your heart and what haik memories of those collaborations?
It was some of the best times ever. They were both real things for me. The Final Frontier record were written at the studio and I was amazed with what we were recording back then.  This is when I expanded vocally and started it all for me. When I joined Saga, at this point I had my own studio and understood the nest level of digital recording. So working with most of time with Ian and Jim too. Being progressive rock they gave me the freedom to melodically and lyrically work with what they delivered musically. The chemistry was just incredible. I’m still grateful for it all.

In your latest album musicians like Joel Hoekstra and Tony Franklin play, how did you involve them?
Joel had played on Paragon as well 6 songs but now on Epical I had the pleasure of having him play the entire record. We both had fun working together. The chemistry is real. I remember reaching out to him and asked him if he’d be interested. Thankfully he was and still is. Tony’s been with me since my first solo record Victory and here we are five records later. His performances change what feel in the song in such a good way. For me these gentlemen are the best of the best.

Are you planning a tour?
I may have a few shows lined up in the spring, summer but nothing planned as of yet. I’m actively writing and recording as speak  for the next solo record next year sometime.

I leave the interview to you, what do you want to say to your Italian fans?
Thank you so much for your support over the years! Without you all, I wouldn’t  be doing this today. I’m forever grateful. Epical is going Rock you! Enjoy!!
