RIE A.K.A. SUZAKU – Intervista alla chitarrista giapponese
E’ la mia seconda intervista alla chitarrista giapponese Rie Tomimatsu, in arte Rie a.k.a. Suzaku. Ho parlato con lei di tutti i suoi progetti, dalla sua attività da solista passando per le Muses, splendida realtà jazz rock/fusion e arrivando ad un a nuova band con Masayoshi Yamashita, bassista dei Loudness, storica heavy metal band giapponese. Di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao Rie e bentornata su Tuttorock. Ti avevo intervistato più di 2 anni fa in occasione dell’uscita del tuo album “Top Runner”. Sono successe molte cose, la pandemia, la guerra, un mondo che sembra impazzito, ma tu sei andata avanti con tantissime novità nella tua musica. Raccontaci qualche cosa.
Dopo aver pubblicato “Top Runner”, ho prodotto e pubblicato gli album “World Journey” e “World Journey 2” con il tema del viaggio intorno al mondo. L’ho fatto con la sensazione che vorrei che tu avessi voglia di viaggiare per il mondo rimanendo a casa mentre il mondo è confuso dalla pandemia. È stato molto difficile realizzare questi album analizzando e imparando la musica di vari paesi. Nel frattempo, ho pubblicato due album best of di canzoni strumentali e vocali e quest’anno ho formato una band fusion femminile le Muses e ho pubblicato un album.
Hai continuato a fare tanti concerti in Giappone, quanto è importante per te suonare davanti ad un pubblico?
Ci sono molte cose che possono essere trasmesse solo dal vivo ai concerti. Per me ogni concerto è molto speciale e importante. Quindi posso dire dò tutto per questo.
Uscirà qualche tuo concerto in un CD?
I CD non verranno pubblicati, ma sono stati rilasciati alcuni DVD di concerti.
Tante tue uscite discografiche in questi 2/3anni, due best of di cui uno con i tuoi migliori brani strumentali, perché questa scelta?
Per commemorare il decimo anniversario del mio debutto, ho pubblicato dei best of.
Poi “World Journey” e “World Journey 2”, due album dedicati alle città del mondo, da dove è venuta l’idea?
Il presidente della label ha avuto questa idea per molto tempo. Mi è sempre piaciuta la world music, quindi ho pensato di provarla.
Nessuna dedica all’Italia? A quale città italiana dedicheresti una tua canzone?
Sono stato solo a Belluno, Arona e Milano in Italia. Tuttavia, “Apocalypse”, è stata creata a immagine dell’Italia registrata in “World Journey 2”, ha composto il tema del Giudizio Universale nella Cappella Sistina in Vaticano.
Hai qualche novità sulle RiViNi?
Non ci sono piani per le RiViNi in futuro.
Parlami ora della band Muses, come è nata l’idea?
I due produttori hanno inventato alcuni nomi di band. Tra questi, Muses è stato deciso dal voto dei membri.
Presentami le ragazze che suonano con te nelle Muses.
Al basso c’è Juna Serita, le tastiere Marie Fukai e alla batteria Kanade Sato. Suono con queste ragazze da molto tempo.
Il sound è diverso dal tuo stile, fusion, funky e jazz rock, è anche questa una delle tue preferenze?
Non sono particolarmente esigente riguardo ai generi. Voglio fondere la musica che ritengo buona, indipendentemente dal genere.
A quali musicisti del genere fusion ti sei ispirata?
T-SQUARE, CASIOPEA, Michiya Haruhata, Prism, Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, Greg Howe, Larry Carlton & Steve Lukather, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson…ecc.
Essendo tu una chitarrista bravissima e molto esperta, quale consiglio daresti ad un giovane o ad una giovane chitarrista per diventare un vero axe hero?
Sicuramente quello di ascoltare molta musica diversa, di andare a molti concerti e imparerete molto.

Con le RiViNi, suoni pop ma con una forte dose di rock e metal, come Rie Aka Suzaku suoni principalmente heavy metal e con le Muses fusion, quale sarà la sorpresa del nuovo album di Rie Tomimatsu?
Il mio prossimo album da solista sarà probabilmente un album outlet più esoterico. Non riesco ancora a vedere l’intero quadro, ma sembra essere un suono con un forte elemento prog.
A quali altri progetti stai lavorando?
Attualmente suono la chitarra nel progetto metal band “HARUKA” creato dal bassista dei LOUDNESS Masayoshi Yamashita.
Hai altre passioni oltre la musica?
Mi piace cucinare e gli oli essenziali doTERRA.
Il tuo sogno nel cassetto?
Voglio partecipare a concerti e festival musicali in molti paesi. Voglio anche provare a diventare un drammaturgo un giorno.

Hi Rie, welcome to Tutto Rock. Over two years ago, I interviewed you on the occasion of the release of your album “Top Runner”. A lot has happened: pandemics, wars, a world that seems crazy. please tell me something.
After releasing Top Runner, I produced and released the albums “World Journey” and “World Journey2” with the theme of traveling around the world. I made it with the feeling that I would like you to feel like traveling around the world while staying at home while the world is confused by the pandemic. It was very difficult to make this album while analyzing and learning music from various countries. In the meantime, we released two best albums of instrumental and vocal songs. And this year, they formed a girl fusion band “Muses” and released an album.
You have had many concerts in Japan, how important is it to you to perform in front of an audience?
There are many things that can only be conveyed live at concerts. For me, each gig is very special and important. So you can say that you spend everything for it.
Will some concerts be released on CD?
CDs will not be released, but some concert DVDs have been released.
You’ve released a lot of recordsin the last couple of years, two of which are the best, one of which is the best instrumental. Why did you make this choice?
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of our debut, we released a best album.
And then, his two albums dedicated to world cities, ‘World Journey’ and ‘World Journey 2’, where did the idea come from?
The president had this idea for a long time. I’ve always liked world music, so I thought I’d give it a try.
Do you have a dedication to Italy? Which Italian city do you dedicate your songs to?
I have only been to Belluno, Arona and Milan in Italy. However, Apocalypse, which was created in the image of Italy recorded in World Journey 2, composed the theme of the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
Any news about RiViNi?
There are no plans to do RiViNi in the future.
Tell us about the band Muses. How did the idea come about?
The two producers came up with some band names. Among them, Muses was decided by member voting.
Introduce the girl playing with you on Muses.
Bass is Juna Serita, Keyboard is Marie Fukai, Kanade Sato on drums. I have been playing with this member for a long time. He is also a friend who appeared with this member at the 2019 UK metal festival.
The sound is different from your style, fusion, funky, jazz rock, is this one of your tastes too?
I’m not particularly particular about genres. I want to fuse the music that I feel is good, regardless of the genre.
Which musicians in the fusion genre influenced you?

You are a very good and experienced guitarist, what advice would you give a young guitarist to become a true ax hero?
I want you to listen to a lot of different music, go to a lot of concerts, and learn a lot.

RiViNi plays pop music, but has more rock and metal elements like Rie Aka Rie Aka Suzaku, mainly plays his heavy metal, Muses fusion, but Rie Tomimatsu’s new him. album surprise?
Your next solo album is likely to be a more esoteric outlet album. I can’t see the whole picture yet, but it seems to be a sound with a strong prog element.
What other projects are you working on?
I’m currently playing guitar in the metal band project “HARUKA” created by LOUDNESS bassist Masayoshi Yamashita.
Do you have any other passions besides music?
I like cooking and doTERRA essential oils.
What is your secret dream?
I want to go to concert tours and music festivals in many countries. I also want to try being a playwright someday.
