POM – Intervista su We were girls together

In occasione dell’uscita del loro primo album “WE WERE GIRLS TOGETHER” ho intervistato la band POM.

Ciao, piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Volete raccontarci come vi siete incontrati e come sono nati i POM?
Liza: Quando avevo 16 anni, ho frequentato una scuola di musica insieme al nostro bassista Michael. Ad un certo punto ci è arrivato un incarico per il quale dovevamo formare una band. Io e Michael volevamo fare qualcosa insieme e abbiamo deciso di cercare altre persone. Ho incontrato entrambi i nostri chitarristi (Luc e Joy) durante le feste nella nostra città natale e ho chiesto loro di unirsi a noi. Luc è sembrato subito davvero entusiasta, ma ricordo che Joy ha detto di sì e quando gli ho chiesto informazioni un altro giorno, sembrava che se ne fosse pentito. Tuttavia, credo che dopo la nostra prima prova, fosse felice di essersi unito alla band e penso che lo sia ancora ahah. Michael ha chiesto al nostro batterista (Justin) di unirsi a noi dato che avevano già suonato insieme in una band prima. Una volta terminato il progetto scolastico, abbiamo deciso di continuare come band, e ora siamo qui. 

Quali sono i vostri background musicali? Gli artisti che vi hanno portato a iniziare la carriera musicale?
Luc: Abbiamo tutti ispirazioni diverse, amiamo tutti la musica pop ma le nostre playlist spaziano dal country all’hip-hop e RNB, al metal. È bello ascoltare tanti generi diversi ed è ancora fonte di ispirazione oggi provare a fonderli tutti insieme quando facciamo musica insieme. 

Che panorama musicale c’è in Olanda? Non arrivano spesso band dal vostro paese.
Justin: Penso che la scena musicale in Olanda sia fantastica. Ci sono un sacco di atti straordinari. Canti come “Nusantara Beat”, “Mood Bored” e “Dorpsstraat 3” dovete provarli. Inoltre, nascono continuamente nuovi artisti, quindi sono entusiasta per il futuro della scena musicale in Olanda. Non dimenticate di invitarli tutti in Italia. Sono sicuro che lo adoreranno e tu apprezzerai la loro musica. 

Il vostro disco ‘We Were Girls Together’, suona molto maturo, deriva dalle tante esperienze che avete fatto live?
Justin: Penso che sicuramente questo ci abbia aiutato molto. Vedere come le persone reagiscono alla nostra musica e sapere quali sono i nostri brani preferiti prima che raggiungano Internet è un ottimo modo per vedere.
Liza: L’album parla del periodo in cui cresci, dall’adolescenza fino all’età adulta. La maggior parte delle canzoni parlano di esperienze che ho avuto e che mi hanno plasmato nella persona che sono oggi, anche se ho cercato di scriverle in modo che anche gli altri possano identificarsi. Sono felice di vedere che gli altri possano trovare conforto nelle canzoni che scriviamo, il che mi fa sentire meno solo in queste esperienze. 

I miei pezzi preferiti sono Eskeleton, molto frizzante, e Run che trovo molto rock. Vedo che sono gli stessi che nominate perché descrivono momenti particolari della vostra vita.
Justin: Grazie! 

Di tutti i festival e luoghi che avete visitato ce ne è uno che ricordate in maniera particolare?
Luc: Due anni fa adoravamo suonare “Bevrijdingspop Haarlem” (Giorno della Liberazione). Era il pubblico più numeroso che abbiamo avuto e l’energia era semplicemente pazzesca.
Liza: Mi è piaciuto molto anche suonare al Bevrijdingspop Haarlem perché è stata la mia festa preferita fin da quando ero bambina, e vado ancora a questo festival ogni anno perché mia madre vive (e sono cresciuta) lì vicino. È stata un’esperienza davvero folle suonare su un palco che passi così tanto tempo a guardare come visitatore. Ho anche invitato i miei nonni a venire a vedere lo spettacolo e potevano parcheggiare la macchina nel backstage, il che è stato fantastico perché normalmente non possono venire ai nostri spettacoli perché non è così accessibile per loro e non possono stare in piedi o camminare troppo a lungo. 

State arrivando in Italia per un lungo tour, che rapporto avete con il nostro paese? Lo conoscete già? Cosa promettete ai fan che verranno a vedervi?
Liza: Io e Justin (il nostro batterista) siamo stati in Italia la scorsa estate per due settimane per andare in campeggio. Ci siamo divertiti così tanto insieme e abbiamo pensato di tornare quest’estate.
Justin: sono d’accordo. Ottima vacanza! L’acqua in Italia è fantastica per nuotare ogni giorno ed è così limpida. Se nuoti puoi vedere tutto. Anche la temperatura era così piacevole anche di notte.
Liza: E per rispondere alla tua seconda domanda: quando le persone vengono a vedere i nostri spettacoli possono aspettarsi molta energia e balli, e speriamo che si divertano e condividano la nostra energia così potremo passare una fantastica serata insieme. 

Progetti futuri?
Luc: Stiamo attualmente lavorando su più singoli da pubblicare quest’anno e allo stesso tempo stiamo lavorando al nuovo album che dovrebbe uscire nel 2025.

Hello, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. Do you want to tell us how you met and how POM was born?
Liza: When I was 16, I went to a music school together with our bassist Michael. At some point, there was an assignment for which we had to form a band. Me and Michael wanted to do something together and decided to look for other people. I met both of our guitarists (Luc & Joy) through parties in our hometown, and asked them to join us. Luc immediately seemed really enthusiastic, but I remember Joy saying yes and when I asked him about it another day, it looked like he kind of regretted it. However, I believe that after our first rehearsal, he was happy that he joined the band and I think he still is haha. Michael asked our drummer (Justin) to join us as they already played together in a band before. After the school project was finished, we decided to continue as a band, and now we are here. 

What are your musical backgrounds? The artists who led you to start your musical career?
Luc: We all have different inspirations, We all love pop music but our playlists range from country to hip-hop and RNB, to metal. It’s cool to listen to lots of different genres and it’s still inspiring today to try and blend it all together when we’re making music together. 

What is the musical scene in Holland? Bands from your country don’t come often.
Justin: I think the musical scene in Holland is great. Lots of amazing acts. Acts like “Nusantara Beat”, “Mood Bored” and “Dorpsstraat 3“ you have to check them out. Also, new acts are starting all the time so I’m excited for the future of the musical scene in Holland. Don’t forget to invite them all to Italy. I’m sure they will love it and you will enjoy their music. 

Your album ‘We Were Girls Together’ sounds very mature, does it come from the many experiences you have had live?
Justin: I think that for sure helped us a lot. To see how people react to our music and have favorite tracks of ours before it hits the internet is a great way to see.
Liza: The album is about the time when you grow up from a young teenager until young adulthood. Most of the songs are about experiences I had that shaped me into the person that I am today, although I tried to write them in a way that others can also relate. I’m happy to see that others can find comfort in the songs that we write, which makes me feel less alone in these experiences. 

My favorite pieces are Eskeleton, very sparkling, and Run which I find very rock. I see that they are the same ones you mention because they describe particular moments in your life.
Justin: Thank you! 

Of all the festivals and places you have visited, is there one that you remember in particular?
Luc: We loved playing ‘Bevrijdingspop Haarlem’ (Liberation Day) two years back. It was the biggest crowd we’ve had and the energy was just insane.
Liza: I also really enjoyed playing at Bevrijdingspop Haarlem because it has been my favourite holiday since I was a child, and I still go to this festival every year because my mother lives (and I grew up) next to it. It felt like such an insane experience to play on a stage that you spend so much time just looking at as a visitor. I also invited my grandparents to come see the show and they could park their car backstage which was great because they normally can’t come to our shows because it’s not that accessible for them and they can’t stand or walk for too long. 

You are coming to Italy for a long tour, what relationship do you have with our country? Do you already know him? What do you promise the fans who come to see you?
Liza: Me and Justin (our drummer) went to Italy last summer for two weeks to go camping. We had such a great time together and considered returning this summer.
Justin: I agree. Great vacation! The water in Italy was amazing to swim in every day and it is so clear. If you swim you can see everything. The temperature was also so nice even at night.
Liza: And to answer your second question: When people come to see our shows they can expect a lot of energy, and dancing, and we hope that they will have fun and share our energy so we can have a great night together. 

Future projects?
Luc: We’re currently working on more singles to release this year and at the same time we are working on the new album that is supposed to come out in 2025.
