PHIL PALMER – Intervista su PP50 Sessionman

Buongiorno Phil, piacere di ritrovarci dopo la volta scorsa per i Dire Straits Legacy. Ho recentemente intervistato Ilaria Argiolas che mi ha parlato della vostra collaborazione, lei è entusiasta della tua partecipazione, hai aggiunto il rock romano alle tue sessioni? 😊
Ciao Maurizio… Ilaria è diventata una cara amica e come sempre, ho cercato di trovare un’interpretazione autentica per le sue canzoni… non so cosa sia effettivamente Rock Romano, ma ci siamo divertiti. 

50 anni da sessionman, cosa ti ha insegnato questo tipo di carriera? La storia della musica è piena di grandi artisti che hanno ricoperto questo ruolo, pensi che sia una figura a cui è riconosciuto il giusto valore?
La funzione di un session man è la capacità di essere in grado di interpretare accuratamente le idee dell’artista o del produttore in un modo che abbellisca la canzone o il pezzo in modo soddisfacente… allo stesso tempo consentendo l’input creativo del session man stesso. 

aneddoti e ricordi particolari di questi 50 anni?
E’ tutto nel mio libro “Session man” è un resoconto franco e onesto di 50 anni di attività… ci sono storie da dietro le E’ quinte, alcune si spera umoristiche e altre ricordi personali degli stress quotidiani e delle sfide della vita in studio e in tournée. 

Come è nata l’idea di questo spettacolo e la partecipazione di Paola Maugeri?
L’idea è nata durante il primo lockdown da covid quando io e Numa abbiamo avviato un evento in streaming online da casa chiamato “Casa Palmer”… siamo stati incoraggiati dal feedback che abbiamo ricevuto da persone sinceramente interessate alle storie dietro la mia carriera… con Paola si è evoluta in una sorta di intervista documentario con musica dal vivo, qualcosa di abbastanza nuovo credo!

Sarai sul palco a suonare con tanti altri grandi strumentisti, come hai formato la band?
La band con Andrea Cervetto, Paolo Polifrone, Carlo Palmas e Alex Polifrone si è formata per un paio di eventi l’anno scorso e abbiamo lavorato molto bene insieme. Sono felice che siano tutti disponibili a continuare con il progetto PP50… sono grandi artisti! 

Hai preparato un set particolare per questo evento? Che chitarra userai principalmente?
Userò la mia Strat EC, come al solito attraverso il mio amplificatore Dreamaker PPX2, con alcune canzoni sulla mia acustica Maton. Il set rifletterà le domande di Paola, dove discuteremo sezioni del libro e suoneremo canzoni a cui si fa riferimento. Punti salienti evidenti di alcuni dei grandi artisti con cui ho avuto il privilegio di lavorare. 

Sarà una data unica o ne seguiranno altre?

Progetti futuri?
Lavoro molto con Murray Head, ho le mie cliniche e sono un membro fondatore dei DSL Dire Straits Legacy con i quali faremo anche quest’anno un tour internazionale partendo dal Brasile a maggio e finendo con le date italiane a novembre e dicembre… diciamo che non mi piace stare fermo.

Hi Phil, nice to meet again after last time for Dire Straits Legacy. I recently interviewed Ilaria Argiolas who told me about your collaboration, she is enthusiastic about your participation, did you add Roman rock to your sessions? 😊
Hi Maurizio… Ilaria has become a dear friend and as always, I tried to find a sympathetic interpretation for her songs… not sure what Roman Rock is actually but we had fun. 

50 years as a sessionman, what has this type of career taught you? The history of music is full of great artists who have held this role, do you think he is a figure that is recognized as having the right value?
The function of a session man is the ability to  be able to interpret the ideas of the artist or producer accurately in a way that embellishes the song or piece to their satisfaction…at the same time allowing for creative input from the session man himself. 

Anecdotes and particular memories of these 50 years?
My book “Session man” is a frank and honest record of 50 years in the business .. there are stories from behind the scenes, some hopefully humorous and others personal recollections of the everyday stresses and challenges of life in the studio and on tour. 

How did the idea of this show and Paola Maugeri’s participation come about?
The idea was born during the first covid lockdown when Numa and I started an on line streaming event from home called “Casa Palmer”… we were encouraged by the feedback we received from people genuinely interested in the stories behind my career .. with Paola it has evolved into a kind of documentary interview with live music, something quite new I think!  

You will be on stage playing with many other great instrumentalists, how did you form the band?
The band with Andrea Cervetto, Paolo Polifrone, Carlo Palmas and Alex Polifrone was put together for a couple of events last year and we worked really well together. I’m happy that they are all available to continue with the PP50 project… great players!  

Have you prepared a particular set for this event? What guitar will you mainly use?
I will be using my EC strat as usual through my Dreamaker PPX2 amplifier, with a few songs on my Maton acoustic. The set will reflect the questions from Paola, where we will discuss sections from the book and play songs referenced in it. Obvious highlights from some of the great artists i have had the privilege to work with. 

Will it be a single date or will others follow?
We are scheduling further dates around my commitments with Dire straits Legacy and other projects… watch out for updates from We4Show and on my website Phil Palmer.com 

Future projects?
I work a lot with Murray Head, I have my own clinics and I am a founding member of DSL Dire Straits Legacy with whom we will do an international tour again this year starting from Brazil in May and ending with the Italian dates in November and December .. let’s say we don’t I like to stand still.
