OSKA – Intervista alla cantante austriaca su “My world, my love, Paris”

In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “MY WORLD, MY LOVE, PARIS” ho intervistato OSKA.

Ciao Oska, si legge nella tua biografia che ti sei avvicinata alla musica ascoltando musuca folk e irlandese, quanto è stata importante tua madre in questo?
Il mio amore per la musica è iniziato con la mia famiglia e soprattutto con mia madre. Mia madre metteva su Joan Baez o musica irlandese al mattino. Cantava molte canzoni popolari a me e ai miei fratelli maggiori. 

La musica irlandese quanto è diffusa in Austria?
Nel corso degli anni mi sono resa conto che molti dei miei amici sono cresciuti con la musica irlandese. Non saprei quanto sia veramente diffusa, ma penso che agli austriaci piaccia la buona musica. E l’Irlanda è conosciuta per la sua buona musica 🙂 

Il tuo nuovo disco, molto bello devo dire, non si basa sulla musica irlandese, come sei arrivata al pop?
Sono stata influenzata da molta musica diversa crescendo. Devo ammettere che sono stata principalmente ispirata dalla musica che ascoltavano i miei quattro fratelli più anziani. Mio fratello maggiore mi ha regalato un CD di “Kate Nash” per Natale, mia sorella ascoltava sempre Regina Spektor e mio fratello Michael aveva i poster di “Linkin Park” e “Papa Roach” alle pareti. Nel frattempo, mia madre ha fatto conoscere “Aretha Franklin” in macchina. Ho trovato i miei gusti intorno ai 16 anni e negli ultimi anni ho ascoltato molto Adrienne Lenker, Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, Christian Lee Hutson e Bob Dylan. 

Il titolo dell’album a cosa si riferisce? Paris?
È così difficile scegliere il nome di un album; trovare qualcosa che catturi l’essenza di dodici canzoni che hai scritto in fasi molto diverse della tua vita. Ma un paio di giorni dopo che la canzone “My world, My love, Paris” è stata scritta, mi è stato molto chiaro che volevo che l’album avesse lo stesso nome. La canzone significa così tanto per me e il titolo della canzone suona come l’inizio di una lettera d’amore. Una lettera d’amore a questo bellissimo pianeta su cui viviamo, di cui non ci prendiamo abbastanza cura. E una lettera d’amore alla musica, la relazione più lunga che ho mai avuto (ah, ah). 

Se dovessi scegliere una tua canzone preferita nella tracklist?
Probabilmente sarebbe “My World, My Love, Paris” e “Misunderstood”. Entrambe le canzoni sono molto orientate ai testi, specialmente la prima. Adoro anche gli arrangiamenti per archi di queste due canzoni. In generale penso che gli archi siano i protagonisti di questo album 🙂

Com’è la scena musicale austriaca al momento? Cosa si ascolta?
Apprezzo molto la scena musicale austriaca perché è davvero unica e diversa. Al momento mi piace ascoltare artisti austriaci come “Doppelfinger”, “Sophie Blenda” o “Skofi”. 

Cosa ti ha ispirato nella composizione dell’album?
Mi piace trarre ispirazione da situazioni di vita reale, ma cerco anche sempre di cercare idee fuori dal mio contesto personal. Con questo disco ho cercato di inventare storie, trarre ispirazione da film, conversazioni e storie che mi commuovono. Ma quando si tratta di descrivere i sentimenti devo sempre guardare dentro di me. Quindi le tracce si richiamano a me e alle mie esperienze. “Starstruck”, ad esempio, è stato ispirato dal film “Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind”, ma ho cercato di dare un senso alla storia mettendola in relazione con la mia vita, le mie esperienze e le mie emozioni. 

Progetti futuri? Un tour? Magari in Italia?
Quest’anno sarà tutto incentrato sul tour dell’album e spero di passare anche in Italia quest’anno 🙂

Hi Oska, you can read in your biography that you approached music by listening to folk and Irish musica, how important was your mother in this?
My love for music began with my family and especially with my mom. My mom either put on Joan Baez or Irish music in the morning. She would sing a lot of folk songs to me and my older siblings. 

How widespread is Irish music in Austria?
Over the years I’ve come to realize that quite a few of my friends have grown up with Irish music. I wouldn’t know how widespread it truly is but I think Austrians enjoy good music. And Ireland is known for its good music 🙂 

Your new record, very nice I must say, is not based on Irish music, how did you get to pop?
I was influenced by a lot different music growing up. I have to admit that I was mostly inspired by the music my four older siblings were listening to. My oldest brother got me a „Kate Nash“ CD for Christmas, my sister was always listening to Regina Spektor and my brother Michael had „Linkin Park“ and „Papa Roach“ posters on his walls. Meanwhile my mother blasted „Aretha Franklin“ in the car. I found my own taste around 16 and the last few years I’ve been listening a lot to Adrienne Lenker, Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, Christian Lee Hutson and Bob Dylan. 

What does the album title refer to? Paris?
It’s so hard to choose the name of an album; to find something that captures the essence of twelve songs you’ve written at very different stages of your life. But a couple of days after the song „My world, My love, Paris“ was written, it was very clear to me that I wanted the album to have the same name. The song means so much to me and the song-title sounds like the beginning of a love letter. A love letter to this beautiful planet we’re living on, that we do not take enough care of. And a love letter to music – my longest relationship yet (ha, ha). 

What if you had to choose your favorite song from the tracklist?
It would probably be „My World, My Love, Paris“ and „Misunderstood“. Both of the songs are very lyric orientated, especially the first one. I also love the string arrangements for those two songs. In general I think the strings are the star of this album 🙂 

What is the Austrian music scene like at the moment? What do you listen to?
I appreciate the Austrian music scene a lot because it’s all very unique and different. At the moment I enjoy listening to Austrian artists like „Doppelfinger“, „Sophie Blenda“ or „Skofi“.

What inspired you in the composition of the album?
I like drawing inspiration from real life situations but I’m also always trying to look for inspiration outside of myself. With this record I tried to make up stories, draw inspiration from movies, conversations and stories that move me. But when it comes to describing feelings I always have to go inward. So the tracks do feel like me and my experiences. „Starstruck“ for example was inspired by the movie „Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind“ but I tried to make sense of the story by relating it to my own life, experiences and emotions. 

Future projects? A tour? Maybe in Italy?
This year will be all about touring the album and I hope that I will also make it to Italy this year 🙂
