NINA JUNE – Intervista alla cantante olandese

In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “SIDE A – OUR GARDEN” ho intervistato la cantante NINA JUNE.

Buongiorno Nina, piacere di averti sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Ho seguito il tuo live, durante il quale hai raccontato la nascita del disco in mezzo alla pandemia. Side A – Our garden è splendido, relativamente alla casa colonica del XVII secolo dove hai lavorato, cosa ci puoi raccontare?
Grazie mille 🙂 Ho trovato questa casa di campagna circa un anno fa in un piccolo villaggio nei Paesi Bassi. Sembrava così bello e di classe, ma quando lo guardavi più da vicino notavi anche che era lasciato andare. È diventata una metafora dello stato del mondo in cui viviamo. Siamo circondati da così tanta bellezza, ma se non ce ne prendiamo cura o non la rispettiamo abbastanza, tutto crollerà proprio davanti ai nostri occhi. Sembrava la location perfetta per creare il lato visivo di questo progetto. Per catturare sia la bellezza che il disordine. È anche ciò che abbiamo cercato di combinare nella produzione musicale, e uno degli argomenti di cui parlano le canzoni. 

Our garden parla di un momento particolare vissuto durante il lockdown, come sta adesso questo giardino? Possiamo interpretarlo come un rifugio per i momenti difficili durante la vita?
Il nostro giardino parla di come l’amore può espandersi in tempi difficili. Molte volte, una crisi è il terreno perfetto per la crescita. Our Garden segue una coppia che si sente persa e sola tra le mura della propria casa. Ma quando guardano fuori, vedono crescere i semi e le piante. Penso che durante il lockdown abbiamo compreso molte cose che non andavano bene per noi, né nella nostra vita personale, né su larga scala. Dal momento che ci è voluto molto più tempo di quanto ci aspettassimo per uscire, non abbiamo avuto altra scelta che volgere lo sguardo verso l’interno. Spero che noi, come esseri umani, abbiamo davvero imparato da questa crisi. Ma siamo testardi, non sono sicura al 100% che lo abbiamo fatto per davvero. 

I suoni al pianoforte nel disco sono sempre di Frank DeLange? Ti sei avvalsa di altri musicisti?
Sì, tutte le parti di pianoforte sono registrate da Frank DeLange. Anch’io sono un grande fan del suo lavoro solista e mi sento una privilegiata ad averlo nella mia band e a suonare nel disco. Lavoriamo insieme da molto tempo ormai e lui è diventato davvero il mio braccio destro musicale. La chitarra e le parti di basso sono state suonate da Toma Banjanin, un musicista londinese incredibilmente dotato. Anche lui è un artista, ha una band chiamata Geowulf. È anche un grande cantante e ha fatto alcuni backing vocal lungo la strada. Quindi, tutti gli archi sono stati arrangiati e registrati da Sally Herbert e dalla sua sezione d’archi. Sally è una musicista così potente, ha suonato con Björk, Radiohead, Mumford and Sons… Gli arrangiamenti degli archi sono diventati un’importante spina dorsale del disco. Ogni volta che ci inviava un nuovo pezzo del suo lavoro, ero sopraffatto dalla bellezza di esso. Ma il mio principale uomo in questo progetto è stato Duncan Mills, che ha prodotto e mixato tutte le canzoni. Ci siamo incontrati a Londra poco prima del primo lockdown e abbiamo avuto una connessione immediata. Penso che sia un visionario creativo e ha capito subito quello che volevo dire, a volte anche prima di me. Il progetto è diventato più della somma delle parti. Lavorare insieme a Dunc non è stato sempre facile, ma sicuramente era giusto. Mi ha dato così tanto spazio e fiducia per crescere come artista. 

Progetti futuri? Possiamo sperare in un tour?
Sì, puoi sperare in un tour! Da dicembre in poi, faremo un tour in Olanda, Germania e Regno Unito. Speriamo di visitare presto anche l’Italia. Non vedo l’ora davvero… E ci sarà molta più musica quest’anno che posso già dire!

Good morning Nina, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. I followed your live, during which you talked about the birth of the album in the midst of the pandemic. Side A – Our garden is splendid, relative to the 17th century farmhouse where you worked, what can you tell us?
Well thank you :). I found this landhouse about a year ago in a little village in The Netherlands. It looked so beautiful and classy, but when you looked closer it was also pretty worn out. It became a metaphor for the state of the world we’re living in. We’re surrounded by so much beauty, but if we don’t take care of it or respect it enough then things will fall apart right in front of our eyes. It felt like the perfect location to create the visual side of this project. To capture both the beauty and the mess. It’s also what we tried to combine in the musical production. It’s what the songs are about.

Our garden is about a particular moment during the lockdown, how is this garden now? Can we interpret it as a refuge for difficult times in life?
Our Garden is about how love can expand in troubled times. Many times, a crisis is the perfect soil for growth. Our Garden follows a couple that feels lost and lonely within the walls of their own home. But when they watch outside, they’re witnessing the seeds and plants grow. I think that during the lockdown a lot of things that weren’t right for us, either in our personal lives or on a bigger scale, have revealed themselves to us. Since it all took so much longer than we expected, we had no choice but to turn inwards. I hope that we as human beings have really learned from this crisis. But we’re headstrong, I’m not 100% sure we did.

Are the piano sounds on the record still by Frank DeLange? Did you use other musicians?
Yes, all piano parts are recorded by Frank DeLange. I’m such a fan of his solowork too and I feel privileged to have him in my band and playing on the record. We’ve been working together for a long time now and he really has become my musical right hand. The guitar and bassparts have been played by Toma Banjanin, an incredibly gifted musician from London. He’s an artist too, he has a band called Geowulf. He’s also a great singer and did some backingvocals along the way. Then, all strings have been arranged and recorded by Sally Herbert and her string section. Sally is such a heavyweight musician, arranging for Björk, Radiohead, Mumford and Sons… The string arrangements became an important backbone of the record.  Everytime she sent us a new piece of her work, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of it. But my main man on this project was Duncan Mills, who produced and mixed all the songs. We met in London right before the first lockdown and had an immediate connection. I think he’s a creative visionair and he immediately understood what I wanted to say, sometimes even sooner than I did. The project became more than the sum of the parts. Working together with Dunc was not always easy, but it sure was right. He gave me so much room and confidence to grow as an artist.

Future projects? Can we hope for a tour?
Yes, you can hope for a tour! From december on, we’re going to tour through The Netherlands, Germany and UK. Hopefully we will visit Italy soon too. I can’t wait really… And there’s going to be a lot more music this year I can already tell!
