MOON SHOT – Intervista all’alternative rock band finlandese
In occasione dell’uscita di “The Power” (reaper Entertainment), secondo album in studio dell’alternative rock band finlandese Moon Shot, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare il chitarrista, compositore e produttore Jussi Ylikoski e il cantante Ville Malja.
Ciao e benvenuti su Tuttorock, parliamo di questo nuovo album, “The Power”, cosa significa per voi questo titolo?
JUSSI: Ciao! Grazie! Per me “The Power” significa il tuo potere interiore che arriva seguendo la tua passione, ispirazione e la spinta che ottieni così facendo.
VILLE: È qualcosa che ti fa scalare le montagne di tutti i giorni. Quella spinta e quel coraggio straordinari che ottieni nei momenti in cui non pensi troppo.
Che feedback avete ricevuto dai singoli pubblicati finora?
JUSSI: Molto positivi. La gente sembra essere molto entusiasta di questi nuovi singoli. E la quantità di passaggi radiofonici, soprattutto in Germania, è andata oltre i nostri sogni.
VILLE: Inoltre, una cosa davvero interessante è che ci sono stati molti feedback come “so che questo è Moon Shot”, ma suona comunque diverso”. Questo è un qualcosa che volevamo ottenere. Arrivare al livello successivo mantenendo comunque gli ingredienti originali, come la scrittura orecchiabile e i testi vulnerabili.
Come nasce solitamente una canzone dei Moon Shot?
JUSSI: Inizia nel mio studio dove scrivo, produco e registro una demo strumentale. La mando a Ville e lui ci aggiunge sopra le sue idee per la parte vocale e i testi e me lo rimanda. Poi di solito uso le sue parti vocali come nuova fonte di ispirazione e sviluppo e produco maggiormente la canzone. Poi andiamo avanti e indietro e coltiviamo la canzone. A questo punto inviamo la demo anche a Mikko e Henkka, che aggiungono le loro idee e gli input.
Come vi siete incontrati e quando è nata l’idea di formare i Moon Shot?
JUSSI: Io e la precedente band del batterista Mikko, i Disco Ensemble, abbiamo deciso di scioglierci nel 2018. Sentivo di voler ancora creare e suonare un po’ di rock n roll, quindi ho chiesto a Mikko di formare una nuova band con me e lui ha risposto positivamente. Alla fine del 2018 ho deciso di chiamare Ville e gli ho chiesto di unirsi come cantante. Quella telefonata durò qualcosa come 3 ore, Ville era d’accordo. Abbiamo cercato la soluzione migliore per il basso per alcuni mesi e, nell’estate del 2019, ho deciso di chiedere a Henkka dei Children of Bodom. A Henkka sono piaciute molto le nuove demo che avevamo già realizzato e ha detto di sì. Successivamente abbiamo deciso il nome e così sono nati i Moon Shot!

Qual è il vostro più grande sogno artistico?
JUSSI: trovare significato e passione nel creare e suonare musica e rimanere ispirati. Il resto viene di seguito, qualunque esso sia.
VILLE: Questo è il mio sogno. Tutti i giorni, non sto scherzando.
C’è uno spettacolo dei Moon Shot che ricordate particolarmente?
JUSSI: RockFest 2022 in Finlandia, Hyvinkää. Il primo grande concerto in un festival per i Moon Shot. Grande pubblico. La band era in fiamme! Bei tempi!
VILLE: Per me lo spettacolo tutto esaurito con Danko Jones ad Amburgo, Markthalle, qualche tempo fa. Ricordo quando mi trovavo sotto una doccia calda dopo lo spettacolo e pensavo che non potesse andare meglio di così in paradiso, hehehe!
Avete già programmato un tour?
JUSSI: Sì, molti concerti nei festival in Finlandia e in Europa centrale e, nell’autunno del 2024, un tour nei club sempre in Finlandia e in Europa centrale.

C’è tantissima merda in questo mondo in questo momento, ma insieme possiamo cambiarlo. Non deve essere più grande di un sorriso di uno sconosciuto che spinge il primo felice tassello di un domino di cose belle. Sappiamo tutti nel profondo cosa è giusto, quindi facciamolo.

On the occasion of the release of “The Power” (reaper Entertainment), the second studio album of the Finnish alternative rock band Moon Shot, I had the pleasure of interviewing the guitarist, composer and producer Jussi Ylikoski and the singer Ville Malja.
Hi and welcome to Tuttorock, let’s talk about this new album, “The Power”, what does this title mean to you?
JUSSI: Hello! Thank You! For me “The Power” means your inner power that comes through following your passion and inspiration and the drive that you get by doing so.
VILLE: It’s something that makes you to climb up the everyday mountains. That amazing push and courage you get at times when you don’t think about it too much.
What feedback have you received from the singles released so far?
JUSSI: Very positive. People seem to be very keen on these new singles. And the amount of radio plays with the new singles we have received especially in Germany have been beyond our dreams.
VILLE: Also one really cool thing is that there’s been lots of feedback that ”I knew this is Moon Shot” but still it sounds different”. That’s really something we wanted achieve. To make it to the next level but still keep the original incredients there, like catchy songwriting and vulnerable lyrics.
How does a Moon Shot song usually come about?
JUSSI: It starts in my studio where I write, produce and record an instrumental demo. I send it to Ville and he adds his vocal topline ideas and lyrics on top of it and sends it back to me. Then I usually use his vocal parts as a new source of inspiration and write and produce the song more. Then we go back and forth and cultivate the song. At this point we also send the demo to Mikko and Henkka, who give their ideas and input for the song.
How did you meet and when did the idea of forming Moon Shot come about?
JUSSI: Me and the drummer Mikko’s previous band Disco Ensemble decided to call it quits in 2018. I felt I still wanted to create and play some more rock n roll so I asked Mikko to form a new band with me. And Mikko was in. Late 2018 I decided to call Ville and asked him to join as a vocalist. That phone call lasted for something like 3 hours. Ville was in. We searched for the best fit for bass for some months. Summer 2019 decided to ask Henkka from Children of Bodom. Henkka really liked the fresh demos we had already made and he said yes. After that we decided on the name Moon Shot and so Moon Shot was born!
Who are your favorite artists from the past and which are your favorite artists from today?

What is your greatest artistic dream?
JUSSI: to find meaning and passion in creating and playing music and staying inspired. The rest follows, whatever that is.
VILLE: This is my dream. Everyday, no kidding.
Is there a show of Moon Shot that you particularly remember?
JUSSI: RockFest 2022 in Finland, Hyvinkää. The first big festival show for Moon Shot. Big crowd. The band was on fire! Great times!
VILLE: For me the sold out show with Danko Jones in Hamburg, Markthalle some time ago. I remember when I stood under hot shower after the show and I thought it can’t get better than this in heaven, hehehe!
Have you already planned a tour?
JUSSI: Yes, quite a lot of festival shows in Finland and mid-Europe and in the fall 2024 a club tour in Finland and in mid Europe.
