MATT MALTESE – Il nuovo EP “MADHOUSE”
In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo EP “madhouse”, in programma venerdì 7 agosto, ho intervistato il giovane cantautore italo-inglese Matt Maltese. Matt ha già pubblicato due album di successo, “Bad Contestant” nel 2018 e “Krystal” nel 2019, ed ha fatto un tour come headliner negli Stati Uniti.
Ciao Matt, prima di tutto benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come stai in generale?
Ciao! Sto abbastanza bene grazie, il massimo possibile in un momento come questo… sto scrivendo molto.
Hai sempre parlato molto della solitudine nelle tue canzoni, come hai vissuto il periodo di lockdown?
Penso che sia una cosa molto diversa l’essere costretto all’isolamento piuttosto che sceglierlo. Sono riuscito come molti altri a superarlo provando a prenderlo giorno per giorno e non pensando al futuro, il quale è ovviamente incerto.
Alcune delle tue canzoni del 2018 sembrano molto attuali, pensi che abbiano potuto aiutare molte persone a superare meglio questo periodo?
Lo spero! Ad essere onesti, è stato molto strano avere una canzone apocalittica come “as the world caves in” (mentre il mondo crolla – ndr) in un momento come questo, è una sorta di commento parodistico su due terribili leader occidentali che hanno messo insieme fine al mondo e lo hanno fatto diventare diverso ma non necessariamente molto confortante. Ma anche, senza pensarci troppo, qualunque cosa aiuti qualcuno essa aiuta quel qualcuno e anche per me quella canzone non ha nulla a che fare con la storia parodistica che si è evoluta, si tratta solo di trovare qualcuno che ami per affrontare la fine del mondo.
Il tuo EP “madhouse” uscirà il 7 agosto, l’ ho ascoltato e lo trovo molto bello, quando hai scritto le canzoni?
Grazie! Le ho scritte negli ultimi anni: sono un po’ una fusione di molti periodi diversi.
Dove trovi l’ispirazione per scrivere nuove canzoni?
Non ne ho idea, vivo solamente cose e sentimenti e canto su di esse. Vorrei davvero sapere dove esattamente trovarla.
Le tue canzoni hanno sempre qualcosa di vintage (è un complimento, apprezzo molto questa cosa), quali artisti hanno influenzato maggiormente il tuo modo di comporre e qual è stata la tua formazione musicale?
Sono cresciuto ascoltando Leonard Cohen e molto jazz. Sono davvero cresciuto con l’amore per gli anni ’70 e solo ora mi rendo conto di quanto ciò abbia influenzato tutto.
L’anno scorso hai fatto un tour negli Stati Uniti, com’è stata quella esperienza? C’è qualche episodio particolare di cui vuoi parlarmi?
È stato fantastico! Ad essere sincero, è stato tutto molto memorabile… (scusa, lo so che è una risposta insoddisfacente).
Vivi a Londra ma hai origini italiane, hai mai vissuto in Italia?
Ho vissuto a Milano da bambino per alcuni anni. Non ho molti ricordi di quel periodo, ma ricordo che ci hanno insegnato a scuola a non bere dal bicchiere di qualcun altro! Adoro l’Italia con tutto il cuore.
Sei molto giovane, hai 23 anni, hai un sogno particolare sia nella musica che nella vita in generale?
Cerco di non pensare troppo a lungo, in questo momento so che mi piacerebbe solo fare album regolarmente e questo è quello che mi fa andare avanti. Il mio “sogno” è quello di poter continuare a farlo, per il momento, e sta funzionando.
Hai già pianificato alcune nuove date o stai aspettando un miglioramento della situazione globale?
Sono in attesa di un miglioramento! Ma davvero non vedo l’ora di tornare in tour.

On the occasion of the release of the new EP “madhouse”, scheduled for Friday 7 August, I interviewed the young Italian-English singer-songwriter Matt Maltese. Matt has already released two hit albums, “Bad Contestant” in 2018 and “Krystal” in 2019, and toured as a headliner in the United States.
Hi Matt, first of all welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how are you in general?
Hi! Im pretty well thank you, as well as can be in a time like this.. writing a lot.
You always talked a lot about loneliness in your songs, how did you experience the lockdown?
I think it was very different being forced into isolation rather than choosing it. I managed like many other just by trying to take it day by day and not thinking about the future, which is all uncertain of course.
Some of your songs from 2018 sound very current, do you think your songs could have helped many people to better overcome this period?
I hope so! To be honest it’s been very strange to have an apocalyptic song like ‘as the world caves in’ have a moment in a time like this, it was really a sort of parodic comment on two awful western leaders ending the world together and for it to now become more literal in a different way is not necessarily very comforting. But also, without overthinking it, whatever helps someone helps someone and even to me that song has nothing to do with the parodic story it evolved around anymore anyway, it’s just about finding someone you love for the end of the world.
Your EP “madhouse” will be released on August 7th, which I listened to and I find it very nice, when did you write the songs?
Thank you! I wrote them over the past few years – they’re a bit of an amalgamation of a lot of different periods of time.
Where do you find inspiration to write new songs?
I have no idea – it’s just experiencing things and feelings and singing about them. I wish i knew where exactly to find it.
Your songs always have something vintage (it’s a compliment, I really appreciate this thing), which artists have influenced your way of composing the most and what was your musical education?
I grew up listening to Leonard Cohen and a lot of jazz. I really grew up having a love for the 70s and I’m only now realizing how much that influenced everything.
Last year you did a tour in the USA, how was that experience? Is there any particular episode you want to tell me about?
It was so great! To be honest it was all very memorable.. (sorry I know that’s an unsatisfying answer).
You live in London but you have Italian origins, have you ever lived in Italy?
I lived in Milan when I was a kid for a few years. I don’t have loads of memories of it but I do remember they would teach us at school not to drink from someone else’s glass! I love Italy with all my heart.
You are very young, you are 23 years old, do you have a particular dream both in music and in life in general?
I try not to think too long term – right now I know that I’d just like to be making albums regularly and that’s kind of what keeps me going. My ‘dream’ is to just be able to continue doing that for the time being and it working out.
Have you already planned some new dates or are you waiting for an improvement of the global situation?
Waiting for an improvement! But I really can’t wait to tour again.
