MAJA SHINING – Intervista alla frontwoman dei Forever Still sul tour con i Lacuna …
Ho sempre pensato che i Lacuna Coil fossero una band straordinaria ed andare in tour con loro me lo ha definitivamente confermato. Abbiamo fatto un grande tour con grandi persone, è stato bellisismo, ed ho avuto l’ impressione che la maggior parte dei fan di Lacuna Coil abbiano gradito la nostra musica. I Lacuna Coil erano anche una delle band che i nostri fan più volevano vedere, riuscire a realizzare tutto questo è stato incredibile.
L’anno scorso eravamo assieme in un piccolo e delizioso pub, l’Altrove, a Pontoglio (BS), oggi sui palchi più importanti d’Europa, cosa è successo?
Ah ah, vero, siamo stati lì ed anche in quella location è stato meraviglioso! Abbiamo lavorato molto duramente da allora, abbiamo collaborato con l’etichetta rock e metal più grandi del mondo duro, la Nuclear Blast, con il quale abbiamo pubblicato il nostro primo album, Tied down, che stiamo promuovendo in tour ora. Abbiamo anche collaborato con un’agenzia di booking, che ci ha aiutato a realizzare il tour con i Lacuna Coil.
Ci sono stati cambiamenti nella lineup?
Solo dal vivo, siamo ancora Mikkel e io in studio insieme ad alcuni musicisti ospiti, come è sempre stato. Abbiamo scelto di lavorare nel modo più indipendente possibile, che ci permette di operare senza compromettere la musica in qualsiasi modo.
Hai un nuovo disco, finalmente il full lenght che Ti chiedevo da sempre, hai introdotto qualcosa di nuovo nel tuo sound?
Quando abbiamo iniziato a scrivere Tied down, abbiamo capito subito che questo sarebbe stato diverso. Avevamo in mente il concept su un individuo alle prese con la depressione, l’ansia e la inutilità, che sa trovare la speranza e finalmente liberarsi da tutte le cose negative. In linea con questa idea, abbiamo voluto suonare l’album in maniera forte e cruda, e quindi abbiamo scelto di registrare su apparecchiature analogiche. Tutto è seminale ed istintivo, abbiamo usato le prime takes senza ripensamenti o rielaborazioni.
L’importanza che dai da sempre ai tuoi bellissimi video ha prodotto anche in questo caso qualcosa di straordinario?
Abbiamo fatto i nostri video fin dall’inizio e questo è diventato una parte importante della nostra espressione artistica. Fortunatamente la Nuclear Blast amava quello che abbiamo fatto noi finora e abbiamo continuato facendo i nostri video, dal momento che abbiamo firmato ne abbiamo rilasciato uno per Miss Madness ed anche per Save Me.
Hai preparato qualcosa di particolare per i live di questo tour?
Certamente! Abbiamo scelto di portare su una nuova canzone, che non è nemmeno stato ancora rilasciato. I fans che vengono ai live avranno un assaggio del futuro suono dei Forever Still.
Cosa stai ascoltando in questo periodo?
Ascoltiamo tanta musica diversa mentre siamo in tour, dato che spendiamo così tanto tempo nel furgone. Attualmente abbiamo il nuovo album degli In Flames che gira in background.
Progetti futuri terminato il tour con i Lacuna Coil?
Stiamo progettando un altro tour di supporto in primavera e festivals durante l’estate. In mezzo dovremo anche iniziare a scrivere il nostro prossimo album, che speriamo di rilasciare già verso la fine del 2017 o all’inizio del 2018. Questo inverno ci metteremo anche al lavoro su un nuovo video musicale per l’album Tied Down.

Hi Maja, my sister in rock, years ago when we met you told me of your passion for Lacuna Coil and Cristina Scabbia, as I feel now to go on tour with your idols?
I’ve always believed, Lacuna Coil would be an amazing band for us to tour with and this tour has definitely confirmed that suspicion. We’ve had such a great tour with some awesome people and it has been my impression that most fans of Lacuna Coil have been very fond of our music as well. Lacuna Coil was also one of the bands our own fans most wanted to see us tour with, so it was so great that we could make it happen!
Last year you were in u small lovely pub in a small town of Bergamo, today on the most important stages in Europe, what happened?
We were and we had a wonderful time there as well! We’ve been working very hard and since then, we’ve teamed up with the world’s biggest hard rock and metal label, Nuclear Blast, with whom we released our debut album Tied Down, which we’re out promoting on tour now. We’ve also teamed up with a booking agency, who helped us sort out the tour with Lacuna Coil.
There have been changes in the lineup?
Only live, it’s still Mikkel and I in the studio together with some guest musicians, like it has always been. We have chosen to work as independently as possible, which allows us to to work without compromising the music in any way.
You have a new album, finally the full length which you have always wondered, you have introduced something new in your sound?
When we started writing Tied Down, we quickly realised that this was going to be different. We had a concept in mind about an individual struggling through depression, anxiety and worthlessness and finding hope and finally breaking free from all the negative things holding them down and in keeping with that idea, we wanted the album to sound like everything was a little broken and falling apart. We chose to record on analog equipment, because we wanted it raw; everything was initial instincts, first takes, no second-guessing and what happened, was what got on tape.
The importance it has always your great videos produced again something extraordinary?
We’ve done our own videos since the beginning and it has become a big part of our artistic expression. Luckily Nuclear Blast loved what we’ve been doing ourselves so far and we’ve continued making our own videos, since we got signed and have released one for both Miss Madness and Save Me.
You have prepared something special for the live shows of this tour?
We have! We have chosen to bring on a brand new song, which hasn’t even been released yet. Fans who come out to the live shows will get a sneak peek into the future sound of Forever Still.
What are you listening to these days?
We listen to so much different music these days, while we’re on tour, since we spend so much time in the van. Currently we have the new In Flames album running in the background.
Future projects finished the tour with Lacuna Coil?
We’re planning on another support tour in the spring and festivals over the summer and in between that, we’ll be writing for our next album, which we hope to release already in late 2017 or early 2018. This winter we’ll also be working on a new music video for the “Tied Down”-album.
