LILY KERSHAW – Intervista sul nuovo album “Arcadia”
In occasione del suo secondo album, “Arcadia”, ho avuto la possibilità di intervistare la cantautrice americana Lily Kershaw.
Ciao Lily, benvenuta sulle pagine di Tuttorock, prima di tutto come ti senti ora che è uscito il tuo secondo album “Arcadia”?
Sono così felice ed emozionata del fatto che “Arcadia” sia uscito in tutto il mondo!
Ho letto che all’improvviso ti è venuta in mente la parola Arcadia, vero?
Ho iniziato ad essere ossessionata dalla parola Arcadia all’inizio di quest’anno. Non riuscivo a smettere di pensare a quella parola. Adoro il modo in cui suona e il significato che ha e volevo creare un album che le corrispondesse sonoramente.
Come nascono le tue canzoni? Pensi prima al testo o alle melodie?
Quando mi siedo per scrivere alla chitarra o al piano, le parole e la melodia di solito si incontrano allo stesso tempo. Scrivo testi anche durante il giorno e registro piccole idee melodiche nelle note vocali sul mio iPhone.
E della collaborazione con il tuo collega Jon Bryant nella canzone “The Sea”, che cosa mi dici?
Ho adorato scrivere questa canzone con Jon. È successo così magnificamente e organicamente. Sono così felice che l’abbia cantata con me nel disco.
Nella canzone “Myth of New York” menzioni i luoghi della Grande Mela, cosa significa quella città per un americano?
New York è la città americana per eccellenza. Tanto per citare Frank Sinatra, “if I can make it there/ I’ll make it anywhere”. Farlo a New York City penso che sia sempre stato ed è ancora, in ogni modo, il sogno americano.
Quando hai deciso di diventare una cantautrice e lavorare nella musica?
Ho iniziato a scrivere piccole canzoni ad appena 6 anni e sono diventata completamente ossessionata dalla scrittura delle canzoni una volta che ho iniziato a imparare gli accordi della chitarra a 13 anni. Ho capito di voler diventare una cantautrice professionista quando avevo 18 anni.
Suoni molti strumenti molto bene, qual è stata la tua istruzione musicale?
Sono innanzitutto una cantante. Suono anche chitarra e pianoforte, ma la chitarra è il mio strumento principale tra i due. Sono stata prevalentemente autodidatta su tutta la linea. Ci sono altri strumenti che posso prendere in mano e suonare mentre sono in studio ed è sempre divertente!
La prima e l’ultima nota dell’album sono le stesse, è un modo per dire che le cose si inseguono costantemente?
No, per me significa che le cose sono sempre intrinsecamente connesse e che inizio e fine sono indissolubilmente legati.
Parli molto del concetto del tempo, cosa fai nel tempo libero quando non suoni? Hai qualche hobby?
Adoro passare il tempo con gli amici, fare passeggiate nella natura, vedere film!
Farai un tour per promuovere l’album?
Suonerò a Parigi il 29 gennaio e a Londra il primo di febbraio. Altre date arriveranno durante l’anno.
E quando verrai in Italia a suonare?
Spero di suonare anche in Italia all’inizio del nuovo anno!

On the occasion of his second album, “Arcadia”, I had the chance to interview the American singer-songwriter Lily Kershaw.
Hi Lily, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, first of all, how do you feel now that your second Arcadia album is out?
I am so happy and excited that Arcadia is out in the world!
I read that the word Arcadia suddenly came to your mind, is that it?
I become obsessed with the word Arcadia earlier this year. I couldn’t stop thinking about the word. I just love the way it sounds and the meaning of the word and I wanted to create an album that to me sonically matched the word Arcadia.
How are your songs born? Do you think of text or melodies first?
When I sit down to write on the guitar or piano the words and melody usually come together at the same time. I also write lyrics down throughout the day and record little melody ideas in the voice notes on my iPhone.
And about the collaboration with your colleague Jon Bryant in the song “The Sea” what do you say?
I loved writing this song with Jon. It happened so beautifully and organically. I am so happy he sang it with me on the record.
In the song “Myth of New York” you mention the places of “The Big Apple”, what does that city mean for an American?
New York City is the ultimate American city. To quote Frank Sinatra “if I can make it there/ I’ll make it anywhere.” Making it in New York City I think has always been and still is in many ways the American dream.
When did you decide to become a songwriter and work in music?
I started writing little songs as young as 6 and become fully obsessed with writing songs once I started to learn chords on guitar at 13. I knew I wanted to be a professional singer/songwriter by the time I was 18.
You play many instruments very well, what was your musical education?
I am first and foremost a singer. I play guitar and piano as well but guitar is my primary instrument between the two. I was predominantly self taught across the board. There are other instruments I can pick up and play around with while in the studio and that is always fun!
The first and last note of the album are the same, is it a way of saying that things are constantly chasing each other?
No, to me it means that things are inherently connected always and that beginnings and endings are inextricably linked.
You talk a lot about the concept of time, what do you do in your free time when you don’t play? Do you have any hobbies?
I love spending time with friends. Taking walks in nature. Seeing movies!
Will you do a tour to promote the album?
I am playing in Paris on January 29th and in London on February 1st. More dates will come throughout the year.
And when will you come to Italy to play?
Hopefully I will be playing in Italy early in the new year as well!
