KOIAI – Intervista alle quattro eccezionali musiciste giappnesi

Quattro giovanissime ragazze, eccellenti musiciste, Li.sa-, Hazuki, Kotono e Kanade, insieme sono le Koiai, una band che ama il pop, il rock e l’heavy metal e fondono il tutto nei loro brani. Fino ad ora due EP e un Blu-Ray e un terzo EP in arrivo. Ne ho parlato con tutte e quattro in quest’intervista.

Ciao ragazze e benvenute su Tuttorock. Dove, come, quando e perché nascono le Koiai?
Li-sa-X: Grazie per averci ospitate!! Innanzitutto, Hazuki e io eravamo in una band chiamata Li-sa-X BAND con un’altra cantante. Nel 2022, la cantante ha deciso di lasciare la band e la band si è sciolta per un periodo. Hazuki e io abbiamo iniziato a cercare nuove cantanti e abbiamo contattato Kotono, che conoscevamo, per collaborare a una cover su YouTube. Ha funzionato così bene che abbiamo deciso di formare una nuova band, i KOIAI.

 Prima eravate un trio, due chitarre e una voce, ora siete un quartetto, c’è un
batterista, perché questa decisione?
Hazuki: Inizialmente avevamo pianificato di scrivere canzoni come trio e di assumere una batterista e una bassista solo quando necessario per le esibizioni dal vivo, cosa che abbiamo fatto per il primo anno, ma la batteria di Kanade è stata parte integrante dllei KOIAI fin dai primi tour, ed è diventata un membro ufficiale. Le ho offerto la possibilità di unirsi alle KOIAI come membro ufficiale, e ha accettato.

Anche una bassista in futuro?
Kotono: In questo momento, Wakazaemon suona dal vivo per noi come membro di supporto regolare, è fantastico, ma è molto impegnata con altre band e sessioni..
Non sappiamo cosa accadrà in futuro.

Ora una domanda per ognuno di voi, Lisa-X è molto attiva sui social media e ha già fatto alcune cose a suo nome, quindi chiedo a Kotono, Hazuki e Kanade, cosa facevate prima di far parte delle Koiai?
Hazuki: Ho lavorato con Li-sa-X nella band Li-sa-X BAND, il predecessore delle KOIAI. Parallelamente, sono anche in una band chiamata NEMOPHILA.
Kotono: Ho fatto esperienza come ballerina di supporto per vari artisti e in seguito sono diventata membro degli IRONBUNNY.
Kanade: Sono stata coinvolta in varie attività come concerti da solista, concerti con la mia altra band MUSES, concerti di sessione, supporto, ecc. Sono stata anche coinvolta come membro di supporto delle KOIAI. 

Ma qual è stata la vostra reazione quando vi è stato proposto?
Hazuki: Ho avuto l’opportunità di supportare Li-sa-X al suo concerto da solista circa 6 anni fa e siamo amiche da molto tempo. Mi sento molto onorata di poter suonare in una band con lei mentre continua a crescere come persona e come chitarrista. A volte mi sento come una madre LOL.
Kotono: Dal momento che avevamo membri con radici musicali diverse, ho pensato che avremmo potuto fare qualcosa di nuovo. Quindi ero molto emozionata. Ero felice di poter lavorare di nuovo come una band.
Kanade: Sono stata molto felice di poter lavorare come membro delle KOIAI, non come supporto!

 Due EP, “Deep Love” e Deep Indigo”, come sono nate le canzoni?
Li-sa-X: La musica è scritta da me e Hazuki, ognuno di noi lavora separatamente. Una volta abbiamo provato a riunire tutti i membri per comporre una canzone insieme, ma non ha funzionato. Non so perché. Immagino che parliamo troppo LOL. I testi sono scritti da me e Kotono.

Perché i titoli “Deep Love” e “Deep Indigo”? Il loro significato e il significato dei testi.
Kotono: La pronuncia KOIAI significa “indaco profondo” e “amore profondo” in giapponese. Proprio come si legge.

Dopo due EP, state preparando un album completo? Potete anticipare qualcosa?
Kanade: Attualmente stiamo lavorando al nostro terzo EP. Questo sarà il mio primo pezzo da quando sono diventata un membro ufficiale e uscirà verso agosto.

Raccontatemi ora del Blue Ray appena uscito.
Hazuki: Questo Blu-ray contiene la nostra prima esibizione dal vivo da soliste in Giappone lo scorso ottobre. Sono incluse le 20 canzoni complete eseguite, comprese le sezioni da solista e le cover. È stato pubblicato in quantità limitate, ma la risposta ha superato le aspettative ed è andato esaurito non appena è stato messo in vendita. Anche il prossimo spettacolo di agosto sarà in Blu-ray, ma dobbiamo produrne molto di più.

Perché non anche in CD?
Li-sa-X: Si tratta di lavori in Blu-ray, vero? La nostra intenzione era di fargli vedere prima il nostro video dal vivo, ma onestamente non eravamo sicuri che ci sarebbe stata richiesta per un album live in CD. Inoltre, il gran numero di cover ha reso difficile immaginare molte opzioni a causa del tempo necessario per ottenere le licenze e delle non trascurabili royalty.

Come nasce una delle vosre canzoni, da un testo o da un riff?
Li-sa-X: Ci sono diversi modi per farlo. Può essere sviluppato da un riff, oppure può essere creato dalla melodia principale della voce. Spesso “riarmonizzo” partendo da una semplice bozza una volta realizzata. Ciò significa applicare accordi diversi alla melodia.

Lisa-X e Hazuki, come dividete le parti di chitarra?
Hazuki: Le intenzioni del compositore sono importanti nel modo in cui le assegniamo. Di conseguenza, io mi sento dal lato sinistro e Lisa si sente dal lato destro.

Cosa ci sarà nel futuro delle Koiai?
Kanade: Come ho detto prima, pubblicheremo il nostro terzo EP verso l’estate. Ci saranno anche dei video musicali. Inoltre, lo spettacolo di agosto potrebbe essere pubblicato in Blu-ray verso la fine dell’anno.

Il vero significato del nome Koiai?
Kotono: Anche questo è stato menzionato prima. KOIAI significa “indaco profondo” e “amore profondo”.

Quanto è importante per voi suonare dal vivo?
Li-sa-X: Potrebbe sembrare un po’ drammatico, ma considero un’esibizione dal vivo come “condividere la vita” con il pubblico.

Suonerete in Italia in futuro?
Hazuki: Non abbiamo ancora piani concreti, ma abbiamo ricevuto diverse richieste da promoter europei. Non vediamo l’ora di suonare in Italia!

Le influenze musicali di ognuno di voi?
Li-sa-X: La mia più grande influenza è stata il mio mentore, Paul Gilbert. Tuttavia, ci sono varie influenze come Polyphia e Dirty Loops.
Kanade: Sono stata molto influenzata dagli artisti fusion con cui ho avuto l’opportunità di suonare fin da bambina.
Kotono: Ascoltavo musica R&B e gospel perché mi venivano assegnate canzoni per le mie lezioni di canto quando ero al liceo. Penso che questa musica mi abbia influenzato perché spesso ballavo anche la musica dance durante le lezioni di danza.
Hazuki: Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom e Polyphia sono le mie influenze.

Avete altre passioni oltre alla musica?
Li-sa-X: Ultimamente mi piace cucinare in modo creativo.
Kanade: Adoro i giochi ritmici e quelli musicali.
Kotono: Sono appassionata di allenamento muscolare. L’esercizio fisico mi aiuta a resettare la mente, ed è anche un buon modo per cambiare ritmo. Di recente ho anche iniziato a frequentare Pilates.
Hazuki: Mi piace cucinare e giocare ai videogiochi.

Hi girls and welcome to Tuttorock. Where, how, when and why do Koiai arise?
Li-sa-X: Thanks for having us!! First of all, Hazuki and I used to be in a band called Li-sa-X BAND with other singer. In 2022, the singer decided to quit the band and the band disbanded for a time. Hazuki and I started looking for new singers and approached Kotono, whom we knew, to collaborate on a cover song on YouTube. This worked out so well that we decided to form a new band KOIAI.

Before you were a trio, two guitars and a voice, now you are a quartet, there is a
drummer, why this decision?
Hazuki: We initially planned to write songs as a trio and hire a drummer and bass player only when needed for live performances, which we did for the first year, but Kanade’s drumming has been an integral part of KOIAI since the first tours, and she became an official I offered her a chance to join KOIAI as an official member, and she accepted.

Also a bass player in the future?
Kotono: Right now, Wakazaemon is playing live for us as a regular support member is great, but she is very busy with other bands and sessions.. We do not know what will happen in the future.

Now a question for each of you, Lisa-X is very active on social media and has already done some things in her name, so I ask Kotono, Hazuki and Kanade, what did you do before being part of Koiai?
Hazuki: I worked with Li-sa-X in the band Li-sa-X BAND, the predecessor of KOIAI. In parallel, I am also in a band called NEMOPHILA.
Kotono: I experienced being a back-up dancer for various artists and later became a member of IRONBUNNY.
Kanade: I was involved in various activities such as solo gigs, gigs with my other band MUSES, session gigs, support, etc. I was also involved as a support member of KOIAI.

But what was your reaction when it was proposed to you?
Hazuki: I had the opportunity to support Li-sa-X at her solo concert about 6 years ago, and we have been friends for a very long time. I feel very honored to be able to play in a band with her as she continues to grow as a person and as a guitarist. Sometimes I feel like a mother LOL.
Kotono: Since we had members with different musical roots, I thought we could do something new. So I was very excited. I was happy to be able to work as a band again.
Kanade: I was very happy to be able to work as a member of KOIAI members, not as a support!

Two EPs, “Deep Love” and Deep Indigo”, how were the songs born?
Li-sa-X: The music is written by myself and Hazuki, with each of us working separately. We once tried to get all the members together to compose a song together, but it did not work. I don’t know why. I guess we talk too much LOL. The lyrics are written by myself and Kotono.

Why the title “Deep Love” and “Deep Indigo”? Their meaning and the meaning of the lyrics.
Kotono: The pronunciation KOIAI means “deep indigo” and “deep love” in Japanese. Just as it reads.

After two EPs are you preparing a complete album? Can you anticipate something?
Kanade: We are currently working on our third EP. This will be my first piece since I became an official member and will be released around August.

Tell me now about the Blue Ray that has just been released.
Hazuki: This Blu-ray contains our first solo live performance in Japan last October. The complete 20 songs performed, including solo sections and covers, are included. It was released in limited quantities, but the response exceeded expectations and sold out as soon as it went on sale. The upcoming August show will also be on Blu-ray, but we need to produce a lot more.

Why not also on CD?
Li-sa-X: That’s about Blu-ray works, isn’t it? Our intention was to have them see our live video first, but honestly, we weren’t sure if there would be a demand for a live album CD. Besides, the large number of cover songs made it difficult to envision many options because of the time required to obtain licenses and the not-insignificant royalty fees.

How does one of your songs come about, from a text or from a riff?
Li-sa-X: There are several ways to do this. It can be developed from a riff, or it can be created from the main melody of the vocal. I often “re-harmonize” from a simple draft once made. This means applying different chords to the melody.

Lisa-X and Hazuki, how do you divide the guitar parts?
Hazuki: The composer’s intentions are important in how we assign them. As a result, I am heard from the left side and Lisa is heard from the right side.

What will be in the future of Koiai?
Kanade: As I mentioned earlier, we will be releasing our third EP around the summer. There will be music videos released as well. Also, the August show may be released on Blu-ray around the end of the year.

The meaning of the name Koiai?
Kotono: This was also brought up earlier. KOIAI means “deep indigo” and “deep love.”

How important is playing live for you?
Li-sa-X: This may sound a bit dramatic, but I consider a live performance to be “sharing life” with the audience.

Will you play in Italy in the future?
Hazuki: We don’t have any concrete plans yet, but we have received several inquiries from European promoters. We are looking forward to playing in Italy!

The musical influences of each of you?
Li-sa-X: My biggest influence has been my mentor, Paul Gilbert. However, there are various influences such as Polyphia and Dirty Loops.
Kanade: I was greatly influenced by the fusion artists that I had the opportunity to play with since I was a child.
Kotono: I used to listen to R&B and gospel music because they were assigned songs for my singing lessons when I was in high school. I think these music influenced me because I often danced to dance music in dance lessons as well.
Hazuki: Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, and Polyphia are influences.

Do you have other passions outside of music?
Li-sa-X: I’m into creative cooking these days.
Kanade: I love rhythm games and music games.
Kotono: I am passionate about muscle training. Physical exercise helps me to reset my mind, and it is also good for a change of pace. Recently, I have also started attending Pilates.
Hazuki: I like baking and playing video games.
