JAMBINAI – Intervista alla band sud-coreana
JAMBINAI, la band rock di Seoul – in grado di creare connessioni tra passato e presente, Occidente e Oriente – arriva finalmente in Italia per un’unica data in occasione del Tour Europeo, l’11 maggio all’Estragon Club di Bologna, insieme al duo indie-rock giapponese MOJA.

Ciao e piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock, è la prima band che conosciamo in arrivo dalla Corea del Sud, ne siamo molto felici. Come è la scena musicale nel vostro paese? Quali sono i generi e le band che hanno il maggiore successo e ascolto nel vostro paese?
Piacere di conoscerti. La Corea è conosciuta come K-pop, ma esistono molti tipi diversi di musica. La band più famosa come band in questi giorni è Silica Gel. Non pensiamo che un genere specifico sia popolare perché ci sono molti artisti che fanno generi diversi.
Voi come vi siete conosciuti? Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti musicali?
Tre vecchi amici che si sono laureati in musica tradizionale e hanno fondato una band. non ricordiamo di aver ascoltato nulla insieme, ma ricordiamo di aver detto: “Non facciamo le cose che erano popolari, ma quelle che non andavano di moda in quel momento”.
Avete avuto difficoltà ad esportare la vostra musica all’estero? Avete già partecipato a tour o festival in Europa e America?
In media, ci esibiamo più di 50 volte all’estero ogni anno. Abbiamo più date in Europa che in Corea. Da quando abbiamo iniziato abbiamo ancora molte difficoltà, ma siamo contenti che di piacere a sempre più persone.
Ho ascoltato le vostre canzoni, si sente una grande potenza, in quale filone vi inserireste? MI pare di percepire anche del post-rock tipo Mogwai e God Is An Astronaut oltre il metal? Che ne pensate?
Grazie per il complimento. Abbiamo molti elementi del post-rock/metal, un genere che amiamo, ma non pensiamo che questo ci definisca in questo senso, perché alla fine, se una canzone è bella, penso che piacerà a tutti, indipendentemente da come verrà presentato il suo ambito.
Oltre i classici strumenti suonate l’haegeum e il geomungo, puoi descrivere di cosa si tratta?
Utilizziamo alcuni strumenti musicali tradizionali. Geomungo è uno strumento a corda che emette un basso simile a un basso, mentre Haegeum emette un suono sfregando le corde come un violino. E c’è anche un Piri, un flauto di bambù. Questa metafora è una descrizione di facile comprensione e non suona nello stesso modo; quindi, ti consigliamo di venire allo spettacolo e sperimentarla tu stesso.
Ad accompagnarvi sul paco un duo giapponese, i Moja, come è avvenuta questa fusione? In “Square wave” è la voce di Haru quella che canta?
E’ la prima volta che ci esibiamo insieme. Ma non siamo presenti l’uno sul palco dell’altro. Abbiamo sentito spesso dire che i Moja sono una band davvero buona. Voglio conoscerci meglio attraverso questa opportunità.
Da dove traete ispirazione per i vostri testi?
Le esperienze personali o le impressioni su qualcosa sono le cose principali. Una storia è molto personale, espressione di rabbia, amore, gioia e tristezza.
Il vostro ultimo album, “Onda”, è del 2019, a quando la prossima uscita?
Abbiamo pubblicato un altro EP nel 2022, e penso che il prossimo uscirà probabilmente l’anno prossimo o al massimo nel 2026.
La dimensione live che importanza ha per voi? Vi aspettiamo in Italia, è la prima volta che visitate il nostro paese? Cosa potete promettere ai fan italiani che verranno a vedervi?
Non è la nostra prima visita in Italia. Ci siamo esibiti a Firenze, Milano, in altre città, ma più che per il nostro spettacolo, ci siamo esibiti per eventi come EXPO e Piti Uomo. E qualche anno fa ci siamo esibiti all’Hana-Bi di Ravenna. E’ la nostra prima volta a Bologna e siamo emozionati.
Programmi futuri?
Stiamo programmando un tour in Asia a luglio e una performance per il nuovo album, oltre alla produzione dello spettacolo teatrale per il prossimo anno. Naturalmente ci saranno tour continui. Seguiteci per essere sempre aggiornati.

Hello and nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock, it’s the first band we know coming from South Korea, we’re very happy about it. How is the music scene in your country? What are the genres and bands that have the most success and audience in your country?
Nice to meet you. Korea is well known as K-pop, but there are many different kinds of music. The most famous band as a band these days is Silica Gel. We don’t think one specific genre is popular because there are many artists doing various genres.
How did you meet? What were your first musical listens?
Three old friends who majored in traditional music and started a band. we can’t remember listening to anything together, but we remember saying, “Let’s not do the things that were popular but not good at the time.”
Have you had difficulty exporting your music abroad? Have you already participated in tours or festivals in Europe and America?
On average, we perform more than 50 times abroad every year. We have more schedules in Europe than in Korea. We still have many difficulties since we first started, but we are glad that more and more people like us.
I’ve listened to your songs, you can feel a great power, which trend would you fit into? I think I also perceive some post-rock like Mogwai and God Is An Astronaut as well as metal? What do you think?
Thank you for the compliment. We have a lot of elements of post-rock / metal lovers, but we don’t think that defines us all. because ultimately, if it’s beautiful, I think everyone will love it regardless of how it’s presented.
Besides the classic instruments, you play the haegeum and the geomungo, can you describe what it is?
We use some traditional musical instruments. Geomungo is a string instrument that gives off a low-like bass, and Haegeum makes a sound by rubbing strings like a violin. And there is also a Piri. It is a bamboo flute. This metaphor is an easy-to-understand description and never sounds the same, so we recommend that you come to the show and experience it yourself.
Accompanying you on stage is a Japanese duo, Moja, how did this fusion happen? Is it Haru’s voice singing in “Square wave”?
It’s our first time performing together. But we don’t feature on each other’s stage. We’ve heard a lot that moja is a really good band. I want to get to know each other better through this opportunity.
Where do you get inspiration for your lyrics?
Personal experiences, or impressions of something, are the main things. A very personal story. It’s an expression of anger, love, joy, and sadness.
Your latest album, “Onda”, is from 2019, when is the next release?
We released another ep in 2022, and I think the next one will probably be next year or 26 years.
What importance does the live dimension have for you? We are waiting for you in Italy, is this your first time visiting our country? What can you promise the Italian fans who will come to see you?
It’s not our first visit to Italy. We’ve performed in Firenze, Milano, in other cities, but rather than for our show, we’ve been show for events like EXPO and Piti Uomo. And a few years ago, we performed in Ravenna’s Hana-Bi. It’s our first time in Bologna, and we are excited.
Future plans?
We are planning a tour of Asia in July and a performance for next year’s new album and theatrical show production. Of course, there will be continuous tours. Please show a lot of interest.
