IYEARA – Intervista su Europavox Festival 2019
In occasione della loro partecipazione a Europavox Festival 2019, ho intervistato la band IYEARA, i nuovi re della darkwawe, che mixano e remixano aggiudicandosi nomination prestigiose (MPG award nomination for remixers of the year).
Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti che vi hanno indirizzato verso la musica?
Ciao Maurizio! Crescendo eravamo circondati dalla musica … David Bowie, Roxy Music, Stevie Wonder in un loop continuo. Kraftwerk a Elton John e poi Jimi Hendrix …. tutte le grandi band degli anni ’80 come The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen È stata una grande educazione musicale. Siamo sempre stati attratti dal dramma musicale e siamo affascinati dal modo in cui un sottile cambiamento di testo può influenzare uno stato d’animo dentro di te e l’intera dinamica della musica che lo circonda.
Provenite da esperienze diverse, come vi siete trovati a formare questa band?
Direi che non l’abbiamo proprio formato nel senso di creare una band, ci conosciamo da anni e da sempre c’è stato un rispetto per quello che ognuno di noi ha fatto, ma in passato eravamo stati tutti impegnati in altri progetti. E’ capitato che abbiamo trovato un poco di tempo libero a disposizione e abbiamo voluto provare a vedere cosa sarebbe successo se fossimo entrati in uno studio di registrazione. Il suono di IYEARA è davvero il suono di tre diversi elementi che si uniscono per rendere qualcosa di unico, penso.
La vostra musica è veramente affascinante, pensate esista il pericolo che l’elettronica risulti troppo fredda?
Non credo che finora abbiamo riscontrato questo problema, usiamo un sacco di apparecchiature analogiche “vere” e ci divertiamo a confondere le linee tra ciò che è il basso o la chitarra e persino la voce in un mix. A volte l’elettronica non è elettronica. Penso che questo approccio porti calore. Siamo anche veramente attratti dal cuore e dall’anima dell’esecuzione nel processo di registrazione, che aiuta a tenere a bada il freddo.
Voi proponete musica vostra e cover, come scegliete le canzoni da trasformare in cover?
Finora abbiamo realizzato solo una cover, “Shout” dei Tears For Fears ed è avvenuto quasi per caso. Toby ha avuto questo ritmo davvero fantastico per il quale non avevamo trovato il giusto uso e ho pensato di provare qualcosa di semplice come Shout, si adattava così bene che abbiamo pensato di non fare una cover. Facciamo molti remix per altre band e artisti …. e in effetti abbiamo remixato i “W4U” per i JoyCut che sono una band così fantastica.
Voi avete già suonato in Italia?
Non come IYEARA, quindi non vediamo davvero l’ora. Abbiamo suonato in Italia in altri nostri progetti.
Come siete arrivati a partecipare al Festival Europavox?
Ne avevamo sentito parlare dai JoyCut e siamo stati davvero entusiasti di essere invitati. È un festival fantastico e un modo meraviglioso di condividere esperienze dal vivo di diversi paesi e il luogo è spettacolare.
Il Festival Europavox è portatore degli ideali europei, come vedete il momento sociale che noi stiamo vivendo?
Penso che questi siano tempi difficili. L’ascesa della politica di destra in tutto il mondo e la negazione dei cambiamenti climatici mettono in pericolo il futuro di tutti. Ma è anche un momento entusiasmante per i movimenti che vogliono lottare per il cambiamento e far sentire la loro voce.
Voi siete originari della Gran Bretagna, cosa pensate della situazione creata dalla brexit?
Personalmente penso che sia terribile, il mondo dovrebbe rimuovere i confini e ampliare le libertà personali, non alzando i muri, ma favorendo le unioni.
Cosa promettete al pubblico che verrà a vedervi allo storico Teatro Comunale?
Promettiamo che sarà uno show buio, ossessivo e con un tocco minaccioso nell’aria.

What were your first plays that led you to music?
Hello Maurizio! Growing up we were surrounded by music… David Bowie, Roxy Music, Stevie Wonder on constant repeat. Kraftwerk to Elton John and then Jimi Hendrix….and then all the great bands from the 1980’s like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen It was a great musical education. We’ve always been drawn to the drama in music and we’re fascinated how a subtle change of lyric can effect a mood inside you and the whole dynamic of the music around it.
You come from different experiences, how did you find yourself forming this band?
I guess we didn’t really form it as such, we had know each other for years and there had always been a respect for what each of us did, but in the past we had all been committed to other projects. We just found ourselves with some time on our hands and wanted to see what would happen if we got in a room. The sound of IYEARA really is the sound of three different elements coming together to make something unique I think.
Your music is really fascinating, do you think there is a danger that electronics will be too cold?
I don’t think we’ve really encountered that problem, we use a lot of “real” analogue equipment and enjoy blurring the lines between what’s the bass or guitar and even voice in a mix. Sometimes the electronics aren’t electronic. I think that approach brings the warmth. We are also really drawn to the heart and soul of the performance in the recording process…..that helps to keep the cold at bay.
You propose your own music and covers, how do you choose the songs to transform into covers?
We’ve only done the one cover so far, Tears For Fears ‘Shout’ and that sort of came about by accident. Toby had this really cool beat which we hadn’t found the right use for and I was thinking about trying something straightforward like Shout, it fitted so well we though why not do a cover. We do a lot of remixes for other bands and artists….and in fact we remixed ‘W4U’ for JoyCut who are such a great band.
Have you already played in Italy?
Not as IYEARA so we are really looking forward to it. We’ve played in Italy in our other projects.
How did you get to participate in the Europavox Festival?
We’d heard of it through JoyCut and were really excited to be asked. It’s such a great festival and a wonderful way of sharing live experiences from different countries and the venue is spectacular.
The Europavox Festival is the bearer of European ideals, how do you see the social moment we are experiencing?
I think these are difficult times. The rise of right wing politics across the world and the denial of climate change puts everyone’s future in danger. But also it’s an exciting time for movements to fight for change and have their voices heard.
What do you think about the brexit situation that will lead the UK out of Europe?
Personally I think it’s terrible, the world should be removing boarders and expanding freedoms not putting up walls and leaving unions.
What do you promise the public that will come to see you at the historic Teatro Comunale?
We promise it will be dark, haunting and have a touch of menace in the air.
