Intervista al chitarrista John Jorgenson (Bob Dylan, Elton John, Streisand e tanti altri)

-Com’è imparare a usare uno strumento in una famiglia in cui i genitori sono musicisti?Quanto hanno influenzato il tuo studio? Spingevano solo sullo strumento che loro preferivano o ti hanno lasciato aperte più possibilità?

How did your parents interact with you when you started playing guitar or saxophone. Were they strictly related To The instrument They liked or They left you many more choices and open possibilities?

Well, I started first on The piano. My mother was a piano teacher so she liked that; The second instrument was The clarinet. My father was a band director (direttore d’orchestra), he liked that. Then when I Wanted To play guitar They were not so interested. They thought “Oh no! Too many instruments for a young kid, Too many instruments to practice. Guitar is not a serious instrument”. So They didn’t encourage that very much. It took me Two years and finally They realized I was serious so They got me a guitar and said “Ok, you can only Practice guitar If you first practice The clarinet and The piano”. But once They realized I was serious about it and that I Also started To play bass and other instruments, They just realized that’s was Who I was and It was ok.

Ho iniziato con il piano. Mia madre era un’insegnante di pianoforte e a lei piaceva che lo suonassi; il secondo strumento fu il clarinetto. Mio padre era direttore d’orchestra e a lui piaceva quello strumento e mi ha accompagnato verso quella direzione. Quando ho espresso il desiderio di suonare la chitarra loro non erano molto interessati e felici della cosa. Pensarono “No, troppi strumenti per un ragazzino, troppi strumenti da praticare, la chitarra non è uno strumento serio” e quindi non hanno incoraggiato molto la cosa. Mi ci sono voluti due anni e alla fine hanno realizzato che ero serio; mi hanno comprato una chitarra e hanno detto “Puoi studiare la chitarra se prima studi il clarinetto e il piano”. Poi hanno capito che ero molto interessato visto che ho iniziato anche a suonare il basso e altri strumenti.

-Hai comunque utilizzato tantissimi strumenti, non ti sei soffermato solo al pianoforte e al sassofono, hai usato anche il contrabbasso, il mandoloncello, il mandolino…perché hai diversificato così?

Why did you like so many different instruments?

I just like The sound of Them and If I like The sound Of it I want to try To figure out How To make that sound.

Semplicemente mi piaceva il loro suono, e volevo provare a riprodurre quel suono.

Ti veniva facile imparare a usarli tutti?

Was it easy To play different instruments?

Well, you need To practice each instrument. All the different facets of music, dynamics, rithm, timing, all of The tuning, all of these things transfer To each instrument. They are universal principals. Some picking on The guitar can transfer To picking on The mandolin but figuring on The clarinet or The saxophone, each instrument has its own sort of physicality you need To master.

C’è bisogno di pratica per ogni singolo strumento. Tutte le diverse sfaccettature della musica, dinamiche, ritmo, tempo, intonazioni, tutte queste cose devono trasferirsi ad ogni strumento. Questi sono principi universali. Alcuni….della chitarra possono trasferirsi al mandolino ma se pensi al clarinetto o al sassofono, ogni strumento ha la sua fisicità che bisogna trasferire.

-Quindi sei una persona caparbia e testarda

-La chitarra, strumento vietato fino a 12 anni, divenuto poi lo strumento più importante della tua carriera. Parlaci del rapporto che hai con la tua chitarra, con la chitarra in generale e come hai vissuto la privazione iniziale di questo strumento

Guitar become probably The most important instrument of your life. How is your relation with guitar and How was The relation when your parents said “oh probably you don’t Have To play guitar because it’s not The right things for you”

I Have always liked The sound of different kind of guitars when I was a kid, The classical guitar, The rocking guitar and styles. It was an easy sound To My ear.
The Reason Why The guitar  became  The most important for My career was that
If I had To play an instrument for someone else I Wanted to play The guitar. People started hiring me as bass player for their bands but I didn’t like that so I just said at one point I just play The guitar, that’s it.

Ho sempre amato il suono delle diverse chitarre, strumenti a corde vari e stili differenti. Era un suono facile per me. La chitarra é diventata lo strumento più importante per la mia carriera perché se avessi dovuto suonare uno strumento per qualcun altro sarebbe stata la chitarra. Inizialmente ho suonato il basso per altre band ma non mi piaceva così a un certo punto ho pensato che l’unico strumento che volevo suonare era la chitarra. 

-Ah dimenticavo….sai anche cantare… Lasciamo fare qualcosa anche agli altri o vuoi fare tutto tu?
You sing Too… Do you think other musicians can do something that you don’t do or you are Going To do everything and nothing else for The other?

Don’t listen To me playing violin…ahahahah

-Hai suonato con artisti del calibro di Elton John, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand, Luciano Pavarotti. Ti hanno sempre dato la possibilità di esprimerti come volevi oppure avevi delle imposizioni da parte loro. Ti davano la possibilità di essere te stesso e di usare la tua fantasia oppure erano più quadrati.

You played with a lot of very important artists like…do They leave you express yourself as you preferred or They grave you restriction?

Both. It depends…If It’s a song that you try To replicate you Have To do The part, If you are recording a new song you can try and do what you think or sometimes They already Have an idea…

Entrambi. Dipende… Se si tratta di una canzone che cerchi di replicare devi suonare in un certo modo; se stai registrando una nuova canzone puoi provare e suonare quello che hai in mente per vedere se funziona, oppure a volte c’è già un’idea di base.

-Ci sono degli artisti x noi italiani che sono delle icone come Elton John o Barbara Streisand. Viste da vicino e conosciute personalmente, che personaggi sono?

You talked about very famous artists like Barbara Streisand or Elton John. How are They, did you Have The time To interact with Them?

Usually very nice, Barbara Streisand in particular, I thought she was a hard woman but she was very friendly and nice. Elton John is very funny and brilliant, he remebers everything, telephone Numbers, favourite teams, interests. Billy Joe is very friendly, outgoing, not shy. Each person is different.

-Di solito molto gentili. Barbara Streisand in particolare, pensavo fosse una donna dura ma in realtà è molto amichevole e carina. Elton John é molto divertente e brillante, si ricorda tutto, numeri di telefono, squadre preferite e interessi di chi incontra. Billy Joe é molto amichevole, estroverso. Ogni persona é differente.

-Hai lavorato con Elton John tanti anni. Regalaci un aneddoto inedito.

Do you Have a special anecdote about your playing with Elton John? 

Well, at The end of a tour he invited My Wife and I To his house for a vacation. He has a main house and maybe ten Huge border Terriers dogs. My Wife said “Oh! How cute They are! We Have To get one” and he answered “I’ll send you one!”. I thought He was kidding but he wasn’t. He called me and said “We Have your puppy, You need To decide What To name him, I think you should call him Kevin or William” and I said “…..No why Don’t you send me a picture, we’ll see what does he look like and we’ll name him”. NeXT day Federal Express delivered us The picture and finally it was The most amazing gift ever.

Alla fine di un tour Elton invitò me e mia moglie a casa sua. Aveva in quel periodo 10 cani di razza border Terriers. Mia moglie disse “oh! Guarda che carini, dovremmo averne uno anche noi!” E lui rispose “Ne avrai uno!”. Pensavo stesse scherzando e invece era serio. Mi chiamo poi è mi disse “Abbiamo il vostro cucciolo! Dovete solo decidere il nome, penso che dovreste chiamarlo Kevin o William!” E io risposi “Bhe, no…perché non mi mandi una foto, vediamo com’è e pensiamo a un nome per lui”. Il giorno dopo FedEx ci ha consegnato la foto di Elton con il cucciolo e successivamente il cucciolo. É stato il regalo più emozionante mai ricevuto.

-Ora, senza pensarci troppo, dimmi un artista del passato che ascolti spesso e uno del presente che più ti piace.

Is it your first time in Italy? What do you think of Italy?

No, many Times…I love Italy, I Have had such a good time playing with fantastic musicians here, of course The food is fantastic The hospitality, everything is beautiful, The countryside, The history, The people very Warm, I come Back once a year.

No, sono venuto in Italia molte volte. Amo l’Italia, mi è piaciuto molto suonare con fantastici musicisti qui. Naturalmente il cibo é fantastico, l’ospitalità, tutto è bellissimo, la campagna, la storia, le persone sono calorose, ci torno una volta all’anno.
