ICONIC – Intervista al chitarrista Joel Hoekstra
Gli Iconic son una nuova band, un supergruppo che coinvolge musicisti di prim’ordine come Nathan James (Inglorious) alla voce, Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) alla chitarra, Michael Sweet (Stryper) qui nella doppia veste di cantante e chitarrista e una portentosa sezione ritmica con il basso di Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, The Dead Daisies e altri) e la batteria di Tommy Aldridge (Whitesnake. “Second Skin” è l’album di debutto recensito su queste pagine (leggi qui la recensione). Ne ho parlato con Joel Hoekstra, il chitarrista della band e di altre gloriose realtà come Whitesnake e Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao Joel, benvenuto su Tuttorock. Iconic, una nuova band e si può parlare di supergruppo visto il curriculum di tutti i componenti della band, oltre a te c’è Nathan james, Michae Sweet, Marco Mendoza e Tommy Aldridge. Dove e come è venuta l’idea?
La Frontiers Records ha davvero avuto l’idea di circondare Nathan James con un gruppo di musicisti rock classici esperti. Allo stesso tempo Michael Sweet stava parlando con loro di come io e lui stavamo facendo un progetto insieme. La Frontiers ha avuto l’idea di mettere insieme questi 2 concetti. Hanno detto, aggiungeremo il batterista e il bassista su tutta la linea e con mia sorpresa sono finito ad essere compagno di band nuovamente con Tommy Aldridge e Marco Mendoza.
Come vi siete conosciuti tu e gli altri ragazzi della band?
Tommy e io ci siamo incontrati a uno spettacolo dei Night Ranger alcuni anni prima che mi unissi ai Whitesnake, Michael e io abbiamo lavorato insieme in qualche modo per anni e ci siamo incontrati quando suonava con i Boston e i Night Ranger hanno aperto per loro, Nathan e io ci siamo incontrati attraverso il nostro lavoro con la Trans-Siberian Orchestra, io e Marco ci siamo conosciuti quando lui era con i Dead Daisies.
Un tuo pensiero su ciascuno di loro, come musicisti e come persone.
Ero in qualche modo amico di ognuno di questi ragazzi che ha portato a questo progetto, quindi è molto naturale. Ho già detto che sono tutti musicisti estremamente talentuosi? Ahah!
Come darti torto? Perché il nome Iconic?
Questa è stata davvero la scelta delle etichette. Sicuramente non mi considero “iconico”. Ahah!
Perché “Second Skin” come titolo?
Ancora una volta, questa è stata davvero la scelta dell’etichetta. Il testo stesso proviene da Alessandro Del Vecchio, in quanto è una delle tracce dell’album. Suppongo che siano un po’ sfacciati riguardo all’influenza dei Whitesnake a un certo livello. Ma va tutto bene.
Quale è invece il significato dei testi?
Ho scritto solo i riff di chitarra per questo album. Per il significato lirico dovresti chiedere ad Alessandro e/o Nathan in quanto sono quelli che li hanno scritti.
Mi sembra che i Whitesnake siano la principale influenza del sound Iconic, come già hai detto vero?
Mi è stato chiesto di scrivere riff di chitarra hard rock melodici anni ’80. Le mie 2 band preferite che corrispondono a quella descrizione per i riff sono Whitesnake e Dokken. Puoi sicuramente sentire entrambe le loro influenze nei riff.
Nel video “Nowhere To Run”, puoi vedere che ti diverti molto, c’è una forte unione tra di voi?
Sì. Come ho detto prima, questi ragazzi sono tutti miei amici. È stato un momento divertente girare i video… un grande blocco.
State organizzando un tour?
Al momento non è previsto nulla. Sono nel tour di addio dei Whitesnake fino al tour della Trans-Siberian Orchestra quest’anno. Speriamo di poter organizzare qualcosa nel 2023. Penso che questa band ucciderebbe dal vivo. Sono pronto, di sicuro.
Come gestisci il tutto con i vari impegni che hai con le altre band?
Cerco solo di rimanere concentrato e produttivo ogni giorno della mia vita. Questo aiuta! Ahah! Non sono un fan delle perdite di tempo.
Quest’anno ci sarà il tour d’addio dei Whitesnake, dopo cosa farà Joel Hoekstra?
Dovrebbero esserci più tour dei Whitesnake nel 2023, dato che non abbiamo abbastanza tempo nel 2022 per suonare in tutti i territori in cui David vuole arrivare. Si spera che un altro tour della Trans-Siberoan Orchestra. Inoltre registro costantemente, insegno e suono dal vivo con altre cose. In un modo o nell’altro, mi spaccherò il culo. Ahah!
Tu come definisci il sound degli Iconic.
È uno stile hard di ritorno al passato degli anni ’80 presentato con la produzione del 2022. È una band hard rock molto rock e melodica di musicisti di talento che si adattano bene insieme.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. Iconic, a new band and we can talk about supergroup given your resume. Where and how did you get the idea?
Frontiers really had the idea of surrounding Nathan James with a group of experienced classic rock musicians. At the same time Michael Sweet was talking with them about he and I doing a project together. Frontiers had the idea of putting those 2 concepts together. They said, we’ll add the drummer and bass player down the line and MUCH to my surprise that ended up being my Whitesnake bandmate Tommy Aldridge and Marco Mendoza.
How did you and the other guys in the band meet?
Tommy and I met at a Night Ranger show a few years before I joined Whitesnake, Michael and I have been working together in some capacity for years now and met when he was playing with Boston and Night Ranger opened for them, Nathan and I met through our work with Trans Siberian Orchestra, Marco and I met when he was with the Dead Daisies.
Your thoughts on each of them, as musicians and as people.
I was friends in some capacity with each of these guys leading into this, so it feels very natural. Did I mention they’re all extremely talented musicians? Haha!
Why the name Iconic?
That was really the labels choice. I definitely don’t think of myself as “Iconic”. Haha!
Why “Second Skin”?
Again, that was really the label’s pick. The lyric itself comes from Alessandro Del Vecchio, as it is one of the tracks on the album. I suppose they’re being a bit cheeky about the Whitesnake influence on a level. It’s all good.
The meaning of the lyrics?
I really only wrote the guitar riffs for this. For lyrical meaning you should rally ask Alessandro and/or Nathan as they’re the ones that wrote them.
It seems to me that Whitesnake are the main influence of the Iconic sound, is that so?
I was asked to write 80’s melodic hard rock guitar riffs. My 2 favorite band that fit that description for riffs are Whitesnake and Dokken. You can definitely hear both of their influences in the riffs.
In the video “Nowhere To Run”, you can see that you have a lot of fun, is there a strong union between you?
Yes. As I stated earlier, these guys are all my friends. It was a fun time shooting the videos…a great hang.
Are you planning a tour?
Nothing is planned at the moment. I’m on Whitesnake’s Farewell Tour all the way up to the Trans Siberian Orchestra tour this year. Hopefully we can line something up in 2023. I think this band would kill it live. I’m up for it, for sure.
How do you manage everything with the various commitments you have with the other bands?
I just try to stay focused and productive every day of my life. That helps! Haha! I’m not a fan of wasting time.
This year there will be the Whitesnake farewell tour, after what will Joel Hoekstra do?
There should be more Whitesnake touring in 2023, as we don’t have enough time in 2022 to play all the territories that David wants to get to. Hopefully another Trans Siberian Orchestra Tour. I’m also constantly recording, teaching and playing live with other things. One way or another, I’ll be busting my ass. Haha!
You define the sound of Iconic.
It’s a throwback 1980’s hard style presented with 2022 production. It’s a very rocking, melodic hard rock band of talented musicians that fit well together.
