HOLLOW COVES – Intervista al duo australiano
In occasione dell’uscita del primo LP “Moments” su etichetta Nettwerk/Bertus, ho intervistato il cantante e chitarrista Ryan Henderson che, insieme a Matt Carins, forma il duo indie/folk australiano Hollow Coves.
Benvenuti sulle pagine di Tuttorock, ho ascoltato il vostro LP di debutto più volte, lo apprezzo molto, come è nata l’idea di questo titolo?
Grazie! Sono contento che ti piaccia l’album. Il titolo è tratto dalla traccia “Moments”, che è stata ispirata dalla consapevolezza che le nostre vite sono in definitiva costituite da una raccolta di momenti. In ogni momento abbiamo una scelta tra il fare qualcosa di significativo o semplicemente perdere tempo. Questo era un tema che è presente in tutto l’album. Inoltre, ogni canzone è stata ispirata da diversi momenti della nostra vita e della vita delle persone che ci circondano, quindi abbiamo pensato che il titolo fosse una buona rappresentazione di questa raccolta di canzoni.
Come nascono le vostre canzoni?
Le canzoni di solito partono dalla chitarra. Spesso ci viene in mente qualcosa da suonare con la chitarra e poi borbottiamo qualcosa per creare una melodia. Quindi registriamo quel qualcosa, lo ascoltiamo e proviamo a capire come potrebbe suonare la canzone, poi proviamo a trarre ispirazione da qualcosa che abbiamo vissuto e tentiamo di collegare la melodia ai testi che si adattano all’emozione.
Come vi siete conosciuti e come è nata l’idea di fare musica insieme?
Ci siamo incontrati tramite un amico comune. Matt stava registrando della musica con un altro suo amico, una mia amica conosceva l’amico di Matt e mi ha illustrato la loro musica. Non conoscevo nessuno nella zona in cui vivevamo che suonava quel tipo di musica, quindi ho iniziato a chattare con loro. All’epoca stavo registrando delle cover nella mia camera da letto. Poi un giorno, l’amico di Matt è partito per andare a suonare la batteria per una band heavy metal e Matt mi ha contattato per chiedermi se volessi provare a suonare qualcosa con lui. Sembrano ricordi un pò confusi ora, ma abbiamo finito per scrivere alcune canzoni insieme. Quindi Matt aveva un amico che stava registrando nel garage dei suoi genitori e abbiamo deciso che sarebbe stato bello registrare le nostre canzoni. Non avremmo mai pensato che sarebbe potuto diventare qualcosa di più di un pò di divertimento.
Il vostro primo EP, “Wanderlust”, ha avuto molto successo, le vostre canzoni sono state ascoltate in streaming da milioni di ascoltatori, vi aspettavate questo successo?
Siamo stupiti dal numero di persone che hanno ascoltato la nostra musica. È travolgente, non ci saremmo mai aspettati di arrivare a quei livelli. Non credo che sarò mai in grado di capacitarmente, siamo solo molto grati.
Qual’è la vostra formazione musicale?
Nessuno di noi è tecnicamente molto in alto quando si parla di musica. Matt è cresciuto in una famiglia molto musicale, quindi era costantemente circondato dalla musica. Penso che abbia preso qualche lezione di chitarra quando era più giovane. Io ho preso lezioni di piano quando ero più giovane e qualche lezione di chitarra, ma penso che la maggior parte delle mie conoscenze musicali sia arrivata guardando i tutorial su YouTube e suonando molto.
Quali sono i vostri artisti preferiti?
È difficile racchiuderli in poco spazio ma alcuni dei nostri artisti preferiti sono Bombay Bicycle Club, Bon Iver, Angus e Julia Stone, Ben Howard, Asgeir, i Coldplay e Sufjan Stevens.
Il vostro Paese d’origine, l’Australia, consente alle persone di inseguire sogni da musicista o pensi che l’Europa offra più possibilità?
Decisamente. È difficile dire se sia meglio in Europa perché non riusciamo davvero a vedere come stanno le cose laggiù. Tuttavia, l’Australia supporta molto bene la nostra scena musicale. Abbiamo così tanti artisti incredibili che escono dall’Australia e che stanno avendo un buon impatto all’estero, quindi la cosa è sicuramente incoraggiante per i futuri artisti australiani.
So che farete un tour europeo a novembre che sfortunatamente non include l’Italia, dopo questo tour quali sono i vostri progetti futuri?
Non vi abbiamo dimenticati. Attualmente stiamo provando a pianificare un tour per il prossimo anno che includerà anche l’Italia. Suoneremo in Australia a gennaio e poi in Nord America a febbraio. Non voglio dare alcuna indicazione delle date perché non è ancora stato confermato nulla, ma tenete gli occhi aperti perché verremo sicuramente in Italia l’anno prossimo!

On the occasion of the release of the first LP “Moments” on the Nettwerk / Bertus label, I interviewed the singer and guitarist Ryan Henderson who, together with Matt Carins, forms the Australian indie / folk duo Hollow Coves.
Welcome to the pages of Tuttorock, I listened to your debut LP several times, I really appreciate it, how did the idea for this title come about?
Thank you! Glad you like the album. The title came from the title track ‘Moments’ which was inspired by a realisation that our lives are ultimately made up of a collection of moments. In each moment we have a choice between doing something meaningful or just wasting our time. That was a theme that carried throughout the album. Also, each song was inspired by different moments in our lives and the lives of people around us so we thought that the title was a good representation of this collection of songs.
How are your songs born?
The songs usually start on guitar. We often will just come up with something on guitar and then sing gibberish over the top to come up with a melody. Then we record that and listen back to it and try to figure out what the song sounds like it would be about. Then we try to draw inspiration from something we’ve experienced and try to connect the melody with lyrics that fit the emotion.
How did you meet and how the idea of making music together was born?
We met through a mutual friend. Matt had been recording some music with another friend of his. My friend knew Matt’s friend and she showed me their music. I didn’t know anyone in the area that we lived in that was playing that kind of music so I started chatting with them. I had been recording covers in my bedroom at the time. Then one day, Matt’s friend left to go play drums for a heavy metal band and Matt reached out to me to see if I would be keen to have a jam sometime. It seems like a bit of a blur now but we ended up writing some songs together. Then Matt had a friend who had been doing some recording in his parents’ garage so we decided it would be cool to record the songs. We never really thought it would be anything more than a bit of fun.
Your first EP the “Wanderlust” has been very successful, your songs have been streamed by millions of listeners, did you expect this success?
We are blown away by the number of people that have heard our music. It’s overwhelming. We never expected it would have that kind of reach. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my head around it. We’re just super grateful.
What are your musical education?
Neither of us are technically very advanced when it comes to music. Matt grew up in a very musical family so he was constantly surrounded by music. I think he had some guitar lessons when he was younger. I took piano lessons when I was younger and had a couple of guitar lessons but I think most of what I know came from watching tutorials on YouTube and just playing a lot.
What are your favorite artists?
So hard to narrow it down but a few of our favourites are Bombay Bicycle Club, Bon Iver, Angus and Julia Stone, Ben Howard, Asgeir, Coldplay, and Sufjan Stevens.
Does your native country, Australia, allow people to pursue musician dreams or do you think Europe gives more possibilities?
Definitely. It’s hard to tell if its better in Europe because we don’t really get to see what it’s like over there. However, Australia is definitely supportive of our music scene. We have so many incredible artists coming out of Australia that are having an impact overseas so it’s definitely encouraging for upcoming Australian artists.
I know you will be doing a European tour in November which unfortunately does not include Italy, after this tour what are your future plans?
We have not forgotten you. We are currently trying to plan a tour for next year which will include Italy. We will be touring Australia in January and then North America in February. I don’t want to give any indication of dates because nothing is locked in yet but keep your eyes peeled because we will definitely be coming to Italy next year!
