HAYDEN CALNIN – Intervista al cantante

In occasione dell’uscita del su nuovo album album “WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN” ho intervistato HAYDEN CALNIN.

Buongiorno Hayden, piacere di averti sulle pagine di Tuttorock. La tua musica è sognante e senza tempo, quali sono stati gli artisti che ti hanno ispirato?
Tanti negli anni. I miei preferiti di sempre sono Counting Crows, Jóhann Jóhannsson, M83, Low, Bon Iver, Rickie Lee Jones e Fleetwood Mac. Continuo ad ascoltare tuttora la loro musica e sono stati fonte d’ispirazione per i miei dischi. 

Hai scritto colonne sonore per molte serie di successo, quale ti ha dato più soddisfazione?
La musica può essere una parte importante e integrare la narrazione della storia nel film, mi è abbastanza difficile scegliere la mia partecipazione o colonna sonora preferita. Detto questo, se devo indicare la mia preferita, sceglierei la mia canzone “Visible” nel film “The Pretend One”. È sempre bello avere un regista che crede nel tuo suono e si fida che tu faccia tutto da solo, che è esattamente quello che è successo per questo film. Penso di aver inventato circa 7 versioni diverse per questa scena, ma il regista ed io siamo tornati alla prima alla fine perché ha colpito tutti i punti giusti dal punto di vista sonoro. È stato molto bello collaborare con un regista australiano su di un film così incredibile. 

Molto interessante la feat con Harrison Storm, come è nata?
Harry ed io siamo buoni amici. Lui era appena tornato da un lungo tour all’estero e aveva bisogno di un posto tranquillo dove stare. Avevo una stanza degli ospiti in casa mia, quindi Harry ha vissuto con me e il mio coinquilino per circa un anno. Vivevamo proprio sulla spiaggia, lungo le rive meridionali di Victoria, in Australia. Il mio studio era in un edificio separato dalla casa e ci siamo trovati a vivere in una una casa piena di musicisti; scrivere canzoni era qualcosa che tendeva ad accadere molto frequentemente. Un giorno Harry era al piano di sotto in modalità scrittura, e io nel mio studio di registrazione a lavorare su alcune nuove canzoni. Harry mi ha chiesto di inviargli alcune cose strumentali su cui stavo lavorando, pensando che lo avrebbe aiutato a dare vita alla sua scrittura. Ha finito per inventare delle bellissime melodie, quindi siamo semplicemente saltati in studio e l’abbiamo registrato. E’ andata esattamente così! 

Sono passati 4 anni dall’ultimo disco, hai risentito anche tu del lockdown?
Effettivamente c’è voluto del tempo, ma non è stato intenzionale. Sono stato molto impegnato per alcuni anni a registrare e produrre per vari artisti in tutta l’Australia; quindi, per un poco mi sono concentrato sull’arte di altre persone. Il lockdown è stato difficile, certo, ma ha messo molte cose in prospettiva e sono davvero entusiasta per il futuro. Sono stato abbastanza fortunato da vivere in una bellissima piccola parte isolata del mondo per la maggior parte dei blocchi; quindi, non ne ho davvero risentito, per me non è che sia cambiato molto, a parte gli ovvii problemi che ne sono seguiti. 

Hai raccontato di come è nato il tuo album, sulle coste dell’Australia, che messaggio hai voluto mandare?
Nessun vero messaggio sinceramente. Voglio che le persone traggano il loro significato dal disco, ognuno il proprio personale. 

Hai suonato tu tutti gli strumenti o hai avuto dei musicisti?
Tutti io, tranne alcune parti di batteria (Jared Hatton) e alcuni cantanti ospiti (Alana Wilkinson, Angus Robb). Ma a parte questo, ho fatto tutto da solo. 

Politicians può avere come soggetto una persona, ma anche politici, quale è il senso esatto?
Vuole solo essere un promemoria per le persone, devi difendere ciò in cui credi, sempre. Devi essere te stesso. 

Progetti futuri? Hai un tour in programma? Magari in Italia?
Certo. Tornerò in Europa il prima possibile. Dopo la pubblicazione di questo album ho alcune collaborazioni in uscita con degli artisti fantastici, ho anche iniziato a lavorare su alcune nuove canzoni con il mio progetto parallelo Ok Moon (con Dustin Tebbutt, LANKS, Xavier Dunn), ho anche iniziato a lavorare su delle nuove canzoni.

Hello Hayden, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. Your music is dreamy and timeless, which artists have inspired you?
So many over the years. Some all time favourites are Counting Crows, Jóhann Jóhannsson, M83, Low, Bon Iver, Rickie Lee Jones, and Fleetwood Mac. I’m constantly returning to their music and they have inspired a lot of what I put own on record. 

You have written scores for many successful series, which one gave you the most satisfaction?
Music can be such an integral part of storytelling in film and it seems quite hard to pick my favourite sync or score. That being said, I would have to say my favourite would be my song ‘Visible’ in the film ‘The Pretend One’. It’s always nice having a director who believes in your sound and trusts you to do just do you, which is exactly what happened for this film. I think I came up with about 7 different songs for this scene, but the Director and I came back to the first one in the end as it just hit all the right spots sonically. It was also just nice to collaborate with a local Australian director on such an incredible film. 

The feat with Harrison Storm is very interesting, how did it come about?
Harry and I are good mates. Harry had just got back from a lot of touring overseas and he needed a place to stay. I had a spare room in my house so Harry lived with me and my housemate for about a year or so in the end. We lived just by the beach on the southern shores of Victoria, Australia. My studio was in a building seperate to the house and we were a house full of musicians so writing a couple of songs was something that just tends to happen. Harry was downstairs in writing mode one day and I was out in my recording studio working on some new songs. Harry asked me to send him some instrumental things I had been working on, thinking it would help him spark some writing. He ended up coming up with some beautiful melodies so we just jumped in the studio and got it down. And that was that! 

It’s been 4 years since the last record, have you been affected by the lockdown too?
It has been a while. But not intentionally. I got very busy for a few years recording and producing for various artists around Australia, so the focus was on other peoples art for a little while there. Lockdown has been tough, sure, but it’s put a lot of things into perspective and I’m really excited for the future. I have been lucky enough to have been living in an isolated beautiful little part of the world for most of the lockdowns, so it never really felty like much had changed, other than the obvious. 

Did you tell about how your album was born, on the coasts of Australia, what message did you want to send?
No real message. I want people to make their own meaning out of the record.  

Did you play all the instruments or did you have any musicians?
Everything except for a few drum parts (Jared Hatton) and had some guests vocalists (Alana Wilkinson, Angus Robb) come in for a few too. But aside from that it’s just a bunch of me. 

Politicians can have a person as subject, but also politicians, what is the exact meaning?
It is just meant to be a reminder to people that you need to stand up for what you believe in, always. Be you.  

Future projects? Do you have a tour planned? Maybe in Italy?
Of course. I’ll be back over to Europe as soon as I can. Coming up after this album run I have a few collaborations coming out with some amazing artists, and also started working on some new songs with my collaborative side project Ok Moon (with Dustin Tebbutt, LANKS, Xavier Dunn) as well as some new beginnings to some new songs.
