GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES – Intervista al cantante, chitarrista ritmico e fondatore Giri …

Il rock, ma anche l’hard rock, parla tutte le lingue, un linguaggio universale e Girish Pradhan, leader dei Girish And the Chronicles (leggi qui la recensione del nuovo album), lo dimostra. Una formazione che arriva dall’India e dà scariche di adrenalina e di energia con il loro hard rock potente e vibrante.  Ne ho parlato co Girish Pradhan e ciò che segue è il resoconto dell’intervista.

Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Girish And The Chronicles, presenta la band, come è nata?
In realtà è una lunga storia. Ma in poche parole, siamo solo un gruppo di ragazzi di una piccola città, che sognano in grande, immagino. Yogesh (Il bassista/Produttore) ed io imparavamo le canzoni fin da quando eravamo bambini e sapevamo cosa volevamo fare nella vita, fin dall’inizio. (Per chi non lo sapesse, è mio fratello minore). Al college ci eravamo già esibiti in parecchi spettacoli ed è stato durante quel periodo (intorno al 2006) che ho incontrato Suraz, che presto mi ha presentato Nagen. Presto formammo una band e iniziammo ad esibirci in piccoli locali. Tuttavia, sono partito per le città più grandi per trovare più opportunità e possibilità di trasferire la band. Sono passati circa due anni e sono tornato nel Sikkim, il mio stato natale, dove ho incontrato Yogesh e ho iniziato a registrare il mio primo singolo in assoluto. Mi esibivo anche in un locale, dove Nagen si unì a me ancora una volta. Solo dopo un paio di mesi fu pubblicato un singolo di debutto chiamato “Angel”. Sebbene all’inizio fossimo un progetto solista, avevamo già iniziato ad esibirci insieme e quando ci siamo diretti verso i festival di livello universitario, che sono enormi in India, Suraz si è unito a noi ancora una volta formando la formazione permanente. Il progetto solista è stato ribattezzato Girish And The Chronicles. Uno dei motivi principali era che il mio nome andava bene e ricevevamo vari inviti a tali festival.

Si pensa che il rock sia un genere musicale seguito più in Occidente, ma tu e la tua band siete la prova che il rock è universale. È così per te?
Sì, il rock è sempre esistito in India. Con band più vecchie degli anni ’80/’90 come Parikrama, Rock Machine/Indus Creed, introducendo il genere hard rock a molti giovani, specialmente nelle zone collinari come il Sikkim. Sicuramente ha avuto un declino, ma band come noi sono responsabili della nuova generazione del genere, reintroducendolo a una nuova generazione e folla. C’era un enorme vuoto nel mezzo, specialmente negli anni 2000, quando la scena era stata occupata da generi più pesanti. Tutto sommato, è sparpagliato, ma sicuramente ci sono molti appassionati di Rock e il motivo principale dei GATC è sempre stato il revival di un tale suono e renderlo di nuovo rilevante. Siamo riusciti a farlo in molti modi, credo.

Quali sono i motivi che ti hanno convinto a creare la tua band? Chi o cosa?
Da quando ho lasciato la facoltà di ingegneria, ho avuto un solo scopo nella vita, che era quello di fondare una band che sarebbe rimasta a lungo. Guardavo documentari di varie band come i Led Zeppelin e mi ispiravo. Ero già stato in alcune band sin dai tempi della scuola, quindi era tutta una questione di passione che altro. La nostra intera generazione ai tempi della scuola infatti è cresciuta con uno “stato d’animo di gruppo”. Ovviamente le band locali e tutti ci hanno completamente ispirato a suonare anche gli strumenti, all’epoca.

“Hail to The Heroes” è il terzo album della band, le differenze rispetto agli altri due?
È sicuramente molto diverso dal nostro primo album. Volevamo che questo album suonasse alla grande con una batteria massiccia e tutto il resto. Potrebbe essere un po’ più vicino al nostro secondo album ”Rock The Highway”, ma molto più raffinato e maturato in molti modi. Potrebbe anche essere più pesante di qualsiasi cosa abbiamo fatto in passato.

Canti con grande potenza e rabbia, perché? Cosa vuoi dichiarare con il tuo modo di cantare?
Penso di essere sempre stato attratto dal lato ribelle del metal. Ciò si riflette sul mio modo di cantare, specialmente sulle canzoni più pesanti e veloci. Per me il metal è questione di attitudine e adrenalina. È come “Svegliati”.

Qual è il significato del titolo e dei testi dell’album?
Abbiamo scritto appositamente la canzone “Hail To The Heroes” come tributo a tutta la scena metal degli anni ’80. Le band dell’epoca erano responsabili dell’ispirazione di migliaia di bambini che imparavano la chitarra e altri strumenti e noi eravamo alcuni di quei ragazzi. È quasi come se l’intera cosa fosse considerata estinta oggi ed è semplicemente triste e inaccettabile per persone come noi, le cui vite ruotano attorno a quello specifico stile musicale. Ci siamo sentiti come se l’intero album fosse un tributo appropriato a quegli “Heroes” e altro ancora.

Quali sono le tue influenze musicali?
Tutto dalla scena NWOBHM, The Sunset Strip, hard rock anni ’70. Ma devo dire che gli Iron Maiden sono stati la mia più grande ispirazione di tutti i tempi.

C’è una scena hard rock/heavy metal in India?
Sì, naturalmente. Anche se non è più come una volta decenni prima, proprio come altrove.

Ci sono collaborazioni nei vari brani, come hai scelto questi musicisti?
Faccio anche parte di un progetto guidato da Chris Adler. Si chiama Firstborne. È iniziato nel 2019, mentre Chris era in tournée in India. Nello stesso anno, ho anche fatto amicizia con Rowan Robertson, online. Stavamo discutendo di fare un po’ di musica insieme. Quindi questa volta ho colto l’occasione per invitare tutti sul nostro brano, “Fear Of Rock ‘n’Roll”.

Come hai conosciuto la Frontiers Records?
Abbiamo cercato di entrare in contatto con l’etichetta nel corso degli anni. È stato durante l’inizio del nostro secondo album, abbiamo scritto loro di nuovo. Hanno risposto, ma immagino volessero vedere la direzione che stavamo prendendo. Non appena abbiamo pubblicato la nostra canzone “Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Here To Stay”, abbiamo sentito di nuovo loro e questa volta abbiamo parlato di possibili album. Abbiamo pensato per molto tempo che la Frontiers sarebbe stato un abbinamento perfetto per GATC e siamo contenti che abbia funzionato.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. Girish And The Chronicles, presents the band, how was it born?
It’s a really long story actually. But in a nutshell, we’re just a Group of guys from a small town, dreaming big I guess. Yogesh (The bass player/Producer) and me used to learn songs ever since we were kids and we knew what we wanted to do in life, from a very early stage. (For those who don’t know, he’s my younger brother).  By college we had already performed in quite a few shows and it was during that time (At around 2006), I met Suraz, who soon introduced me to Nagen. We soon formed a band and started performing at small venues. However, I left for the bigger cities to find more opportunities and a possibility to relocate the band. About two years went and I came back to Sikkim, my home state, where I met with Yogesh and started recording my first ever single. I also used to perform at a local venue, where Nagen joined me once more. Just after a couple of months a debut single named “Angel”, got released. Although a solo project at first, we had already begun performing together and by the time we headed towards the college level festivals, which is huge in India, Suraz joined us once again forming the permanent line up. The solo project was renamed to Girish and The Chronicles. One of the main reasons was that my name was doing well and we were getting various invitations to such festivals.

Rock is thought to be a popular musical genre in the West, but you and your band are proof that rock is universal. Is that so for you?
Yes rock has always existed in India. With older bands from the ‘80s/‘90s such as Parikrama, Rock Machine/Indus Creed, introducing the hard rock genre to a lot of youngsters, specially in the hilly areas such as Sikkim. It sure had a decline but bands like us are responsible for the new breed of the genre, reintroducing it to a newer generation and crowd. There was a huge void in between, specially in the 2000s, where the scene had been taken over by heavier genres. All in all, it’s scattered but there sure are a lot of Rock enthusiasts and GATC’s main motive had always been the revival of such a sound and making it relevant again. We succeeded in doing that in a lot of ways, I guess.

What are the reasons that convinced you to create your own band? Who or what?
Ever since I dropped my engineering college, I had only one purpose in life, which was to start a band that would stay for a long time. I would watch documentaries of various bands such as Led Zeppelin and get inspired. I had already been in a few bands since my school days, so it was all about passion than anything. Our entire generation in school days infact grew up with a “band frame of mind”. Ofcourse the local bands and all totally inspired us to take up instruments as well, back then.

“Hail to The Heroes” is the third album of the band, the differences compared to the other two?
It’s certainly very different from our first album. We wanted this album to sound huge with massive drums and all that. It could be a bit closer to our second album Rock the Highway though, but much more refined and matured in many ways. It might even be heavier than anything we’ve done in the past.

You sing with great power and anger, why? What do you want to declare with your way of singing?
I think I’ve always been attracted to the rebellious side of metal. That reflects on my singing a lot, specially on the heavier, faster songs. For me metal is about attitude and adrenaline. It’s like “Wake up”.

What is the meaning of the title and the lyrics of the album?
We specially wrote the song Hail To The Heroes as a tribute to the whole ‘80s metal scene. The bands from the era were responsible for inspiring thousands of kids picking up the guitar and other instruments and we were some of those kids. It’s almost like the whole thing is considered to be extinct today and it’s just sad and unacceptable to people like us, who’s lives revolve around that specific style of music. We felt like the whole album was a fitting tribute to those “Heroes” and more.

What are your musical influences?
Everything from the NWOBHM, The Sunset Strip scene, 70s hard rock. But we gotta say, Iron Maiden has been my my all time biggest inspiration.

Is there a hard rock / heavy metal scene in India?
Yes ofcourse. Although it’s not like how it used to be decades before, just like anywhere else.

There are collaborations in the various songs, how did you choose these musicians?
I am also a part of a project headed by Chris Adler. It’s named Firstborne. It started in 2019, while Chris was touring India. While in the same year, I also made friends with Rowan Robertson, online. We had been discussing making some music together. So this time, I took the opportunity of inviting everyone on our track, “Rock ‘n Roll fever.

How did you meet Frontiers Records?
We had been trying to get in touch with the label through the years. It was during the beginning of our second album, we wrote to them again. They did respond but I guess they wanted to see the direction we were taking. As soon as we released our song Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay, we heard from them again and this time talking about possible albums. We had felt for quite a long time that Frontiers would be a perfect match for GATC and we’re glad that it worked out.

Are you planning a tour?
We’re hoping to, really.
