FLOWER FACE – Intervista su “The shark in your water”

In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “THE SHARK IN YOUR WATER” ho intervistato FLOWER FACE.

Ciao Ruby, piacere di averti sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Vuoi iniziare raccontandoci quali sono stati i tuoi primi ascolti musicali?
Grazie per questa intervista! Quando ero giovane, il mio gusto per la musica era fortemente influenzato dai miei genitori, quindi sono cresciuta ascoltando molto Tom Waits, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, The Tragically Hip, The Beatles, The White Stripes… grandi dischi, e sicuramente mi hanno aiutato a diventare una cantautrice.

Come è nata la scelta di sedersi al pianoforte, tutto in modalità DIY senza insegnanti?
Ho preso lezioni di piano da quando avevo 5 anni fino a circa 16. Sono autodidatta in canto e chitarra, ma sicuramente non piano, devo molto ai miei insegnanti di pianoforte! 

Hai vissuto un’esperienza traumatica, come ti sei ripresa? La musica ti ha aiutato in questo?
Quando avevo 17 anni, mi hanno diagnosticato un cancro alle ovaie in stadio 3. Ho dovuto subire un intervento chirurgico serio e 6 mesi di chemioterapia. La musica mi ha sicuramente aiutato a superarlo e, anche, a poter raccontare la mia storia in seguito. 

Ho trovato il tuo disco bellissimo, quale concept hai voluto inserire? La pandemia ha influito sul tuo lavoro?
Volevo che fosse scuro, ma mantenesse comunque un poco di calore. La pandemia ha influenzato molto la mia vita, come ha fatto per la maggior parte delle persone, ma non questo album perché era finito prima dell’inizio della pandemia. 

Ho sentito un inserto di archi in Paper doll, è corretto?
Sì, ci sono vere corde in molte delle canzoni dell’album! Mike Tompa, un suonatore d’archi di Toronto, è arrivato con diversi strumenti a corda e ha registrato tutte le parti. 

Bad astrology esce dal percorso dell’album, è molto rock, hai voluto sperimentare o pensi a brani più potenti per il futuro?
Questa è sicuramente la canzone più sperimentale e diversa dell’album, ma mi piacerebbe fare di più in futuro in questo senso. 

Progetti futuri? Un tour magari? In Italia ti vedremo?
Spero di poter iniziare con il prossimo album quest’anno, e presto ci saranno spettacoli dal vivo! Mi piacerebbe venire in Italia.

Hi Ruby, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. Do you want to start by telling us what your first musical listenings were?
Thank you for having me! When I was young, my taste in music was heavily influenced by my parents – so I grew up listening to a lot of Tom Waits, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, The Tragically Hip, The Beatles, The White Stripes… great stuff, and definitely helped me to become a songwriter. 

How did you decide to sit at the piano, all in DIY mode without teachers?
I took piano lessons from when I was 5 until around 16. I’m self taught in vocals and guitar, but definitely not piano – I owe a lot to my piano teachers!

Did you go through a traumatic experience, how did you recover? Did music help you with this?
When I was 17, I had stage 3 ovarian cancer. I had to have a serious surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy. Music definitely did help me to get through it and also to be able to tell my story afterwards. 

I found your record beautiful, which concept did you want to include? Has the pandemic affected your work?
I wanted it to be dark, but still maintain some warmth. The pandemic influenced my life a lot, as it did to most people, but not this album because it was finished before the pandemic started.

I heard a string insert in Paper doll, is that correct?
Yes, there are real strings on several of the songs on the album! Mike Tompa, a string player from Toronto, came in with several string instruments and recorded all the parts.

Bad astrology comes off the track of the album, it’s very rock, did you want to experiment or are you thinking of more powerful songs for the future?
That is definitely the most experimental and different song on the album, but I’d love to do more like it in the future.

Future projects? A tour maybe? Will we see you in Italy?
I hopefully can get started on the next album this year, and there will be live shows soon! I’d love to come to Italy.
