ELLES BAILEY – Intervista su “Beneath the neon glow”
In occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo album “BENEATH THE NEON GLOW” ho intervistato ELLES BAILEY.
Buongiorno Elles, complimenti per il tuo bellissimo album in uscita, l’ho ascoltato tante volte. Vuoi iniziare raccontandoci come ti sei avvicinata alla musica? Quali sono stati i tuoi primi ascolti? C’è una figura che ti ha particolarmente ispirato?
Non credo ci sia stato un momento particolare o un artista particolare che abbia dato il via a tutto, ma sono cresciuta circondata dalla musica, mio padre suonava in una band rock and roll e fin da piccola guardavo i concerti, cercavo di salire sul palco con la sua band e mi piaceva tantissimo. Penso di essere nata per il palco, è stato solo un caso capirne il percorso!
Della tua esperienza in ospedale a 3 anni hai ricordi? La tua voce deriva anche da questo?
Sì, lo so. Infatti, il mio primo ricordo è di aver dovuto imparare di nuovo a camminare. Ero in una stanza d’ospedale e un’infermiera mi teneva su, stavo cercando di camminare, ma le mie gambe continuavano a cedere… questo è il mio primo ricordo! E sì, la mia voce è un sottoprodotto del coma trascorso in quel periodo. So quanto sono stata fortunata ad aver portato con me questa voce e questa storia.
La tua passione per il pianoforte come è nata? Che importanza riveste nella tua composizione musicale?
Ho suonato il pianoforte fin da piccola, ma sinceramente l’ho odiato fino ai 13 anni. Non mi è stato insegnato quello che volevo imparare e solo quando ho cambiato insegnante, e mia madre ha detto alla nuova insegnante: “Insegnale a scrivere canzoni come Elton John”, ho iniziato ad amare davvero lo strumento. Ha un ruolo importante nelle mie ballate… E mi piace comporre al pianoforte, ma non lo faccio troppo spesso, altrimenti finirei per pubblicare un album di ballate, non di rock, e mi piace scatenarmi!
L’esperienza del covid ti ha segnato particolarmente? L’ispirazione per l’album ha preso forma da quel periodo? Parli di esperienze molto forti e dolorose nella composizione del disco.
Non credo che nessuno possa dire di non essere stato toccato dalla pandemia, è una storia condivisa che ha influenzato così tante persone, in così tanti modi diversi. Non direi che questo disco sia stato ispirato o ha preso forma in quel periodo: è stato il mio ultimo album (Shining in the Half Light). Beneath the neon glow è stato scritto principalmente nel 2023, tuttavia ho fatto molto “autoapprendimento e guarigione” durante questo periodo e ho approfondito molto il mio passato, che immagino sia da dove proviene il dolore.
Tanti pezzi potenti e tre ballad tra power ballad e la malinconia di Turn it off, ti trovi bene sia con pezzi rock che lenti senza nessun problema?
Amo entrambi: mi piace scatenarmi con i migliori, ma adoro anche i momenti intimi: a volte sono i più speciali, i più veri.
Il sound è esplosivo, hai messo assieme una band di alto livello, come l’hai composta?
Suoniamo insieme da molto tempo e mi sento molto fortunata che vogliano condividere il loro talento con me! Joe Wilkins (chitarra) e io suoniamo e scriviamo insieme dal 2014, Jonny Henderson (tastiere) dal 2016, Matthew Jones (batteria) dal 2017, Matthew Waer (basso) dal 2019 e Demi Marriner dal 2021! Tutti talenti con cui condivido lo studio e il palco! Devo fare un grande ringraziamento a Katey Brooks e Liam Cromby che condividono il loro talento vocale anche in questo album, e a Pete Fraser (sax), Holly Carter (pedal steel) e Cormac Neeson (arpa) che aggiungono un tocco di brillantezza extra all’album!
C’è un tuo brano preferito?
Ogni volta che ascolto l’album, è Leave The Light che salta pit. Lo adoro, adoro il feeling e l’onestà e la chitarra di Joe è irreale!
Hai sentito musica interessante in questo periodo da consigliare?
Adoro Brent Cobb, The Wood Brothers e al momento sto ascoltando i mix del nuovo disco di Demi Marriner che non è ancora uscito. È fantastico e non vedo l’ora che lo pubblichi!
Il disco che vorresti portare con te su di un’isola deserta?
L’omonimo album debutto di John Prines.
Progetti futuri? Un tour? Magari in Italia?
Amo l’Italia e mi piacerebbe molto farla in tour! Al momento, però, è in corso un tour nel Regno Unito e nei Paesi Bassi, con alcune date in Germania nel nuovo anno! Forse l’Italia per l’estate? Tu porti il gelato e io porterò la musica: sembra un’accoppiata perfetta!

Good morning Elles, congratulations on your beautiful album coming out, I’ve listened to it many times. Do you want to start by telling us how you got into music? What were your first listens? Is there a figure who particularly inspired you?
I don’t think there was a particular moment or a particular artist that started the ball rolling but I was surrounded by music growing up, my dad played in a Rock and roll band and from a very young age I was watching gigs, trying to get on stage with my his band and just loved it. I think I was born for the stage, it was just a case a figuring out the journey!
Do you have any memories of your experience in hospital at 3 years old? Does your voice also come from this?
I do yes. In fact my first memory is having to learn to walk again. I was in a hospital room and a nurse was holding me up, and I’m trying to walk but my legs just kept buckling over … that’s my first memory! And yes – my voice is a by product of being in a coma for that time. I know how lucky I am to walk away with this voice and story.
How did your passion for the piano arise? What importance does it have in your musical composition?
I played piano from a young age but honestly I hated it until I was 13. I wasn’t being taught what I wanted to learn and it was only when I moved teachers and my mum said to my new teacher – “teach her to write songs like Elton John” that I truly started to love the instrument. It plays a big part in my ballads …. And I do like composing on the piano but don’t do it too often – or I would just end up releasing an album of ballads not rockers and I do like to rock out!
Has the Covid experience particularly affected you? Did the inspiration for the album take shape from that period? You talk about very strong and painful experiences in the composition of the album.
I don’t think anyone can say they Weren’t affected by the pandemic, it’s a shared history that has affected so many people in so many different ways. I wouldn’t say this record was inspired or took shape during that time – that was my last album (Shining in the Half Light.) Beneath the neon glow was mostly written in 2023 however I did a lot of “self learning and healing” during this time and delved a lot into my past which I guess is where the pain has come from.
Many powerful pieces and three ballads between power ballads and the melancholy of Turn it off, do you feel comfortable with both rock and slow pieces without any problem?
I love both – I love to rock out with the best of them, but I love intimate moments – sometimes they’re the most special, the most real.
The sound is explosive, you have put together a high level band, how did you compose it?
We have been playing together for a long time and I feel very blessed that they share their talents with me! Joe Wilkins (guitar) and I have been playing and writing together since 2014, Jonny Henderson (Keys) since 2016, Matthew Jones(drums) since 2017, Matthew Waer (bass) since 2019 and Demi Marriner since 2021! All such talents that I get to share the studio and stage with.! I do need to say a massive shoutout To Katey Brooks and Liam Cromby who share their vocal talents on this album as well, and to Pete Fraser (sax), Holly Carter (pedal steel) and Cormac Neeson (harp) who add some beautiful extra sparkly to the album!
Is there a favorite song of yours?
Every time I hear the album it’s Leave The Light on that jumps pit. I just love it, I love the feel and the honesty and Joes guitar is unreal!
Have you heard any interesting music during this period that you recommend?
I love Brent Cobb, The Wood Brothers and I’m currently just listening to the mixes of Demi Marriner’s new record that isn’t even out yet – It’s amazing and I can’t wait until she releases it!
The record you would like to take with you to a desert island?
John Prines self titled Debut album.
Future projects? A tour? Maybe in Italy?
I love Italy and would love to tour it! Currently though it’s a Uk and Netherlands tour for now, with some dates in Germany in the new year! Maybe Italy for summer? You bring the gelato and I’ll bring the tunes – that sounds like a match made in heaven!
