DO NOTHING – Intervista su “Snake sideways” e tour italiano
La band di Nottingham per la prima volta in Italia con ‘Snake Sideways‘, il nuovo album pubblicato a fine giugno ed ampiamente accolto dalla critica musicale.
Ciao, piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Come si sono formati i Do Nothing?
Ciao! Grazie per averci ospitato. Ci conosciamo da quando eravamo bambini e da molti anni giochiamo insieme in varie forme. Questa particolare band è stata fondata 5 o 6 anni fa.
Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti? Le band cui vi siete richiamati per creare il vostro stile?
Quando eravamo più giovani ci legavamo tutti a band come Spoon e Grizzly Bear. Penso che le mie band preferite siano quelle che trovano un buon equilibrio tra la scrittura coesa e l’assunzione di rischi.
Handshake mi richiama suoni brit-pop, Zero Dollar Bill il post-punk, Snake sideways un misto maturo, alternative rock forse. Cosa ne pensate? Come si è evoluto il vostro suono nel tempo e che direzione avete voluto seguire?
Mi sembra giusto! Cerco di non analizzarlo troppo, ma penso che in generale ci siamo mossi in una direzione più melodica negli ultimi anni. Ora che il primo album è finito, potremmo andare ovunque!
LeBron James è un singolo molto evocativo, ha un significato profondo, cosa ne pensate adesso a distanza di tempo? La scelta del titolo rispecchia una passione per il basket?
Non sono sicuro! Ne siamo certamente orgogliosi. Penso che serva a uno scopo utile nel nostro catalogo. Alla gente piace ascoltarlo dal vivo e noi siamo felici di offrirlo. Purtroppo, non ha nulla a che fare con il basket: non sono un tipo molto sportivo.
Ora siete in tour, che importanza ha per voi la dimensione live?
L’elemento live è sempre stato una parte importante di ciò che facciamo. Il materiale precedente, in particolare, è stato sviluppato suonandolo dal vivo e modificandolo di conseguenza. Questo tour è stata la nostra prima opportunità di vedere la gente reagire alla nuova musica, ed è stato estremamente bello.
Cosa promettete ai fans italiani che verranno a vedervi?
Hmm. Immagino solo che faremo del nostro meglio per dare loro un bello spettacolo. Penso che la scaletta su cui abbiamo lavorato per il tour finora abbia una buona struttura, nel senso che è un viaggio musicale completo e potente.
Consigli di ascolto a parte la vostra splendida musica?
Al momento, The Blue Nile! Art-pop anni ’80 prodotto in modo impeccabile da Glasgow. È tutto molto lento e ponderato. La canzone “The Downtown Lights” è particolarmente spettacolare.
Progetti futuri?
Stiamo già lavorando al prossimo album e siamo molto entusiasti di capire dove andrà a finire. Grazie per le domande e vi aspettiamo a novembre!

Hello, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. How did Do Nothing form?
Hi! Thanks for having us. We’ve known each other since we were kids, and have been playing together in various forms for many years. This particular band was started 5 or 6 years ago.
What were your first listens? Which bands did you refer to to create your style?
When we were younger we all bonded over bands like Spoon and Grizzly Bear. I think my favourite bands are ones that strike a good balance between cohesive songwriting, and risk-taking.
Handshakes reminds me of Brit-pop sounds, Zero Dollar Bill post-punk, Snake Sideways a mature mix, alternative rock perhaps. What do you think? How has your sound evolved over time and what direction did you want to follow?
That sounds about right to me! I try not to analyse it too much, but I think that generally we’ve been moving in a more melodic direction over the past few years. Now that the first album is out of the way, we could go anywhere!
LeBron James is a very evocative single, it has a profound meaning, what do you think of it now after some time? Does the choice of title reflect a passion for basketball?
I’m not sure! We’re certainly proud of it; I think it serves a useful purpose in our catalogue. Folks like hearing it live, and we’re happy to deliver it. Sadly, it has nothing to do with basketball – I’m not a very sporty fella.
Now you’re on tour, how important is the live dimension for you?
The live element has always been a big part of what we do. The earlier material in particular was developed by playing it live, and tweaking it accordingly. This tour has been our first opportunity to see people react to the new music, and it’s been extremely lovely.
What do you promise the Italian fans who will come to see you?
Hmm. I guess only that we’ll try our very best to give them a good show. I think the setlist we’ve been working with for the tour so far has a good structure to it, in that it goes on a bit of a journey.
Listening recommendations aside from your wonderful music?
At the moment, The Blue Nile! Immaculately produced 80s art-pop from Glasgow. It’s all very slow-burning and considered. The song “The Downtown Lights” is particularly spectacular.
Future projects?
We’re already working on the next album, and we’re very excited about figuring out where to go with it. Thank you for the questions, and we look forward to seeing you in November!
