DESPISED ICON – Intervista al chitarrista Eric Jarrin

Ho raggiunto telefonicamente il gentilissimo Eric Jarrin, chitarrista della deathcore metal band canadese Despised Icon che, il prossimo 15 novembre, pubblicherà il sesto album, “Purgatory”, sotto l’etichetta Nuclear Blast.

Ciao Eric, benvenuto sulle pagine della webzine Tuttorock, prima di tutto, congratulazioni per il nuovo album, lo sto apprezzando molto. Purgatory, perché questo titolo?

Ciao Marco, grazie per i complimenti. Il titolo di questo album è nato da una discussione con Alex, il nostro cantante. Non è un qualcosa di religioso, abbiamo deciso di usare la parola “Purgatorio” perché dà l’immagine perfetta delle difficoltà, delle sfide e delle scelte che le persone sono costrette a fare in ogni singolo giorno. Sai, il tempo può essere bianco o nero, giusto o sbagliato, ma può anche essere una via di mezzo in cui ti fermi a riflettere.

Rispetto ai vostri precedenti cinque album sento suoni più sperimentali e più melodie. Come sono nate le canzoni?

È bello che tu abbia colto questa differenza. Abbiamo avuto un approccio diverso nello scrivere questo album rispetto a quelli precedenti, dove lavoravamo partendo da un riff e ne cercavamo immediatamente un altro per la canzone successiva. Questa volta ci siamo presi i nostri tempi, cercando di sperimentare nuovi suoni. Alex veniva nel mio studio ogni volta che aveva un’idea, ci sedevamo insieme e scrivevamo un paio di minuti di musica, poi ci incontravamo la settimana successiva. Quindi, alla fine del mese, assemblavamo le parti migliori che avevamo creato. Molte canzoni sono nate in questo modo, con un approccio molto ma molto diverso.

Una delle mie canzoni preferite di questo album è “Slow burning”. Parla della società attuale che sta bruciando lentamente?

Alex ha scritto il testo ispirato dal film Terminator 2 e dalle cose che accadono nel mondo, tipo i cambiamenti climatici, le guerre, la corsa agli armamenti nucleari, e da alcune serie di fantascienza come Black Mirror.

L’intro strumentale “Dernier Souffle” ha il titolo in lingua francese e, il brano numero 6, Vies D’Anges, è cantato nella lingua che parlate in Quebec. È un modo per rimanere attaccati alle vostre origini?

Assolutamente sì, l’inglese è la nostra seconda lingua, quindi è molto importante per noi scrivere in francese. Nei nostri album precedenti abbiamo inserito alcune canzoni nella nostra prima lingua, quindi abbiamo deciso di scriverne una anche per “Purgatory”.

Quant’è importante la figura di Yannick St-Amand, il vostro tuttofare?

Noi consideriamo Yannick come il settimo membro dei Despised Icon, all’inizio era un chitarrista della band ma, nel corso degli anni, è diventato l’ingegnere del suono e produce tutti i nostri album, è impossibile per noi pensare di produrre qualcosa senza di lui. Ogni volta che andiamo in tour è sempre con noi.

Voi venite dal Canada e siete considerati i pionieri del genere deathcore. C’è qualcuno nella scena attuale di quel tipo di musica che tu ritieni interessante?

Sì, c’è una band di ragazzi canadesi, si chiamano AngelMaker e vengono dal Canada occidentale, mi piace molto quello che fanno, esistono dal 2011, hanno catturato l’essenza dei deathcore, il tipo di musica che abbiamo creato 17 anni fa, hanno suonato con noi nelle date canadesi del nostro tour.

Siete nati come band nel 2002 e, dopo 8 anni, nel 2010, vi siete sciolti per poi riformarvi nel 2014. Rifareste tutto o vi pentite di questo scioglimento?

No, non ci pentiamo di questa scelta. Quando ci siamo sciolti nel 2010 non pensavamo che saremmo stati di nuovo in tour insieme. Avevamo bisogno di una pausa, molti di noi hanno ora diverse carriere musicali, molti si sono creati una famiglia. Per noi la musica è una passione, siamo tutti coinvolti nella scena musicale locale, abbiamo fatto un paio di spettacoli insieme di nuovo nel 2015 e ci siamo detti, “perché non torniamo a scrivere musica insieme?”. È stata una grande idea, ora i nostri figli sono cresciuti e abbiamo più tempo per la nostra musica. Nessun rimpianto!

Avete programmato un nuovo tour in Europa e magari tornerete anche in Italia?

Vogliamo sicuramente tornare in Europa per promuovere “Purgatory” e lo faremo nel 2020, ora siamo concentrati sul tour in Nord America.

Per coloro che non ti conoscono, puoi parlarmi un pò degli artisti che hanno ispirato la tua carriera musicale?

Ho 41 anni e ho iniziato a suonare molti anni fa, ho avuto la mia prima chitarra nel 1991, mi piacevano, come molti ragazzi dell’epoca, band come Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Slayer, poi ho iniziato ad ascoltare band più heavy statunitensi come Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary. Quando abbiamo formato i Despised Icon, nel 2002, Alex ed io ascoltavamo molte band come Dying Fetus, Devourment e band di slam death metal di New York. Comunque ho anche studiato la chitarra classica al college, ecco perché puoi sentire alcune cose classiche in una traccia come Moving On o in Dernier Stuff, l’intro del nuovo album.

Grazie mille per questa intervista, vuoi dire qualcosa ai lettori di Tuttorock e ai tuoi fan?

Spero di rivedervi in Italia, ricordo quando abbiamo suonato al Vidia Club di Cesena, non l’ultima volta ma circa dieci anni fa, abbiamo visitato il porticciolo di Cesenatico, piccolo ma bello, qui non abbiamo porti progettati di Leonardo da Vinci come nel tuo Paese… Ricordo i vostri ottimi gelati, i migliori al mondo. Grazie per il vostro supporto, i Despised Icon amano l’Italia e vogliono tornare da voi il prossimo anno. Ciao!

I reached by telephone the very kind Eric Jarrin, guitarist of the Canadian deathcore metal band Despised Icon who, next November 15th, will release the sixth studio album, “Purgatory”, under the label Nuclear Blast.

Hi Eric, welcome to the pages of the webzine Tuttorock, first of all, congratulations for the new album called “Purgatory” of your band Despised Icon, that will be released on November, 15th, I’m really appreciating it. Purgatory, why this title?

Hi Marco, thanks for the compliments. The concept of this album came out from a discussion with Alex, our singer. It is not a religious title, we decided to use the word “Purgatory” because it gives the perfect image of the difficulties, challenges an choices that people are forced to make in every single day. You know, the weather can be black or white, right or wrong but it can also be a middle ground where you stop to reflect.

Compared to your previous five albums, I hear sounds more experimental and more melodies. How were the songs born?

It’s nice that you caught this difference. We had a different approach to writing this album than the previous ones, where we worked from a riff and immediately looked for a riff for the next song. This time we took our time, trying to experiment with new sounds. Alex came to my home studio every time he had an idea, we sat down together and we wrote a couple of minutes of music, then we met the following week. Then, at the end of the month, we assembled the best parts we had created, many songs were born on this way, with a very different approach.

One of my favourite songs of this album is “Slow burning”. Does it speak about the current society that is burning slowly?

Alex wrote the text inspired by the movie Terminator 2 and by the things that happens in the world, climate change, wars, the nuclear arms race, as well as by some sci-fi series like Black Mirror.

The instrumental intro “Dernier Souffle” has the title in French language and the track number 6, Vies D’Anges, is sung in the language spoken in Quebec, is it a way to remain attached to your origins?

Absolutely yes, English is our second language, so it is very important for us to write in French, in our previous albums we have inserted some songs in our first language so we have decided to write one for “Purgatory” as well.

How important is the figure of Yannick St-Amand, your handyman?

We consider Yannick as the seventh member of the Despised Icon, in the beginning he was a guitarist of the band but, during the years, he became the engineer of the sound and he produces all our albums, it is impossible for us to think of producing something without him. Every time we go on tour he is always with us.

You come from Canada and you are considered the pioneers of the genre deathcore. Is there anyone in the current scene of that kind of music that you consider interesting?

Yes, there’s a Canadian band, it’s called AngelMaker and it’s from the West of Canada, I really like what they do, they exist from 2011, they’ve caught the essence of deathcore, the kind of music we created 17 years ago, they played with us on the Canadian dates of our tour.

You formed in 2002 and, after 8 years, in 2010 you broke up and then reformed in 2014. Would you do it all again or do you regret that disbanding?

No, we do not regret that choice. When we broke up in 2010 we didn’t think we would be again on tour together. We needed a stop, many of us now have different musical careers, many have started a family. For us music is a passion, we are all involved in the local music scene, we did a couple of shows together in 2015 and we said “why don’t we go back to writing music together?”. It was a great idea, now the children grew up and we have more time for our music. No regrets!

Have you planned a new tour in Europe and maybe you will also come back to Italy?

We certainly want to return to Europe to promote “Purgatory” and we will do it in 2020, now we are focused on touring in North America.

For those who don’t know you, can you tell me a little about the artists that inspired your career?

I am 41 years old and I started playing many years ago, I got my first guitar in 1991, I liked, like many guys of the time, bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Slayer, I started playing by listening to these bands then I started listening more heavy bands from the USA like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary. When we formed the Despised Icon, in 2002 Alex and I listened to many bands like Dying Fetus, Devourment and slam death metal bands from New York. However I also studied classical guitar in college, that’s why you can hear some classical stuff in a track like Moving On or in Dernier Stuff, the intro of the new album.

Thank you very much for this interview, do you want to say something to the readers of Tuttorock and to your fans?

I hope to see you again in Italy, I remember when we played at the Vidia Club in Cesena, not the last time, but about ten years ago, we visited the small port of Cesenatico, small but beautiful, here we have no ports designed by Leonardo da Vinci like there in your country… I remember your excellent ice creams, the best in the world.
