DELREI – Intervista al musicista che presenta “Desolation And Radiation”
Ho avuto il piacere di intervistare il chitarrista Alessandro Mercanzin, già attivo da anni nella scena rock alternativa italiana. Il suo primo lavoro a nome Delrei “Desolation And Radiation” è un ambizioso tentativo di album strumentale che fa da colonna sonora a un ipotetico scenario post-apocalittico da guerra nucleare.
Ciao Alessandro e benvenuto su TuttoRock, ti chiedo subito come sta andando sia a livello di ascolti che dal punto di vista della critica l’album “Desolation and Radiation”, da me apprezzatissimo.
Ciao Marco, innanzitutto vi ringrazio per avermi dato l’opportunità di essere qui oggi. Il disco sta andando molto bene a livello di ascolti e anche dal punto di vista della critica. Ho ricevuto molti feedback positivi sia in Italia che all’estero, sono molto contento di come è stato recepito.
Come nasce solitamente un brano del progetto Delrei?
Generalmente cerco l’ispirazione. Potrebbe essere la storia di un libro, un film o la sua colonna sonora, a volte un‘immagine, un album che attiri la mia attenzione. Se sono in giro solitamente registro la mia voce o fischietto una melodia con il cellulare per non farmela sfuggire. Una volta che sono davanti al computer, inizio a sperimentare.
La mia idea per questo disco era di creare un sound che fosse innovativo e allo stesso tempo riconoscibile. Sono molto soddisfatto del risultato che è stato raggiunto assieme al produttore Maurizio Baggio (the Soft Moon, Boy Harsher).
Si sentono principalmente le influenze di Ennio Morricone, è lui la tua maggior fonte di ispirazione?
Sicuramente le musiche del Maestro fanno parte del mio background, ho apprezzato fin da bambino le sue opere intramontabili nei film spaghetti western. Per restare in tema di nomi importanti ho da sempre grande ammirazione per il duo D.Lynch/A.Badalamenti con le loro atmosfere oniriche assieme ai film e alle colonne sonore di J. Carpenter.
Questo album è molto cinematografico, non hai mai pensato di proporre i tuoi brani per qualche colonna sonora?
Assolutamente sì, sarebbe il mio sogno nel cassetto riuscire ad entrare nel mondo dei sync, la porta è sempre aperta a collaborazioni.
Quando e com’è avvenuto il tuo avvicinamento al mondo della musica?
Mio fratello maggiore aveva preso una chitarra acustica così attorno ai 13 anni ho iniziato a suonarla anch’io. In casa girava molta musica ero sempre interessato ad ascoltare i dischi e a sfogliare le copertine.
Qualche anno dopo ho preso parte alla mia prima band (Mudlarks) con cui ho avuto modo di suonare in Italia, Francia , Germania e USA . È stata una grande esperienza per gli anni a venire.
Hai qualche data live in programma?
Al momento nessuna ma qualcosa bolle in pentola. Proprio in questi giorni sto mettendo assieme i pezzi per proporli dal vivo. Mi piacerebbe abbinare la musica ad un video in background, work in progress!
Con quale formazione ti presenterai sul palco?
L’idea sarebbe quella di partire con pochi elementi, sicuramente ci saranno delle basi a cui verrà aggiunta la chitarra/armonica che saranno suonate assieme ad un batterista con un set abbastanza minimal.
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti musicali?
A Novembre uscirà un brano cantato in collaborazione con la band di Nashville 6 Gun Justice tramite l’etichetta LWM Records .
Inoltre, recentemente ho preso parte ad una compilation tributo ai Ramones prodotta da Marc Urselli che vedrà la luce grazie all’etichetta californiana Magnetic Eye. È un progetto a cui tengo molto e che non vedo l’ora di poter condividere in quanto fan di lunga data dei Ramones…onetwothreefour!!!

I had the pleasure of interviewing guitarist Alessandro Mercanzin, already active for years in the Italian alternative rock scene. His first album under the Delrei name “Desolation And Radiation” is an ambitious attempt at an instrumental album that serves as the soundtrack to a hypothetical post-apocalyptic nuclear war scenario.
Hi Alessandro and welcome to TuttoRock, I’ll ask you straight away how the album “Desolation and Radiation” (which I greatly appreciated) is going both in terms of ratings and from a critical point of view.
Hi Marco, first of all I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be here today. The album is going very well in terms of ratings and also from a critical point of view. I received a lot of positive feedbacks both in Italy and abroad, I am very happy with how it has been received.
How does a song from the Delrei usually come about?
I generally seek for inspiration. It could be the story of a book, a film or its soundtrack, sometimes an image, an album that catches my attention. If I’m out I usually record my voice or whistle a melody on my cell phone so I don’t miss it. Once I’m in front of the computer, I start experimenting.
My idea for this record was to create a sound that was innovative and recognizable at the same time. I am very satisfied with the result that was achieved together with the producer Maurizio Baggio (the Soft Moon, Boy Harsher).
You can mainly hear the influences of Ennio Morricone, is he your main source of inspiration?
The Maestro’s music is certainly part of my background, I have appreciated his timeless works in so many spaghetti western films since I was a child. To stay on the subject of important names, I have always had great admiration for the David Lynch / Angelo Badalamenti duo with their dreamlike atmospheres together with the films and soundtracks of John Carpenter.
This album is very cinematic, have you ever thought about proposing your songs for some soundtrack?
Absolutely yes, it would be my secret dream to be able to enter the world of sync, the door is always open to collaborations.
When and how did you approach the world of music?
My older brother bought an acoustic guitar, around the age of 13 I started playing it too. There was a lot of music at my parent’s house, I was always interested in listening to the records and leafing through the covers.
A few years later I took part in my first band (Mudlarks) with which I had the opportunity to play in Italy, France, Germany and the USA. A great experience for years to come.
Do you have any live dates scheduled?
At the moment I don’t, but something is cooking. Right now I’m putting the pieces together to perform the songs from the album live. I’d like to match the music to a video in the background, work in progress!
If yes, with what formation will you appear on stage?
The idea would be to start with few elements, there will certainly be some bass to which the guitar/harmonica will be added, played together with a drummer with a fairly minimal set.
What are your next musical projects?
A song in collaboration with the Nashville band 6 Gun Justice will be released in November via LWM Records label.
Furthermore, I recently took part in a Ramones tribute compilation produced by the great Marc Urselli which will see the light thanks to the Californian label Magnetic Eye. It’s a project that I care a lot about and that I can’t wait to share as a long-time fan of the Ramones… onetwothreefour!!!
