CRY OF DAWN – Intervista al cantante Goran Edman
Torna con i suoi Cry Of Dawn, Goran Eman, cantante svedese dai mile volti e dalla mille sfumature, la sua ugola si presta e si è prestata a progetti di hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, west coast, AOR e forse è uno di quei cantanti sottovalutati e che meriterebbe più attenzione. In occasione dell’uscita dell’album ”Anthropocene” (leggi qui la recensione), in compagnia del solo Tommy Denander, ho scambiato quattro chiacchiere con lui. In questa intervista ci ha raccontato un pò di lui, di questo suo progetto e di dove l’umanità andrà a finire in un futuro firse troppo tecnologico, Di seguito l’intervista.
Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock. Il ritorno dei Cry Of Dawn dopo tanti anni di silenzio. Parlami della decisione di questo ritorno, perché?
Era una richiesta della Frontiers Records per dare seguito al primo album.
È un ritorno a più suoni AOR, sei d’accordo?
Non sono sicuro. Crossfade è anche piuttosto melodico ma forse più sulla West Coast. Il genere è molto vasto.
Qual è stata l’ispirazione per scrivere le canzoni?
Prima di tutto Tommy ha scritto la musica e Fredrik Blomgren ha aiutato con testi e melodie. L’ho preso da lì, ha cambiato quello che volevo per la produzione finale. L’ispirazione era quella di creare qualcosa di buono insieme per soddisfare la casa discografica e i fan.
Parlami dei testi e del loro significato.
Dal momento che non ho scritto la maggior parte dei testi, penso di essere la persona sbagliata per analizzare ogni canzone tranne i testi che ho cambiato completamente. “Stiamo vivendo la fine del mondo” da ”End Of The World”, è un testo distopico sull’impatto umano sul clima e sull’equilibrio ecologico di questo pianeta. “Sign Of The Times” parla della nostra dipendenza dai social media, “Memory Lane” è una visione sentimentale e nostalgica dei bei vecchi tempi per onorare coloro che ci hanno preceduto.
Il disegno della copertina è molto futuristico, è legato ai testi?
“Anthropocene” è il titolo e questa è l’era dall’inizio della rivoluzione industriale e il tempo presente, il nostro impatto sul pianeta. Da quel punto di vista ha senso. Un cyborg. “We’re living at the end of the world” include Anthropocene nel primo ponte lirico quindi sì, allora è legato a quella canzone.
Un titolo complesso, “Anthropocene”, qual è il suo significato?
Ancora una volta il nostro impatto su questo pianeta. Si riferisce alla sesta estinzione di massa di specie e popolazioni dagli insetti ai mammiferi, al riscaldamento globale ecc.
Hai cantato in gruppi hard rock, heavy metal, AOR, rock progressivo, come moduli la tua voce in tutte queste diverse atmosfere?
Penso di avere un buon orecchio e una buona comprensione degli elementi. Riguarda molto l’energia nella canzone, l’umore e il testo ovviamente, la strumentazione e il suono.
Ad accompagnarti c’è Tommy Denander che suona tutti gli strumenti e produce. Cosa ne pensi di lui come musicista?
Tommy, sì, eccellente musicista. Ha anche scritto la musica, prodotto il video e ideato l’art design per la copertina.
Quali sono le differenze tra i due album per te?
Questo album è fatto da meno persone. Meno songwriters. Più omogeneo quindi naturalmente.
Quali sono le tue influenze musicali?
È difficile da dire. Penso di aver ascoltato tutti i tipi di generi all’epoca in cui hai plasmato e influenzato, ma soprattutto progressive e west coast, un po’ di AOR.
Da Yngwie Malmsteen, Kharma, Karmacanic, Street Talk, John Norum e altre collaborazioni, hai qualche aneddoto da raccontare e quale ti è rimasto più nel cuore?
Ci sono molti viaggi e avventure. Ma niente che risalta in questo momento.
Stai organizzando un tour?
No, al momento non ci sono piani.

Sono molto grato che ci siano persone là fuori che apprezzano quello che faccio e tutte le mie collaborazioni. È un viaggio continuo e posso solo sperare per il meglio.

Hello and welcome to Tuttorock. The return of Cry Of Dawn after many years of silence. Tell me about the decision of this comeback, why?
It was a request from Frontiers records to follow up the first album.
It’s a return to more AOR sounds, do you agree?
I’m not sure . Crossfade is also pretty melodic but perhaps more west coast. The genre is very wide.
What was the inspiration for writing the songs?
First of all Tommy wrote the music and Fredrik Blomgren helped out with lyrics and melodies. I took it from there changed what I wanted for the final production. The inspiration was to create something good together to satisfy the record company and the fans.
Tell me about the lyrics and their meaning.
Since I did not write the majority of the lyrics I think I’m the wrong person to analyze every song exept the lyrics I changed completely. “We are living at the end of the world” is a dystoptic lyric about the human impact on this planets climate and ecological balance. “Sign of the times” is about our addiction to social media “Memory lane” is a sentimental nostalgic view of good old times to honor those who went before us.
The cover design is very futuristic, is it related to lyrics?
”Anthropocene” is the title and that is the era from the start of the industrial revolution and present time, our impact on the planet. From that point of view it makes sense. A cyborg. We’re living at the end of the world includes Anthropocene in the lyric first bridge so yes it’s related to that song then.
A complex title, “Anthropocene”, what is its meaning?
Once again our impact on this planet. Relates to 6th mass extinction of spieces and populations from insects to mammals, Global warming etc etc.
You have sung in hard rock, heavy metal, AOR, progressive rock bands, how do you modulate your voice in all these different atmospheres?
I think I have a good ear and understanding of the elements. It’s a lot about the energy in the song, the mood and lyric of course, instrumentation and sound.
Accompanying you is Timmy Denander who plays all instruments and produces. What do you think of him as a musician?
Tommy, yes excellent musician. He also wrote the music, produced the video and came up with the art designe for The cover.
What are the differences between the two albums for you?
This album is made by less people. Less songwriters. More homogeneous then naturally.
What are your musical influences?
Its hard to say .I think I listened to all kind of genres at the time you where shaped and influenced but mostly progressive and west coast, some AOR.
From Yngwie Malmsteen, Kharma, Karmacanic, Street Talk, John Norum and other collaborations, do you have any anecdotes to tell and which one has remained in your heart the most?
There are many trips and adventures. But nothing that stands out right now.
Are you planning a tour?
No there are no plans at the moment.
