BRATS – Intervista alle sorelle Rei e Aya Kuromiya

Sono sorelle, sono giovani e insieme hanno creato una band, le Brats. Suonano punk, metal e alternative rock e hanno tantissima energia che emerge sia nei brani che nelle loro esibizioni live. Ciò che segue è il resoconto dell’intervista con Rei a Aya.

Ciao ragazze e benvenute su Tuttorock.com. Come nascono le Brats? Siete sorelle, è cambiato il vostro rapporto dopo aver creato la band?
Rei Kuromiya: Abbiamo formato la band quando eravamo alle elementari. Forse avremo potuto iniziare anche prima, ma abbiamo cercato di unirci in una band quanto prima.
Aya Kuromiya: Eravamo sempre vicine, ma esibirci insieme ci ha reso ancora più vicine e da allora è rimasto così.
Rei Kuromiya: Ci ha rese veramente anche delle buone amiche. Contiamo l’una sull’altra più di qualunque altro.
Aya Kuromiya: Siamo in grado di stare insieme come famiglia e poi riunirci come membri della band quando è il momento di provare e di suonare dal vivo, in un concerto.Possiamo fare tutto questo molto facilmente e rimanere concentrate quando serve.
Rei Kuromiya: Ci divertiamo molto in entrambe i modi.

Parlatemi di “Karma”, il vostro album. Come sono stati i commenti sui social internazionali?
Aya Kuromiya: Prima di tutto sono sempre felice di sentire e leggere commenti di persone di altri Paesi del mondo che ascoltano la nostra musica.
Rei Kuromiya: Sono molto felice di aver ricevuto una risposta molto forte e positiva sulle nostre canzoni e condivideremo molto presto le nuove versioni 2020 di “Lost Place” e “Kimarigoto” nei prossimi giorni, così i nostri fan capiranno di più i nostri cambiamenti e la nostra crescita come band.
Aya Kuromiya: Quando leggo i commenti dei fan che hanno acquistato la versione ‘band score’ di “Karma” penso “è fantastico!”. Vediamo i video di “PlayKarmaBrats” e ci piace vedere come i fan suonano le nostre canzoni.
Rei Kuromiya: Abbiamo ricevuto anche molti complimenti per l’immagine di copertina, abbiamo lavorato duramente con il nostro fotografo e sono molto felice anche di questo.

Quale è il messaggio dei vostri testi?
Rei Kuromiya: Cantiamo il dolore, le sofferenze e le emozioni negative degli esseri umani.
Aya Kuromiya: Vogliamo condividere la nostra musica con persone che hanno sentimenti dolorosi e senza un posto dove andare.
Rei Kuromiya: Ma questi sentimenti possono trasformarsi in energia positiva se decidi come usarli. Non voglio che nascondano quei sentimenti, voglio che li amino.

State già scrivendo nuovi brano per il successore di “Karma”?
Rei Kuromiya: Certo, penso sempre a nuove canzoni!
Aya Kuromiya: Si e penso anche di poter ricominciare ad suonare dal vivo nel 2021.

Cosa pensate del live streaming? Oggi è un modo per fare concerti in questo periodo di lockdown!
Rei Kuromiya:: Anche noi stiamo facendo concerti in live streaming per il covid-19, è quindi una buona opportunità, un’immagine e un’atmosfera diversa dalle normali esibizioni live. Pensiamo sempre al lavoro di produzione per rendere il live streaming più bello e interessante.
Aya Kuromiya: Si, è così, a causa del covid-19 non possiamo andare all’estero a fare concerti. Quindi chi vuole vedere i nostri concerti al momento deve farlo on line, quindi è positivo, anzi vi invito a guardarli.

Ok, grazie per l’intervista, un messaggio per i vostri fan in Italia!
Rei Kuromiya: Le Brats sono ancora una band giovane del Giappone e dell’estremo Oriente, ma grazie per aver trovato interessante la nostra musica da un Paese lontano.Non sono ancora mai stata in Italia, ma mi piacerebbe molto venirci a suonare!
Aya Kuromiya: Grazie per aver ascoltato la musica delle Brats. Continueremo a fare del nostro meglio e speriamo che arrivi presto il giorno in cui riusciremo a venire a suonare in Italia.

You created BRATS as sisters. How has your relationship with each other changed because of the band?
Rei: We formed the band when we were in elementary school. Maybe we could have started even before that, but we jumped into it as soon as we could.
Aya: We were always close, but performing together made us even closer. And it’s stayed that way ever since.
Rei: It’s made us really good friends. We rely on each other more than on anyone else.
Aya: We’re able to get together as family, and then get together as band members when it’s time to rehearse or play a live show. We can switch back and forth really easily and stay focused when we need to.
Rei: We have fun both ways.

How do you feel about the international social media comments about your new album Karma?
Aya: First of all, I’m always happy to hear about people from other countries who are listening to our music.
Rei: I was happy that we got such a strong response to the new songs, and we were able to share new 2020 versions of songs from our early days – “Lost Place” and “Kimarigoto” – so fans could understand our changes and growth as band.
Aya: When I see comments from fans who bought the “band score” version of Karma, I think, “That’s cool.” We see the #PlayKarmaBrats videos on social media and we like checking out how fans play our songs.
Rei: We got lots of compliments for the jacket image – we worked hard on it with our photographer, so I was really happy about that, too.

What is the message in your lyrics that is unique for BRATS?
Rei: We’re singing about the underlying pain, suffering, and negative emotions of human beings.
Aya: We want to share this music with people who have painful feelings with nowhere to go.
Rei: But these feelings can turn into positive energy if you decide to use them. I don’t want us to hide those feelings. I want us to cherish them.

Now that Karma is released, do you feel in a hurry to make new songs?
Rei: Of course, I’m always thinking about new songs.
Aya: I hope we can start playing live again next year in 2021.

How do you feel about performing concerts for worldwide audiences with livestreams?
Rei: Right now, we’re using livestreams because of the COVID-19 situation, so it’s a good opportunity to create an image and atmosphere that is different from ordinary live performances. We’re thinking about the production and camera work to see how we can make it look cool.
Aya: Due to COVID-19, we can’t go overseas or go out at this time of year, so people who can’t usually come to live house can see it online. Please watch it.

What message do you have for your fans in Italy?
Rei: BRATS is still a young band in Japan in the Far East, but thank you for finding our music from a distant country. Italy is a place I haven’t been to yet, but I would love to have a live performance there.
Aya: Thank you for listening to the music of BRATS. We will do our best and we hope the day will come soon when we’ll have a live performance in Italy.
