ANIMAL TRISTE – Una nuova rock band dalla Francia

Ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Mathieu Pigné, batterista e co-fondatore della rock band francese Animal Triste, che ha appena pubblicato l’album di debutto omonimo e che propone sonorità vicine a quelle dei Mogwai e di Mark Lanegan.

Ciao Mathieu, benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, prima di tutto come stai?

Grazie mille Marco, sto abbastanza bene, nonostante tutto quello che stiamo passando. L’uscita di questo disco ci sta tenendo occupati ed è stato un buon rimedio per superare la noia durante il lockdown.

Parliamo di questo bellissimo cd uscito lo scorso 4 dicembre, che riscontri state avendo?

Siamo molto sorpresi dei feedback. Abbiamo fatto questo album prima di tutto per noi stessi, per il piacere di stare insieme e fare la musica che amiamo, senza strategie o altro. Ovviamente non eravamo gli unici a voler ascoltare il rock durante questo periodo frenetico, tanto meglio se risveglia alcune orecchie.

Riascoltando l’album, qual è secondo te la canzone migliore? Mi piacciono tutte ma le mie preferite sono “Wild at heart”, “Sky is something new” e “Vapoline”.

Penso che sia “Sky is something new”, per molte ragioni diverse: è, prima di tutto, una delle prime canzoni che abbiamo scritto, poi sintetizza perfettamente tutte le nostre influenze comuni, è come un umile tributo a Jim Morrison o Nick Cave, un modo per noi di dire loro che sono importanti per noi e che non abbiamo dimenticato quello che ci hanno dato.

Come avviene il processo di scrittura delle vostre canzoni? Iniziate dai testi, da un riff o da un’improvvisazione in sala prove?

Un po’ di tutto questo messo insieme, non ci sono regole prestabilite, a volte suoniamo le canzoni in sala prove, a volte tutto parte da un riff di chitarra inviato al telefono che dà lo slancio. L’unica legge è che non esiste una legge, a parte il divertimento.

Nell’album c’è spazio anche per una cover di Dancing In The Dark di Bruce Springsteen, perché avete scelto quella canzone e quell’artista?

“È logico”. Springsteen, per quello che rappresenta, per la sua integrità, la sua strada senza mai rinnegare sé stesso, è un’icona, una forma di statua di roccia che traccia un percorso che tutti noi dovremmo intraprendere (indipendentemente dal genere musicale). Questo ragazzo non tradisce e si vede, anche nei suoi titoli, non sta cercando di esserlo, lo è. Tuttavia, non è proprio uno dei nostri riferimenti musicali, ma questo titolo, ciò che racconta, ciò che trasmette, ci è sembrato del tutto appropriato per dire chi eravamo attraverso di esso.

Come hai conosciuto gli altri membri della band e quando avete pensato di formare gli Animal Triste?

Siamo tutti amici da molto tempo. Abbiamo chiacchierato allegramente con Fabien (chitarrista) e Yannick (cantante) dopo un concerto, ci siamo detti che volevamo fare insieme la musica che amavamo e che non sentivamo più. Non vogliamo essere aspri o cinici e ancor meno arrenderci, suonare il rock è nel nostro DNA, ci siamo nati, abbiamo iniziato così, sembrava la cosa giusta da fare. Questo gruppo ci ha salvati, da parte mia avevo bisogno di purificarmi un po’, per trovare l’essenza del perché sono un musicista, cosa che avevo perso un po’.

E a chi è venuta l’idea del nome della band?

“Rock” è diventata quasi una parolaccia oggi, sembra vecchia scuola! Non lo è mai stata, è solo una controcultura che oggi è un po’ meno evidenziata. È stato Yannick a tirar fuori “Animal Triste” un giorno durante le prove, stavamo cercando un nome e volevamo tornare al rock, che rappresenta le nostre radici… C’è qualcosa di animale nel rock e, dato che il rock non è molto salutare oggi, “Animale triste” riassume bene il nostro stato d’animo.

Il vostro sound è come un grande ibrido nato dalla fusione di U2, New Order, Nick Cave, Simple Minds, Mogwai, Mark Lanegan e tanti altri, quali sono le band e gli artisti che vi hanno di più ispirato?

Penso che tutti dobbiamo qualcosa alla musica, a coloro che hanno acceso la miccia. Da parte mia i Doors sono stati l’antipasto, senza di loro oggi non sarei un musicista, so che è lo stesso per gli altri membri del gruppo, a cui potrei aggiungere molti altri artisti, da Neil Young a Nick Cave, Joy Division e molti altri. Mark Lanegan e Mogwai sono una sintesi perfetta di tutto ciò che amiamo.

Queste persone ci hanno cambiati, e per sempre. Cercare di trovare la scintilla originale che ci ha fatto vibrare quando eravamo bambini non è guardare indietro.

La musica che offrite è molto internazionale. Pensi che potrete uscire dai confini francesi con questo album?

Non bisogna pensare alla carriera, è la parola più pericolosa che si possa dire in questo lavoro, anche se abbiamo ancora il diritto di sognare di varcare i confini con i nostri strumenti non appena pensiamo alla “carriera” in questi termini in cui fai progetti per te stesso. Oggi ci sono ancora dischi venduti ma c’è meno musica perché si pensa ad una carriera prima ancora di pensare a cosa mettere nella tua arte. Animal Triste ci porterà dove dovrà portarci, non è il veicolo più veloce e non abbiamo preso l’autostrada, ma qualunque sarà la destinazione, alla fine, procederemo come vogliamo, senza vincoli e con moralità.

Avete pubblicato un album ma non si sa quando potrete suonare le canzoni dal vivo. Quanto ti manca essere sul palco? Avete in programma concerti in streaming?

Non appena il mondo sarà pronto, saremo lì, ovunque vorremo essere saremo, e sono sicuro che qualsiasi cosa sarà divertente. Nel 2021 inizieremo a scrivere nuove canzoni (abbiamo già iniziato), non perché dobbiamo farlo ma perché lo vogliamo, è necessario, essenziale, ci fa sentire bene e, si spera, farà bene anche ad altre persone.

Siamo contrari all’idea del concerto in streaming, è, a nostro avviso, poco rispettoso nei confronti del lavoro dei tecnici che ci accompagnano per strada e che oggi sono esclusi, poi, se non ci sarà scelta, ci adegueremo, ma con rimpianto.

Se ti chiedessi un festival o un luogo in cui vorresti suonare in particolare, cosa mi risponderesti?

The Rock Road, un festival in Bretagna (Francia), in cui non abbiamo ancora messo piede. Questo festival ha visto grandi artisti che amiamo, come Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Grazie mille per il vostro tempo, vuoi salutare i lettori dell’intervista e invitarli ad ascoltare il vostro cd?

Proviamoci, resistiamo, cerchiamo di andare avanti, perché per noi ha senso, la causa non è persa. Potremmo non essere noi a rovesciare il castello di carte, ma avremo fatto del nostro meglio, e questo è già molto.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mathieu Pigné, drummer and co-founder of the French rock band Animal Triste, which has just released the debut album “Animal Triste”, and which offers sounds close to those of Mogwai and Mark Lanegan.

Hi Mathieu, welcome to the pages of Tuttorock, first of all how are you?

Thank you very much Marco, it’s going pretty well, despite everything we’re going through. The release of this record occupies us well, and it was a good remedy to overcome boredom during confinement.

Let’s talk about this beautiful cd released last December 4th, what feedback are you having?

We are very surprised by the feedback. We first made this album for ourselves, for the pleasure of being together and making the music we love. Without strategy or whatever. Obviously we weren’t the only ones who wanted to listen to rock during this hectic time. So much the better if it awakens a few ears.

Listening to the album again, what is the best song in your opinion? I like them all but my favorites are “Wild at heart”, “Sky is something new” and “Vapoline”.

I think it’s “Sky is someting new”, for a lot of different reasons: it’s first one of the first songs we wrote, then it perfectly synthesizes all our common influences, it’s like a humble tribute to Jim Morrison or Nick Cave, a way of telling them that they are important to us and that we have not forgotten what they gave us.

How is the process of writing your song? Do you start with lyrics, a riff or an improvisation in the rehearsal room?

A little of all that mixed up, there are no pre-established rules, sometimes we play the songs in rehearsal, sometimes it’s a guitar riff sent to the phone that gives the impetus. The only law is that there is no law – apart from having fun.

In the album there is also space for a very successful cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark, why did you choose that song and that artist?

“It’s logic”. Springsteen – for what he stands for, his integrity, his way forward without ever disowning himself – is an icon. A rock statue form that traces a path that we should all take (regardless of musical genre). This guy doesn’t cheat and it shows, even in his bad titles. He’s not trying to be, he is. However, it is not really one of our musical references, but this title, what it tells, what it conveys, seemed entirely appropriate to us to say who we were through it.

How did you meet the other band members and when did you think about forming Animal Triste?

We are all very long time friends. We chatted happily with Fabien (guitarist) and Yannick (singer) after a concert, we said to ourselves that we wanted to make music together that we loved and that we no longer heard. We don’t want to be bitter or cynical and even less to give up. Playing rock is in our DNA, we were born with it, we started out like this, it felt like the right thing to do. This group kind of saved us, for my part I needed to purify myself a little, to find the essence of why I am a musician. I had lost it a bit.

And who came up with the idea of the band name?

“Rock” has almost become a dirty word today, it sounds old school! And it never has been, it’s just a counter-culture that’s a little less highlighted today. It was Yannick who brought back “Animal Triste” one day in rehearsal. We were looking for a name and since we wanted to go back to rock, which is our roots … There is something animal about rock. As rock is not very healthy today … “Sad animal” sums up our state of mind well.

Your sound is like a great hybrid born from the fusion of U2, New Order, Nick Cave, Simple Minds, Mogwai, Mark Lanegan, and many others, which are the bands and artists that have inspired you the most?

I think you owe something to the music, to those who started the fire. For my part the Doors were a starter, without them I wouldn’t be a musician, I know it’s the same for other members of the group, to that you can add a lot of other artists, from Neil Young through Nick Cave, Joy Division and many more. Mark Lanegan and Mogwai are a perfect synthesis of everything we love.

These people have changed us, and for good. Trying to find the original spark that made us vibrate when we were kids is not being backward looking.

The music you offer is very international. Do you think you can get out of the French borders with this album?

You don’t have to think about career, that’s the most dangerous word I believe in this job, even if we still have the right to dream of crossing borders with our instrument as soon as you think about “career” in these terms you project yourself and you don’t live for the moment. Today there are still records being sold but less music because precisely you are thinking about a career before you even think about what you are going to put in your art. Animal Triste will take us where it should take us, it is not the fastest vehicle and we did not take the highway, but whatever the destination ultimately, we go as we want, without constraints and with morality.

You have released an album but it is not known when you will be able to play the songs live. How much do you miss being on stage? Are you planning any streaming concerts?

As soon as the world is fixed, we’ll be there, wherever we want us to be, and if there’s one thing I’m sure it’s going to be fun. In 2021, we will get down to writing new songs – we have already started – not because we have to do it but because we want to do it, it’s necessary, essential, it makes us feel good, and hopefully it will do other people good.

We are against the idea of the concert in streaming, it is – in our opinion – somewhat respectful of the work of the technicians who accompany us on the road and who today are left out after if there is no choice we will comply, but with regret.

If I ask you about any festival or location where you would like to play particularly what would you tell me?

The Rock Road, a festival in Bretagne (France) in which we have not yet set foot. This festival has seen great artists that we love, like Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club…

We try, we resist, we try to move forward, because it makes sense for us, the cause is not lost. We may not be the ones to overthrow the house of cards, but we will have done our best, and that’s already a lot.
