ANETTE OLZON – Intervista alla cantante svedese

Anette Olzon, l’ex cantante dei Nightwish, torna con un nuovo album, aiutata dal Magnum Karlsson, chitarrista dei Primal Fear e di mille altri progetti. Di seguito la mia intervista alla cantante.

Ciao Anette, come stai? Benvenuta su Tuttorock. Nuovo album, descrivilo, com’è stato il processo compositivo delle canzoni?
Ciao e grazie, va tutto bene e spero anche tu. Il mio album è un album metal con canzoni più veloci e più dure che mai.

Le canzoni sono state scritte durante la pandemia?
Sì, le ho scritte durante la primavera del 2020 quando la pandemia era al suo apice.

I testi sono influenzati da questo periodo difficile che stiamo vivendo?
No, non tutto l’album ma “Strong” che ho scritto sulla pandemia e anche “Sad” è una ninna nanna è una canzone che ho scritto per mio padre che purtroppo è morto a causa del covid in quel momento.

Perché il titolo “Strong”?
Quando ho scritto “Strong” è stata subito la mia traccia preferita e lo è tuttora e la parola STRONG sembra davvero il nome giusto per l’album. Da quando ho pubblicato l’album quest’anno, quando ho compiuto 50 anni, mi sento davvero più forte che mai e ho sentito che tutti abbiamo bisogno di essere forti quando guardiamo il mondo di oggi.

Da dove nasce la tua passione per il canto? So che hai studiato al conservatorio, suoni l’oboe, hai partecipato a vari musical!!
Credo di aver sempre amato cantare, lo faccio da quando avevo solo pochi anni, mi disse mia madre. Ho cantato tutto il tempo e mi è sempre piaciuto cantare. Quando tornavo a casa da scuola cantavo le mie piccole canzoni inventate e poi tornavo a casa e cantavo musical e altri album per imparare. Tutta la mia famiglia suonava strumenti e mia madre è una cantante e faceva parte di gruppi durante la mia infanzia, quindi ce l’ho sempre con me.

Qual è il tuo musical preferito?
Difficile scegliere tra Dufvemåla’s Chess e Kristina, ma entrambi sono realizzati dai miei guru della musica Benny e Björn degli ABBA, che sono la mia band preferita di tutti i tempi e questi musical sono semplicemente i migliori che abbia mai ascoltato.

Nel tuo nuovo album c’è Magnus Karlsson, come è iniziata questa collaborazione?
Ci siamo incontrati mentre cantavo in Allen/Olzon e poi negli Hearthealer e ho constatato quanto fosse bravo sia come autore che come chitarrista, quindi ho subito detto alla mia etichetta che volevo scrivere con lui. Sapevo che sarebbe stato perfetto per aiutarmi a far suonare la musica come volevo e ci siamo divertiti a fare questo album ed entrambi vogliamo già iniziare con il prossimo.

“Parasite” è dedicato a qualcuno in particolare?
Potrebbe essere, ma solo io so chi è veramente e mi piacerebbe continuare così.

Cosa è cambiato di Anette Olzon dall’inizio ad oggi?
Ovviamente il tempo mi ha fatto cambiare e imparare nel corso degli anni e sono grata sia per i giorni difficili che per tutti i giorni belli. Ma sono sempre la stessa persona, sono sempre stata solo un po’ più vecchia fuori e molto più saggia dentro.

Hai programmato un tour?
No, niente in programma adesso.

Le tue influenze musicali? Cantanti e band.
Beh, gli ABBA ovviamente, Whitney Houston, Sting di quando era più giovane e oggi le band metal che amo e influenzano sono i Five Finger Death Punch, i Dimmu Borgir, gli In Flames e i Katatonia.

Cosa fa Anette Olzon quando non si dedica alla musica? Hai altre passioni?
Amo stare a casa con la mia famiglia e godermi la mia casa poiché viaggio molto da molti anni, quindi mi piace molto sedermi sul divano e guardare le serie tv con le candele accese. Altrimenti amo imparare cose nuove, leggere buoni libri e allenarmi e preferibilmente amo correre e sollevare pesi pesanti.

Hi Anette, how are you? Welcome to Tuttorock. New album, describe it, how was the compositional process of the songs?
Hi and thanks, I am all good and hope you are too. My album is a metal album with faster and harder songs than I’ve done before.

Were the songs written during the pandemic?
Yes I wrote it during the spring of 2020 when the pandemic was at its peak.

Are the lyrics influenced by this difficult period we are experiencing?
No, not the whole album but Strong I wrote about the pandemic and also Sad lullaby is a song I wrote to my father who sadly passed away from covid at that time.

 Why the title “Strong”?
When I wrote Strong it was instantly my favourite track and still is and the word STRONG really feel as the right name of the album. Both since I released the album this year when I turned 50 years old and truly feel stronger than ever and I felt we all need to be strong when I look at the world today.

Where does your passion for singing come from? I know that you studied in the conservatory, you play the oboe, you have participated in various musicals!!
I believe Ive always loved to sing, I did it from when I was only a few years old my mother has told me. I sang all the time and I’ve always loved to sing. When I walked home from school I sang my own little made up songs and then I came home and sang to musicals and other albums to learn. My family all played instruments and my mum is a singer and was in bands during my childhood so Ive had it with me always.

What is your favorite musical? Because?
Hard to choose between Chess and Kristina from Dufvemåla but both are made by my music gurus Benny and Björn from ABBA which is my all time favourite band and these musicals are just the best I’ve ever heard.

In your new album there is Magnus Karlsson, how did this collaboration start?
We met while I sang on Allen/Olzon and then Hearthealer and I could hear how good he is both as a songwriter and as a guitarist so I immediately told my label I wanted to write with him.  I knew he would be perfect to assist me to get the music to sound as I wanted and we just had the best time making this album and we both already long to start with the next one.

Is “Parasite” dedicated to someone in particular?
It might be but its only me who know who its really about and Id like to keep it that way

What has changed of the Anette Olzon of the beginning and that of today?
Of course time has made me change and learn over the years and Im grateful for both the harder days as well as all the good days. But I am still the same person I have always been just a bit older on the outside and quite much wiser on the inside.

Have you planned a tour?
No, nothing planned at this time.

Your musical influences? Singers and bands.
Well ABBA of course, Whitney Houston, Sting from when I was younger and nowadays bands in metal that I love and influence from are Five finger death punch, Dimmu Borgir, In flames and Katatonia.

What does Anette Olzon do when she is not dedicated to music? Do you have other passions?
I love being at home with my family and just enjoy my home since I did travel a lot for many years so I am quite fond of just sitting in my couch watching tv-series with lit candles. Otherwise I love to learn new things, read good books and workout and preferably I love to run or lift heavy weights.
