ANDREW McMAHON IN THE WILDERNESS – Intervista su Tilt At The Wind No More

‘Tilt At The Wind No More’ è il quarto disco di Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. Dopo aver fondato nel 1998 la pop-punk band Something Corporate, McMahon ha portato avanti il suo progetto solista coronato di successi e di airplays radiofonici. Con quasi 2.5 milioni di album venduti in tutto il mondo e tour ovunque sold-out.

Buongiorno Andrew, piacere di averti sulle pagine di Tuttorock, vuoi raccontarci come ti sei avvicinato alla musica?
Ho scoperto la musica quando ero molto giovane. I miei fratelli e sorelle erano più grandi di me e i miei genitori avevano un gusto musicale eccellente, facendomi ascoltare molte cose all’inizio. Abbiamo sempre avuto un pianoforte in casa e verso i nove anni mi sono ritrovato a scrivere canzoni e da quel momento non mi sono mai guardato indietro. 

Quali sono stati i tuoi primi ascolti musicali?
Ero davvero preso da Billy Joel, REM, U2 e Tom Petty. Anche un sacco di rock classico: i Doors, Hendrix, i Grateful Dead. 

Come hai scelto il tuo aka? Che significato hai voluto dare a In The Wilderness?
Per me la natura selvaggia rappresenta una scelta consapevole su come approcciare la mia creatività e la mia professione. L’idea è quella di essere sempre in crescita e abbracciare il cambiamento. 

Il tuo impegno contro la leucemia è encomiabile, cosa ti ha spinto in questa direzione?
Ero semplicemente incredibilmente motivato a vivere e a tornare alla mia musica, ai miei amici e alla mia famiglia. 

Cosa è cambiato dai tempi dei Something Corporate?
Praticamente tutto. Ero un ragazzino quando stavo nei Something Corporate. Stavo imparando a suonare, scrivere e registrare e stavo anche imparando a relazionarmi. È stato un periodo bellissimo, ma ci sono così tante cose che vorrei sapere allora che so adesso. Ho imparato molto su come gestire molto meglio le mie emozioni e su come comunicare meglio con le persone che amo e con le persone con cui lavoro. 

Come è nato questo nuovo disco, Tilt At The Wind No More?
Una manciata di canzoni è stata scritta nel 2019, ma la maggior parte del disco è nata quando la pandemia stava finalmente rallentando un po’. Avevo lavorato con i miei produttori, Tommy English e Jeremy Hatcher nei primi momenti della mia carriera e abbiamo deciso di rintanarci per alcuni mesi nel 2022 e fare questo disco insieme. Sono così talentuosi e l’intero processo è stato avventuroso e informale nel migliore dei modi. 

Cosa troveremo di nuovo in questo album? Tu suoni il piano?
Suono il pianoforte e un sacco di sintetizzatori analogici. Penso che la produzione sia davvero bella e le canzoni mi stanno molto a cuore. Gran parte di questo disco mi porta a confrontarmi con il fatto che sto invecchiando, ma la scrittura mi è nata in maniera davvero soddisfacente. Mi ha aiutato a fare pace con questa fase di transizione nella mia vita e sono davvero orgoglioso del lavoro sia a livello personale che professionale. 

Come ti sei trovato a lavorare con Tommy English e Jeremy Matcher?
Li amo entrambi. Sono davvero come fratelli per me e sono così grato per la loro dedizione a questo album.

 Progetti futuri? Un tour?
In questo momento la mia priorità è far ascoltare questo album. Sarò in viaggio per la maggior parte dell’anno, ma sicuramente inizierò a scrivere quando sarò a casa per le pause.

Good morning, Andrew, nice to have you on the pages of Tuttorock, can you tell us how you approached music?
I found music when I was really young. My older brothers and sisters and my parents had excellent taste in music and exposed me to a lot early on. We always had a piano in the house and around the age of nine I found myself writing songs and never looked back. 

What were your first musical listenings?
I was really into Billy Joel, REM, U2 and Tom Petty. A lot of classic rock too- the doors, Hendrix, the Grateful Dead. 

How did you choose your aka? What meaning did you want to give to In The Wilderness?
For me the wilderness represents a conscious choice on how to approach my creativity and my profession. The idea is to always be growing and embracing change. 

Your commitment against leukemia is commendable, what pushed you in this direction?
I was just incredibly motivated to live and to get back to my music, my friends and family. 

What has changed since Something Corporate?
Pretty much everything. I was a kid when I was in Something Corporate. I was learning how to play, to write and record and I was also learning how to be in relationships. It was a beautiful time but there are so many things I wish I knew then that I know now. I’ve learned a lot about how to manage my emotions much better and how to communicate better with the people I love and the people I work with. 

How was born this new album, Tilt At The Wind No More?
A handful of the songs were written in 2019 but most of the record came together when the pandemic was finally slowing down a bit. I had worked with my producers, Tommy English and Jeremy Hatcher at earlier moments in my career and we decided to hole up for a few months in 2022 and make this record together. They’re so talented and the whole process was adventurous and informal in the best ways. 

What will we find new in this album? Do you play the piano?
I play the piano as well as a bunch of analog synths. I think the production is really beautiful and the songs are very near to my heart. A lot of this record is me confronting the fact that I’m getting older, but the writing really steered me into a good place. It helped me make peace with this transition in my life and Im really proud of the work both personally and professionally. 

How did you find working with Tommy English and Jeremy Matcher?
I love them both. They really are like brothers to me and I am so grateful for their dedication to this album. 

Future projects? A tour?
Right now my priority is getting this album heard. I’ll be out on the road most of the year but I’ll definitely start writing when I’m home for breaks.
