ALMANAC – Intervista al chitarrista Victor Smolski

In occasione dell’uscita del terzo album in studio di Almanac, “Rush of Death”, in programma il 6 marzo, ho avuto il piacere di fare due chiacchiere con il grande chitarrista Victor Smolski.

Ciao Victor, benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come va in generale?

Ciao Marco, grazie mille, va tutto bene!

Voglio congratularmi con te per il nuovo album degli Almanac “Rush Of Death”, l’ho ascoltato più volte e l’ho trovato fantastico. L’album inizia con la frase “Drivers, start your engine” che si dice all’inizio delle gare automobilistiche negli Stati Uniti, volevi rendere omaggio alla tua altra grande passione, ovvero le macchine da corsa?

Sì, il concept dell’album riguarda la storia perché l’amiamo molto. Siamo partiti da cose storiche come i gladiatori, tutti pensano che essi fossero solamente degli schiavi ma in realtà erano eroi. Volevano andare avanti, correndo rischi, combattendo, andando avanti fino alla morte, è un modo diverso di vedere i gladiatori, erano attori e combattenti e non solo schiavi. Abbiamo fatto un salto fino ai tempi moderni, i gladiatori moderni per me sono i piloti automobilistici. Il pubblico è sempre in attesa di un incidente, i piloti combattono duramente, da più di 25 anni io sono un pilota professionista, ho vissuto  molte situazioni folli, ho conosciuto molti piloti, ho parlato con Zanardi, con Niki Lauda, ​​questo è il motivo perché ho inserito una frase di Niki nel booklet dell’album. Ci sono state molte situazioni pazze nell’automobilismo, ad esempio quando Stefan Bellof è rimasto ucciso in un incidente con Jackie Ickx, volevano arrivare alla curva Eau Rouge nel circuito belga di Spa insieme, ma non c’è posto per due macchine lì e Bellof è morto. Tutti i suoni che senti nella canzone Predator provengono dalle mie gare automobilistiche. Ho guidato in molte serie diverse, dalla Formula Ford ai Rally fino alle auto da turismo nella 24 ore del Nürburgring. L’anno scorso sono arrivato secondo nel campionato tedesco di Rally Cross, è stato davvero divertente!

Com’è stato il processo di songwriting per le canzoni? Ti dico che la mia canzone preferita di questo nuovo album è “Satisfied”.

Ok! Ero di ottimo umore. Prima di iniziare a comporre, mi chiedevo cosa io volessi in questo album, domandandomi del suono, delle mie idee sui riff, dell’orchestrazione. Lavoro da 15 anni con Nuclear Blast, la nostra partnership è iniziata da una compilation in cui ero il produttore di Hansi dei Blind Guardian, è davvero divertente comporre canzoni per gli Almanac perché c’è più di un cantante e mescolo le loro voci tentando di creare un suono tipico. Penso che quando lo ascolti tu possa sentire tutto il mio stile.

Nel 2015, avresti pensato di registrare tre album in meno di 5 anni?

No, mi godo la vita e faccio quello che sento in quel momento, prendo la vita molto facilmente e l’ho cambiata molto negli ultimi 5 anni, da quando mio figlio è nato e da quel momento ho avuto più relax, la formazione della band è cambiata perché alcuni ragazzi non avevano tempo per essa, ho trovato musicisti migliori e la band è cresciuta. Mi diverto e mi piace suonare con grandi musicisti, voglio avere membri della band da cui posso imparare qualcosa, non solo musicisti che si limitano a suonare la mia musica, voglio gente che sperimenti cose nuove e che ama viaggiare insieme. È davvero una band divertente.

Vieni da una lunga esperienza con in Rage, circa 15 anni, poi ad un certo punto hai lasciato la band dicendo che non ti divertivi più e hai fondato gli Almanac, ti stai di nuovo divertendo con la musica?

Esatto, questo è stato il motivo per cui mi sono fermato con i Rage. Non facevamo più sessioni jam insieme. Suonavamo ogni canzone, facevamo solo musica per soldi, io voglio divertirmi con la musica, non la vedo come un affare. Con i Rage è stato un grande momento, ma abbiamo perso tutto, abbiamo perso la voglia di divertirci, era come un fottuto affare, noioso, ogni nuovo CD era un nuovo prodotto. Non volevo questo, l’ultimo tour con i Rage è stato davvero brutto. Mi piace davvero fare cose diverse con gli Almanac e adoro questo.

Tuo padre è stato un grande compositore di musica sinfonica, quanto ha influenzato il tuo modo di scrivere nuovi riff e assoli?

Era un musicista davvero fantastico, uno dei migliori che io abbia incontrato nella mia vita, aveva una mente molto aperta, è molto difficile trovare musicisti classici non conservatori. Aveva idee interessanti, ha cercato di aiutarmi in qualche arrangiamento, abbiamo sempre parlato insieme della mia musica. Quando ero giovane ho iniziato a suonare e mi ha indirizzato sulla strada giusta, mostrandomi alcune registrazioni in studio, presentandomi ad alcuni musicisti e da lì iniziai con una band quando avevo 14 anni, ho sospeso per un anno la scuola perché dovevo andare in tour e lui mi ha supportato. Ho suonato duramente ogni giorno a casa, è stato un grande momento.

Hai visto la musica classica e quella metal molto da vicino, quante cose in comune hanno questi due mondi per te?

Ho studiato musica classica e suono tutta la musica, per me non sono mondi così diversi, la grande differenza riguarda gli strumenti. La musica classica può suonare cose rock, il rock può suonare cose classiche. Non sono un grande fan di campionatori e tastiere, mi piace quando le persone suonano strumenti reali, mi piace registrare con una vera orchestra ma, quando vai a suonare in qualche club, non è così facile avere posto per un’orchestra completa.

Vieni dalla Bielorussia ma ti sei trasferito in Germania, rifaresti questa scelta?

Mi piace la Bielorussia, è un paese fantastico ma mi piace il mondo. Vivo in Germania perché qui posso viaggiare ovunque, vivo in una piccola città vicino a Dortmund, mi piacciono la libertà e la foresta, ho molte macchine rumorose e non voglio creare problemi ad altre persone, la Germania è un posto molto interessante.

Quali sono le differenze che trovi tra suonare la chitarra e guidare un auto da corsa?

Sono sensazioni molto simili. Quando metto le mani sulla chitarra sento la stessa adrenalina di quando guido una macchina, ci sono molte situazioni simili, ad esempio nella musica hai la band sul palco e per le gare hai una squadra che prepara la tua auto. Quando premo il pulsante di avvio del motore però. non penso alla musica, è troppo pericoloso.

Ti piacerebbe far parte del G3 di Joe Satriani?

Oh sì, sarebbe bello, facciamo molte cose simili, mi piace molto quel modo di suonare. Non intendo cose come battaglie con la chitarra, voglio solo dire che potrebbe essere davvero divertente incontrare ragazzi con nuove idee.

Farete un tour per promuovere l’album? Verrete anche in Italia?

Spero di suonare di nuovo in Italia, ma ad oggi non abbiamo ancora fissato delle date lì. Andremo in tour con Lordi a marzo, suonando ogni giorno in Europa. Il pubblico italiano è molto potente e spero di poter suonare di nuovo presto da voi!

On occasion of the release of Almanac’s third studio album, “Rush of Death”, scheduled for March 6th, I had the pleasure of having a chat with the great guitarist Victor Smolski.

Hi Victor, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how’s it going in general?

Hi Marco, thank you so much, everything is fine!

I want to congratulate you on the new Almanac album “Rush Of Death”, I listened to it several times and I found it amazing. The album begins with the phrase “Drivers, start your engine” which is said at the beginning of the car races in the USA, did you want to make a tribute to your other great passion, that is racing cars?

Yeah, the concept of the album is about history because we love history very much. We started from historical stuff like gladiator, everybody thinks gladiators were only slaves but they were heroes. They wanted keep going, going for risk, fighting, keep going till they die, it is a different way to see gladiator, they were actors and fighters and not only slaves. It is a jump to modern times, the modern gladiators for me are the race drivers. Audience always waiting for somebody crash, race drivers fighting really hard, for more than 25 years I am a professional driver, I had a lot of crazy situations, I knew a lot of drivers, I spoke with Zanardi, Niki Lauda, this is the reason why I put a sentence of Niki Lauda in the booklet. There were crazy situations in car racers, for example when Stefan Bellof was killed in an incident with Jackie Ickx, they wanted to go in the corner Eau Rouge in Spa together but there is no place for two cars there and Bellof died. All sounds you hear in the song Predator are from my car races. I drove in many different series, from Formula Ford to Rallies and touring cars in 24 hours of Nürburgring. Last year I won the second place in German Rally cross Championship, it was really fun!

How was the songwriting process for the songs? I tell you that my favorite song of this new album is “Satisfied”.

Ok! I was very good mood. Before I started to compose, I asked me about what I wanted to this album, asking to myself about my sound, my ideas about riffs, orchestrating. I’m walking together for 15 years with Nuclear Blast, our relationship started from a compilation where I was the producer for Hansi of Blind Guardian, it is really fun to compose songs for Almanac because there is more than one singer and I mix the singers trying to creat a typic sound. I think that when you listen to it you can hear all my style.

In 2015, did you think you could record three albums in less than 5 years?

No, I just enjoy the life and do what I feel in that moment, I take life very easy and I changed my life a lot in last 5 years, when my son was born and from that time I have more relax, line up changed because some guys had not time for the band, I found better musicians and the band grew up. I just enjoy and I like to play with great musicians, I want to have musicians from I can learn something, not only musicians that play my music and put more experiment in our music and love to travel together. It is really a fun band.

You come from a long experience in Rage, about 15 years, then at a certain point you left the band saying that you no longer had fun and you founded Almanac, are you having fun with music again?

Exactly, this was the point why I stopped with Rage. We had not more jamming together. Only playing every song again and again, only music for money, I want fun with music, I don’t see it like a business. With Rage was a great time but we lost all, I think we lost fun together, it was like fucking business, boring, every new CD was a new product. I didn’t want this. Last tour with Rage was really bad. I really like to do different stuff with Almanac and I love this.

Your father was a great symphonic music composer, how much did it influence your way of writing new riffs and solos?

He was really a fantastic musician, one of the best I met in my life, he was very open mind, it is very difficult to find classical musicians not conservative. He had interesting ideas, he tried to help me in some arrangement, we always spoke together about my music. When I was young I started to play and he showed me the right way, he showed me some studio recording, introducing me to some musicians and I started with a band when I was 14, I broke for one year the school because I was on tour and he supported me. I played hard every day at home. It has been a great time.

You  have seen both classical and metal music up very close, how many things in common do these two worlds have for you?

I studied classical music and I play all of music, for me they are not so different, the big difference is about the instruments. Classical music can play rock stuff, rock can play classical stuff. I’m not a big fan of samples and keyboards, I like when people play real instruments, I like to record with a real orchestra but when you go to play in some club it is not so easy to have place for an orchestra.

You come from Belarus but you moved to Germany, would you make this choice again?

I like Belarus, it is a fantastic country but I like the worldwide. I live in Germany because here I can travel to everywhere, I live in a small city near Dortmund, I like freedom and forest, I have a lot of very loud cars and I don’t want to make trouble to other people, Germany is a cool place.

What are the difference you feel between playing music and driving some racing car?

It’s very similar feeling. When I put my hands on my guitar I feel the same adrenaline when I drive a car, there are a lot of similar situation, for example on music you have the band on stage and about the races you have a team that prepare your car. But when I push the start engine button I don’t think about music, it’s too dangerous.

Would you like to be part of Joe Satriani’s G3?

Oh yeah, it could be nice, we do many similar things, I like very much that way. I don’t mean guitar fight, it could be really fun to meet guys with new ideas.

Will you do a tour to promote the album? Will you also come to Italy?

Not yet, I hope to play in Italy again but at the moment we haven’t shows there. We will go on tour with Lordi in March, playing about every day in Europe. Italian audience is very powerful and I hope to play there again soon!
