ALDIOUS – Intervista alla chitarrista Yoshi

Cinque ragazze giapponesi, cinque heavy metal girls, le Aldious celebrano 10 anni di attività e lo fanno con una nuova cantante, R! N e con la rivisitazione di alcuni loro brani in “Evoke 2010-2020” uscito pochi mesi fa e da me recensito (qui la recensione) e con “Evoke II 2010-2020” che uscirà a fine gennaio 2021 (verrà recensito a breve). Ne abbiamo parlato con Yoshi, la chitarrista e fondatrice della band per poterle conoscere meglio e vi garantisco che ne vale la pena, di seguito l’intervista.

Ciao Yoshi, benvenuta su Tuttorock.com. Presentati ai nostri lettori, come sono nate le Aldious?
Ciao Italia! Sono Yoshi, la chitarrista delle Aldious. Ho fondato la band ad Osaka nel 2008 dopo aver suonato in diverse cover band metal. Volevo creare una band e indossare abiti sul palco diversi dai miei soliti vestiti.

Avete 10 anni di storia ormai, sei soddisfatta del successo della band?
Sono stati i dieci anni più importanti della mia vita! Mi ha permesso di crescere notevolmente, non solo nella musica ma anche come persona.

Come nasce una canzone delle Aldious, prima la musica e poi i testi o viceversa? Il significato dei testi?
Abbiamo una nuova cantante che si chiama R! N. Da quando si è unita scrive testi e poi creiamo musica attorno a questo. Una volta che abbiamo un’idea della sensazione della canzone, è molto più facile comporre una melodia attorno ad essa. Al momento siamo tutte a distanza sociale, quindi scrive nel suo studio di casa che ha creato e ci invia idee su cui lavorare e su cui dare feedback.

Suonate heavy/power/thrash/metal, sono queste le tue influenze musicali?
Sono stata nel mondo del metal per molto tempo. Prima delle Aldious ho suonato in diverse cover band metal. Sceglievamo canzoni pop famose e le trasformavamo in versioni heavy metal.

Perché hai scelto R! N come nuova cantante?
Si è unita a noi come cantante di supporto per uno dei nostri tour. Per quel tour avevamo due vocalist che si alternavano per cantare le canzoni. Dopo sei mesi in viaggio, abbiamo chiesto a R! N di unirsi a noi come membro ufficiale e per fortuna ha detto di sì! Era la prima volta che cantava metal. È anche attiva nella musica da dieci anni e ha cantato molte canzoni utilizzate nelle ‘anime’, incluse le sigle di Attack On Titan, Gundam e altre.

Avete avuto un buon successo in Giappone, avete esperienze anche in Europa?
In Giappone siamo conosciute come una delle band che rappresentano il metal femminile. Faremo il nostro primo tour europeo nell’ottobre 2021! Sono davvero entusiasta (mi dispiace che l’Italia non sia inclusa questa volta). Siamo impegnate in Giappone, quindi non ero davvero sicura che qualcuno sapesse chi eravamo all’estero, ma ho sentito che le vendite dei biglietti sono andate molto bene e quando lo abbiamo annunciato ho ricevuto molti commenti da fan stranieri. Sono rimasta sorpresa che le persone in Europa ci aspettassero così impazientemente.

Quest’anno è uscito “Evoke” e l’anno prossimo “Evoke II”, perché avete scelto di reinterpretare le vostre canzoni e come le avete scelte?
Quando R! N si è unita a noi ci siamo rese conto che i nuovi fan avrebbero potuto ascoltare il nostro catalogo precedente prima di venire a uno dei nostri spettacoli e le canzoni sarebbero suonate leggermente diverse da quelle che hanno sentito a causa di R! N che ora gestisce la voce. In realtà speravamo di registrare un album completamente nuovo quest’anno, ma abbiamo deciso di non farlo a causa di problemi di sicurezza legati al coronavirus. Se abbiamo registrato un album, il personale coinvolto è molto, ci sono tutti i membri della band, più lo staff tecnico che lavora anche con molte altre band, quindi c’è un alto rischio che molte persone possano essere infettate. Quindi con “Evoke II 2010-2020”, siamo riuscite a limitarlo a tre persone: R! N, io che guido R! N in studio e l’ingegnere del suono.

Stai però già preparando a un nuovo album?
Sì. R! N ha lavorato dal suo studio casalingo a una raccolta di nuovo materiale che ha condiviso con noi su cui lavorare. Questo tempo in più che abbiamo per non essere in tour ci ha consentito di scrivere nuove canzoni.

Come state vivendo l’emergenza covid in Giappone?
Abbiamo già rinviato due volte il nostro tour europeo e abbiamo anche ridotto la quantità di spettacoli che possiamo fare in Giappone. Alla fine, invece, abbiamo eseguito una performance in streaming online in modo che tutti possano guardare. È stato fantastico esibirsi in uno spettacolo completo, ma un po ‘strano non avere la reazione immediata della folla.

Stiamo lavorando a nuovo materiale!

Si spera che dopo questo prossimo tour europeo i nostri fan cresceranno oltreoceano e forse la prossima volta potremo venire e suonare in Italia. Hi girls and welcome to Tuttorock.com. Introduce yourself to our readers, how are Aldious born?
Hello Italy! I am Yoshi, the guitarist of Aldious. I founded the band in Osaka in 2008 after playing in several metal cover bands. I wanted to create a band and wear clothes on stage that were different to my usual clothes.

You have 10 years of history now, are you satisfied with your success?
It’s been the most important ten years of my life! It’s allowed me to grow considerably, not only in music but also as a person.

How is an Aldious song born, first the music and then the lyrics or the other way around? The meaning of your lyrics?

We have a new singer called R!N. Since she joined she writes lyrics and then we create music around that. Once we have an idea of the feel of the song, it’s much easier to compose a melody around it. At the moment we’re all social distancing, so she’s writing at her home studio that she made and sending ideas for us to work on and give feedback on.

You play heavy / power / thrash / metal, what are your musical influences?
I’ve been into metal for a long time. Before Aldious I played in several metal cover bands. We used to pick famous pop songs and turn them into heavy metal versions.

Why did you choose R!N as a new singer?
She joined us as a support vocalist for one of our tours. For that tour we had two vocalists, and they would take turns to sing the songs. After six months on the road, we asked if R!N would like to join us as an official member and thankfully she said yes! It was the first time for her to sing metal. She’s also been active in music for ten years, and she sang many songs that were used in anime, including theme songs from Attack on Titan, Gundam and more.

Do you have good success in Japan, have you also had experiences in Europe?
In Japan we’re known as one of the bands representing female metal. We will have our first European tour in October 2021! I’m really excited about it (sorry that Italy is not included this time). We’re busy in Japan so I wasn’t really sure if anyone knew who we were overseas, but I hear that ticket sales are very good, and when we announced it I received many comments from overseas fans. I was surprised people in Europe are waiting for us so eagerly.

This year “Evoke” was released and next year “Evoke II”, why did you choose to reinterpret your songs and how did you choose them?
When R!N joined we realised that new fans might listen to our back catalogue before coming to one of our shows, and the songs would sound slightly different to what they heard because of R!N now handling the vocals. We were actually hoping to record a completely new album this year but we decided against it due to safety concerns around corona virus. If we recorded an album there are many staff involved: there’s all the band members, plus the engineer staff who are all working with many other bands too, so there’s a high risk of many people who could be infected. So with Evoke II 2010-2020, we managed to limit it to three people: R!N, me driving R!N to the studio, and the engineer.

Are you already preparing a new album?
Yes. R!N has been working from her home studio working on a collection of new material that she’s been sharing with us to work on. This extra time we have from not being on tour has meant we can write new songs.

How are you experiencing the covid emergency in Japan?
It’s already postponed our European tour twice, and also reduced the amount of shows we can do in Japan. In the end we did an online stream performance instead so everyone can watch. It was great to perform a full stage show but a little strange to not have the immediate reaction of the crowd.

Future projects?
We’re working on new material!
