AISHA BADRU – Intervista alla cantante Newyorkese sul nuovo EP Transcendence
In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo EP “Transcendence”, prevista per il 7 febbraio, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare la cantante newyorkese Aisha Badru.
Ciao Aisha, benvenuta sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come va in generale?
Va alla grande! Di recente sono diventata mamma per la prima volta di due gemelli, quindi la mia vita è un po’ frenetica, ma sono felice più che mai.
Ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare “Transcendence”, il tuo nuovo EP, l’ho trovato molto bello e molto rilassante, hai abbandonato l’elettronica per l’acustica, come mai questa scelta?
Volevo che assomigliasse al mio lavoro precedente, in cui le canzoni erano più incentrate sui testi che sulla produzione. Credo che registrare musica in questo modo aiuti a creare intimità con l’ascoltatore e consenta al messaggio di essere al centro della scena. Volevo davvero che il messaggio di guarigione, che è il nucleo dell’EP, raggiungesse il mio pubblico.
È questa la tua nuova scelta musicale o tornerai a utilizzare l’elettronica?
Hmm… forse andrò ancora oltre nello sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo per il mio prossimo disco in futuro. Il semplice suono acustico è il mio preferito, però.
C’è una canzone in questo EP, la mia preferita, “Soil’s Daughter”, che sembra essere un inno al nostro pianeta, un pianeta malato, pensi che possa ancora essere salvato?
Penso che la domanda più grande sia: gli umani possono essere salvati? La terra ha l’intelligenza e i meccanismi per rigenerarsi. È solo una questione di capire se saremo parte della guarigione o parte di ciò che deve essere purificato. Ho ancora speranza per noi, ma richiederà uno sforzo che andrà diviso tra individui, società e governi per apportare cambiamenti in linea con la natura e l’equilibrio. Ogni giorno sto imparando modi con cui io possa avere un impatto positivo.
Ti dico un nome, Chris Hutchison, cosa significa per te?
Chris Hutchison è il produttore musicale dei miei dischi “Pendulum”, “Road to Self” e ora ” Transcendence”. Ci siamo incontrati online e abbiamo lavorato insieme a distanza, con me negli Stati Uniti e lui nel Regno Unito… anche se, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di incontrarci di persona una volta mentre ero in tournée in Europa. È un ragazzo eccezionale e mi sento davvero come se mi avesse aiutato a sviluppare il mio suono.
Per coloro che non ti conoscono, vorresti parlarmi un po’ del tuo background musicale e chi sono stati gli artisti che ti hanno ispirato di più?
Sono cresciuta ascoltando un’ampia varietà di musica, quindi non riesco ad individuare chi mi abbia ispirato di più. Sono stata sicuramente ispirata in gran parte da musicisti folk. Dopo il liceo ho comprato una chitarra, ho guardato i tutorial di YouTube e ho imparato a suonare alcuni accordi di base. Questo è tutto ciò di cui avevo veramente bisogno per iniziare a scrivere le mie prime canzoni.
So che ti sei trasferita da New York a Orlando, in Florida, quali differenze hai riscontrato tra le due città?
La differenza più grande è il meteo! Ad Orlando fa caldo per gran parte dell’anno, cosa adoro assolutamente. New York diventa molto fredda in inverno. Orlando è anche molto vicina a tanti bellissimi parchi e sorgenti.
Tutte le persone, in particolare tutti gli artisti, hanno un grande sogno, qual è il tuo?
Vivere in modo sostenibile e in linea con la natura ed essere in grado di poter plasmare questo stile di vita nel mondo.
So che ami viaggiare, c’è un posto che ti è piaciuto più di altri e c’è un posto che non hai ancora visto e che vorresti visitare?
Bali è il posto che mi ha rubato il cuore! È così pacifico e bello e c’è qualcosa di molto sacro e magnetico nella gente e nella terra. Vorrei tornare a visitare l’Africa e visitare altri paesi, ci sono molti posti che non ho visto lì.
Stai programmando un tour per promuovere questo nuovo EP? Verrai anche in Europa?
Non ho in programma un tour ma ho appena fissato una data, si tratta di un festival in Spagna vicino a Barcellona, dove mi esibirò a luglio :)!
Hai in programma un LP?
Vorrei puntare a pubblicare un LP l’anno prossimo. Devo riflettere profondamente su ciò che avrò da dire.

On the occasion of the release of the new EP “Transcendence”, scheduled for February 7th, I had the pleasure of interviewing the New York singer Aisha Badru.
Hi Aisha, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how’s it going in general?
I’m great! I recently became a first time mom to twins, so things are a little hectic, but I’m happier than ever.
I had the pleasure of listening to “Transcendence”, your new EP, I found it very beautiful and very relaxing, you abandoned electronics for acoustics, why did you choose this?
I wanted it to resemble my earlier work, where the songs were more about the lyrics than it was about the production. I believe recording music in this way helps to create intimacy with the listener and allows the lyrical message to take center stage. I really wanted the healing message that is the core of the EP to reach my audience.
Is this your new musical choice or will you go back to using electronics?
Hmm.. maybe I will go even further to experiment with something new for my next record in the future. The simple acoustic sound is my favorite, though.
There is a song in this EP, my favorite one, “Soil’s Daughter”, which seems to be a hymn to our planet, a sick planet, do you think it can still be saved?
I think the bigger question is: can humans be saved? The earth has the intelligence and mechanisms to regenerate itself back to health. It’s just a matter of whether we will be part of the healing or part of what needs to be cleansed. I still have hope for us, but it will require a concerted effort between individuals, corporations, and governments to make changes that are aligned with nature and balance. Everyday I am learning about the ways in which I can have a positive impact.
I tell you a name, Chris Hutchison, what does it mean for you?
Chris Hutchison is the music producer on my records ‘Pendulum’, ‘Road To Self’, and now ‘Transcendence’. We met online and have been working together from a distance, with me in the states and him in the UK… although, we did get the chance to meet in person once while I was on tour in Europe. He’s a great guy and I really feel as though he helped me to develop my sound.
For those who don’t know you, would you like to tell me a little bit about your musical background and who were the artists who inspired you the most?
I grew up listening to a variety of music, so I can’t pinpoint who inspired me the most. I was definitely inspired largely by folk musicians. After high school I bought a guitar, watched YouTube tutorials, and learned how to play some basic chords. That’s all I really needed to begin writing my earliest songs.
I know you moved from New York to Orlando in Florida, what differences did you find between the two cities?
The biggest difference is the weather! Orlando is hot most of the year, which I absolutely love. New York gets so cold in the winter. Orlando is also very close to many beautiful state parks and springs.
All people, and especially all artists have a big dream, which one is yours?
To live in a way that is sustainable and in alignment with nature and to be able to model this lifestyle to the world.
I know you love to travel, is there a place that you liked more than others and there is a place that you have not yet seen and that you would like to visit?
Bali is the place that stole my heart! It’s so peaceful and beautiful and there is something very sacred and magnetic about the people and the land. I would like to go back to visit Africa and visit more countries, there are many places I haven’t seen there.
Are you planning a tour to promote this new EP? Will you also come to Europe?
I don’t have any plans for a tour, but I just locked in a festival in Spain near Barcelona where I will perform in July :)!
Are you planning a LP soon?
I would like to aim to release an LP next year. I have to reflect deeply on what I want to say next.
