5K HD – Intervista alla band austriaca
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti sulle pagine di Tuttorock, prima di tutto congratulazioni per il vostro nuovo lavoro, High Performer, che uscirà a settembre, lo sto recensendo, lo sto ascoltando per la quinta volta e lo sto trovando davvero bellissimo. Come è nato questo LP?
Ciao! Molto lusingati 🙂 A dire il vero, non è stato un parto facile, come si suol dire. Inizialmente ci siamo concessi mesi di studio insieme. Questo è continuato durante e dopo la fine del tour. Eravamo un pò svuotati, ma cercavamo ancora di comporre in modo collaborativo e simultaneo. Infine ci siamo presi la briga di lavorare separatamente e in qualche modo di scambiarci suoni e bozze delle canzoni l’uno con l’altro. In questo modo siamo riusciti a trovare una linea comune attraverso la pila di idee che avevamo raccolto. Per noi era importante che ci fosse una certa connessione tra i brani, un elemento comune in ogni canzone. “High Performer” è sicuramente più “prodotto”, più “pensato” rispetto al nostro album di debutto, credo. Abbiamo davvero diretto il tutto con attenzione e ci siamo impegnati molto nel quadro generale, senza mai perdere l’attenzione su molti dettagli, ovviamente.
Una curiosità, chi ha avuto l’idea della copertina dell’album (un cane biondo) e qual è il suo significato?
Mira, la nostra cantante, ha lavorato a stretto contatto con il nostro amico e illustratore di grande fiducia Schorsch Feierfeil. Hanno fatto un brainstorming sul nostro pianeta ossessionato dall’efficienza e dalla produttività e si sono inventati rapidamente l’immagine del levriero afgano. Un cane, che era / è uno status symbol e un animale domestico estremamente elegante che le persone benestanti vorrebbero mostrare in giro, non solo nelle strade, ma nei concorsi canini, per dimostrare la loro ricchezza e la loro superiorità. Volevamo trovare una mascotte in grado di mostrare la vanità dell’umanità, l’impulso di dimostrare abilità e potere attraverso alte prestazioni. L’ “High Performer” di cui parliamo è una persona che non ha ancora riflettuto sulla reale necessità di ottenere qualcosa.
Le vostre influenze sono infinite, nel vostro album possiamo sentire: jazz, prog, musica da film, elettropop ecc. Da quali artisti avete preso ispirazione nella vostra carriera?
Son Lux, FKA Twigs, Björk, Missy Elliot, Miles Davis, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill Frisell, D’Angelo, Radiohead, Bon Iver, Elvin Jones, Aphex Twin, Radiohead, J Dilla, Blake Mills, compositori di musica barocca e classica come Gustav Mahler and Igor Strawinsky.
Venite dal paese di Mozart, Opus, Falco, Conchita Wurst, l’Austria si è dimostrata un posto molto eclettico e prolifico nel corso degli anni in termini di musica. Com’è la scena musicale attuale nela vostra Nazione?
Sbocciano ottime persone davvero dappertutto! Siamo davvero felici di lavorare in mezzo ad artisti così ispirati. Questo influisce molto anche sul nostro approccio. Sento che stiamo imparando tonnellate di cose l’uno dall’altro. Ciò che è particolarmente bello da vedere è che sembra esserci una minore distanza tra musicisti con molti studi alle spalle e quelli provenienti dalla scena autodidatta. C’è un sacco di rispetto reciproco.
Un’altra cosa curiosa è che anche se suonate molta musica elettronica non usate computer sul palco ma solo strumenti veri. Nel 2019 vediamo djs che suonano di fronte a migliaia di persone utilizzando solamente una consolle mentre molte band sottovalutate suonano fisicamente di fronte a poche persone. La maggior parte delle persone scarica musica, cosa ne pensi, torneremo al tempo in cui le persone adoravano leggere un libretto con foto e testi come faccio ancora io o non c’è via di ritorno?
Questa è una delle grandi domande, no? Credo (e ne sono testimone!) che ci sia una generazione in aumento formata non solo da assidui ascoltatori di tutti i tipi di musica, ma che riscopre anche la musica senza elementi visivi (mentre questa è già una straordinaria forma d’arte da sola!). Vedo un intero movimento di consumatori e ascoltatori molto attenti che arrivano o sono già lì. Forse l’hardware cambierà, forse rimarrà digitale, ma la necessità e la sete di nuova musica e le storie dietro di essa esistono eccome! Anche perché oggi quasi tutti sono musicisti, il che è una cosa bellissima. Mentre altri potrebbero pensare che ci siano troppe band là fuori, credo fermamente che il mondo possa essere un posto migliore se ogni singolo essere umano riesce a trovare sé stesso in una qualche forma d’arte. In questo modo possono comprendere e avvicinarsi a lavori come i nostri ancora meglio.
Cosa vi aspettate dopo l’uscita di questo album? Farete un tour di supporto?
Intendi supportare qualche altra band? Certo, portateci con voi! Ma solo dopo aver completato il nostro tour ad ottobre, ovviamente 🙂

Hi guys, welcome to the pages of Tuttorock, first of all congratulations for your new album, High Performer, which will be released on September, I’m reviewing it, I’m listening to it for the fifth time and I’m finding it really, really beautiful. How was this LP born?
Hi ! How flattering 🙂 To be completely honest with you it wasn’t an easy birth, as they say. At first we assigned ourselves months of studio time together. That was right after and during touring. We were a bit drained, but still tried to compose collaboratively and simultaneously. Eventually we allowed ourselves to work separately and kind of pass on sound and song sketches from one to another. This way we were able to find a visionary line through the pile of ideas we had collected. It was important to us that there is a certain connection between the pieces, a common element in each song. “High Performer” is definitely more “produced”, more “thought-out” than our debut album, I think. We really directed all outcome carefully and put a lot of effort into the bigger picture, while never losing focus on the many details, of course.
A curiosity, who had the idea of the album cover with a blond dog and what is its meaning?
Mira, our singer worked closely together with our deeply trusted friend and illustrator Schorsch Feierfeil. They brainstormed about this planet’s obsession with efficiency and productivity and quickly came up with the image of the afghan greyhound. A dog, that was/is a status symbol and an extremly elegant pet that wealthy people would show around, not only on the streets but in pageants to prove their wealth and superiority. We wanted to find a mascot that could display the vanity of mankind, the apparent urge to prove ability and power through high performance. The high performer in our story is a person that has not yet reflected upon his need to achieve something.
Your influences are endless, in your album I listen to jazz, prog, film music, electropop etc. Which artists have inspired you in your careers?

You come from the country of Mozart, Opus, Falco, Conchita Wurst, Austria has shown itself to be a very eclectic and prolific place over the years in terms of music. How is the current musical scene there?
It is really blooming with confident people all over! We are really happy to work among such inspired artists. That also touches our approach. I feel like we are learning tons from another. What is especially nice to see is that there seems to be less division between academically trained musicians and the self-taught DIY scene. There is tons of respect for one another.
Another curious thing is that even if you play a lot of electronic music you don’t use laptops on stage but only true instruments. In 2019 we see the djs that play in front of thousands people without instruments while most undervalued bands play in front of few people. Most people download music, what do you think, we’ll go back to the time when people loved to read a booklet with photos and lyrics like I still do or there’s no way back?
That’s one of the big questions, isn’t it? I do believe (and witness!) that there is a generation on the rise that is not only a strong listener of all kinds of music, but also re-discovering music without visuals (while this is an awesome art form on its own!). I feel like there is a whole movement of very attentive consumers and listeners coming / already there. Maybe the hardware will change, maybe it will stay digital, but the need and the thirst for new music and the stories behind it exists very much! also because almost everybody is a musician today, which is a beautiful thing. While others may think that there are too many bands out there, i strongly believe that the world is a better place if every single human being can find her or himself somewhere in the arts. This way they can understand and approach albums and works like ours even better.
What do you expect after the release of this album? Will you do a support tour?
You mean support another band? Sure, take us with you! But only after completing our own tour in October, of course 🙂
