ROCK STORIES – Dream Theater e il missaggio ‘a nudo’ di “Pull Me U …
I Dream Theater pubblicarono il singolo Pull me under il 29 agosto 1992 come primo estratto dal secondo album in studio Images and Words. Originariamente intitolata Oliver’s Twist, in omaggio a Derek Oliver, è la traccia d’apertura dell’album. Il testo, composto dall’allora tastierista Kevin Moore, è ispirato all’Amleto di William Shakespeare, il cui tema principale è la morte. Proprio per simulare l’arrivo inaspettato di quest’ultima, il brano viene troncato sul finire dopo 8 minuti e 11 secondi, ispirandosi alla traccia dei Beatles ” I Want You (She’s So Heavy) ” dal loro album di Abbey Road. Derek Shulman, della Atco Records, comprese subito le potenzialità del pezzo, e infatti, malgrado il tema macabro fu un grande successo radiofonico e MTV lo passò ripetutamente nella propria programmazione.
Se la storia della canzone è più o meno ben conosciuta, forse la parte relativa al missaggio è quella più curiosa e rivelata dalla band solo successivamente. Kevin Moore e Mike Portnoy ebbero un rapporto difficile e pieno di contrasti con il produttore David Prater, personaggio decisamente fuori dalle righe, Prater pretese di missare Pull me under completamente nudo e nel buio più totale. Quando in un’intervista Portnoy raccontò la storia, aggiunse “Avere a che fare con quello stronzo fu una bella rottura”.
